griego. >> i'm anne makovec in for kenny choi. it is just about 4:30. yeah, big morning. we have lots of news. still some uncertainty in the air, some races too close to call so we are going to talk about about throughout the morning. but first our wednesday weather. >> let's check in on that. we have some clouds out there this morning. visibility may affected in some areas today and it will be cooler. we have a lowering of our temperatures. today will be the coolest cloudiest day of the week. a problem northbound 101. we have all lanes closed at dry creek road. so all traffic diverted off and you will be able to get

back on at the next exit. we are seeing major delays with speeds down to 10 miles per hour so give yourself some extra time. i'll have more on that coming up in the next traffic report. a twist in the race for mayor of san francisco. former state senator mark leno was trailing until elections officials redistributed the second place votes under the ranked choice system. and that did push him ahead of city supervisor london breed. here's how it breaks down: han 25- thousand second- place votes from san franciscans who had jane kim number one on their ballots... if he wins, leno ul san 's first openly g he received more than 25,000 second place votes from san franciscans who had jane kim as number one. so if he wins, leno would become san francisco's first gay mayor. he said last night that this would be his last run for

public office win or lose. >> when i arrived here as a gay jewish boy looking for a safe place to land on planet earth, san francisco welcomed me as i know it has welcomed so many of you. >> yes! >> and so this is our home. and we want to keep it our home. we want to keep the character and quality of this neighborhood and so many of our neighborhoods that we want to keep this a place for working people to afford to live. >> london breed's campaign rally felt like a celebration. friends, family and many of the neighborhood activists she worked with for years flocked to her side to congratulate her for a campaign well done. breed thanked supporters for hard work over the last few months. >> this campaign is a winning

campaign because we have brought so many people together . we have brought people together from all walks of life from all parts of san francisco. so no matter what happens we are winners and we are going to stay together and tackle the challenges that we know we need to do to get san francisco on the right path for everybody. [ screaming ] >> as you point out, there was some divisiveness among the candidates at some point. how do you feel like it needs to be resolved, that divisiveness? >> so at this time, the campaign is over. the votes have been counted and it's time for etndi'st here doing the work in my leadership capacity so i'm planning to continue to work. i want the board of supervisors, the mayor, to all work together to solve these challenges. >> now, if she does end up winning, london breed would

make history as san francisco's first black woman elected as mayor. supervisor jane kim took third place behind breed and leno. her campaign says voter turnout and a lack of young voters in particular may have had an impact on this race. voting in the primary for governor, gavin newsom is moving on along with republican john cox. kpix 5's emily turner has reaction from newsom's campaign headquarters in san francisco. >> very much a celebratory atmosphere here in san francisco where gavin newsom supporters gathered to celebrate his victory, although he won't go so far as to say victory quite yet. in fact, he took the stage at 10:00 introduced by his wife and said, this is not a victory speech. in fact, this is just halftime. but we're looking good so far. but we have to get back to work. he said we have to get back to work right now because time has never been more critical, specifically referring to the trump administration which he

went on to talk about in his speech. >> a state where we don't criminalize diversity. we celebrate deering ] >> a state where we don't obstruct justice, we demand justice for everybody. message for a opponent. >> mr. newsom wanted to run against me instead of a democrat. i said, be careful, mr. newsom, what you wish for. [ cheering ] >> thousands of registered voters in l.a. county were not able to vote though when they showed up at their polling places. the registrar says that something happened with the sign-in books. they print for each polling place. a total of 118,000 names weren't included. those voters were offered provisional ballots instead. gubernatorial candidate and mayor antonio villaraigosa is calling on the registrar to extend polling hours through friday. >> in the course of the next day or two until we figure this out, we won't cast aspersions but we will demand answers. >> among tho , the fonz. actor henry winkler tweeted he was one of the voters left off the rolls. it looks like crossing bay

area bridges will get more expensive. nearly two-thirds of voters said yes to regional measure 3. it would raise tolls on state-owned bridges by $3 by 2025. it only needed a simple majority to pass. santa clara county voters have decided to remove aaron persky from the bench. this stems from his controversial sentence in the sexual assault case almost 60% of voters were in favor of his removal. the recall campaign started after he sentenced former stanford swimmer brock turner in 2016. critics say the six-month jail sentence was too lenient. persky will be replaced by cindy hendrickson. opponents are disaoint reporter: judge aaron rg persky was said to be saddened but not disrespondent about the lopsided results that will remove hit from the superior court bench. >> he put up a good fight. he is going to move on and do

whatever he needs to do to continue to take care of his family. >> reporter: judge persky is the first judge to be recalled in california in 86 years a decision sending shock waves through the california legal community. >> if a good judge has lost his job for doing his job, think it's a very sad day for the judiciary in california. >> reporter: persky is a lawyer and could seek employment in private practice or as a prosecutor in the district attorney's office. in palo alto, len ramirez, kpix 5. we will have continuing coverage of the elections on air and online at so many exciting things happening in the last 24 hours. >> yes. >> my daughter voted for the first time yesterday. >> awww. >> that was kind of fun. >> that's very exciting. it's good that we have cooler air tobey ople feel about the election, you can step outside and cool down.

so we are going to experience a cooler day. the coolest day of your week. we also have a little bit of visibility issues. here's a look toward the golden gate bridge. a little hazy and cloudy. here's the satellite/radar. you can see more cloud coverage especially compared to yesterday and more through santa rosa, fairfield and concord, as well. and so yeah, that will be kind of the issue this morning as you hit the roads. half moon bay visibility down to 7. some flights might be impacted. wind speeds are west at sfo at 13 through downtown at 15 and that's contributing to our cooler air. so this weather pattern is in full effect today in fairfield 25-mile-per-hour winds. we'll check in now on the roads. and we are just getting some up to date information on

an accident thhappenr t.nes rrently shdo northbound 101 through healdsburg. dry creek road all traffic diverted off at that exit. then the dry creek on-ramp is closed to northbound 101 at this time, as well. you can take the frontage street and then get back onto northbound 101 at linton springs but do keep in mind that this is going to add a couple of extra minutes on your trip. this could impact your ride depending how long it's out there. we aren't seeing too many slowdowns in the southbound direction but just a few brake lights as folks make their way past the scene of the earlier accident. we'll let you know when all lanes re-open. over at the bay bridge toll plaza, a little bit of a backup in the cash trash. another patient has been found dead at sf general

hospital. kpix 5's betty yu has the latest on this new investigation. >> reporter: the san francisco police department is investigating the death of a patient at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. it appears the onan involuntary 72-hour hold in the psychiatric ward according to the "chronicle." the medical examiner hasn't released information on how she died yet. this case follows the death of 75-year-old ruby lee anderson lashfod in the stairwell of the power plant building on the hospital grounds. the family reported that anderson had dementia and missing for days from a mental health facility on the property. the hospital says it's unclear how she got inside the power plant, which is supposed to be a secure building. back in 2013, lynne spalding, a patient, went missing from the main hospital. her body was found about two

as for the issues. >> the race for alameda county district attorney was a hotly contested one with incumbent nc winning. goodrich was there at o'malley's campaign headquarters. >> reporter: we're here at 29 restaurant in alameda and this is district attorney nancy o'malley's campaign election party. all of her supporters directly behind me hoping for a big win. >> thank you, thank you, thank you. >> whoo! >> reporter: this is the first time in nearly a decade the d.a. is running against an opponent. she was appointed alameda county d.a. in 2009 and ran unopposed in 2010 and also 2014. she has been endorsed by governor brown and senator harris and both oakland and berkeley mayors. when i talked to her going into the election, she said, you bet, i'm nervous. >> i think the campaign has been interesting with the outside money changing the game quite a bit.

but, you know, we had a strong, strong grassroots effort, you know, people in the community that have been so supportive, not just in raising for me money but also people being encouraging and introducing me to other people and the community really coming together to make sure that i stayed in this position. >> voters in san francisco have approved proposition e, which will ban the sale of flavored tobacco products including menthol cigarettes and flavored "vaping" liquids. r.j. reynolds put almost $12 million to fight it but it passed with about 68% of the vote. if president trump plans to invite nba champs to the white house, they should think again. the president had disinvited the eagles after learning only around 10 members of the super bowl winning team plan to

attend. if mr. trump plans to invite the future nba champs, they refuse to go. >> i know no matter who wins this series, no one wants the invite anyway, so. >> i agree with 'bron. pretty sure, um, the way we handled things last year, kind of stay consistent with that. >> many of the eagles players are expected to address the matter today. a professional swimmer is hoping to go the distance to be the first to swim across the pacific to the bay area. he started his 5,000 mile journey from japan to san francisco yesterday. 51-year-old ben lecomte set off from the coast near tokyo early in the morning. the french-american athlete plans to swim 8 hours a day with a team behind him. >> what's much more difficult is to be in the very hostile environment to do that da in and days out.

>> lecomte will be battling storms, jellyfish swarms and sharks. he says he is trying to raise awareness about the threat of pollution in our oceans. that journey will take between six to eight months. he finished a similar swim across the atlantic in 1998. the sharks. >> the sharks! >> when he did the swim in '98, he said a sharked followed him for five days. he -- he said a shark follows him for five days. he swims for eight hours a day. he said he would never do it again but he is going back out. >> he is 20 years older too. >> wiser? >> if a shark follows you -- >> you go to sleep and then you get back in the water with the shark. five times. >> he is in shark territory but he wants to call attention to pollution in the oceans. >> he will be in san francisco

six to eight months so he has to get through the winter first. here's our weather today. here's the bay bridge. you can see off in the distance clouds over parts of the east bay. so we are noticing a bit of cloud coverage but also some clear skies right over the bay. we have west winds. san jose with cloud coverage. 54 degrees in santa rosa. 52 in san francisco. pretty normal conditions for this early-morning hour. 53 concord. 55 degrees. this is what you will be seeing just a few clouds once we get that daylight mix of some sunshine over the south bay but the east bay covered in the north bay not too bad. here's the futurecast. by 9 a.m. you may see drizzle. through 9 a.m., 10 a.m., most bay area locations south of the golden gate bridge it

could stick around so you may still be dealing with gray skies throughout a lot of the day today. we are in full effect with west wind pushing in the marine layer. feeling the breeze at 25, later tonight 7:00, 8:00, it will pick up for the coast and san francisco. 25-mile-per-hour gusts through midnight. we have a high to the south and low to the north. as they merge together you see those west winds coming through. oltoday below average for san francisco again. then oakland looking at about 6 degrees below average. concord 10 degrees below average as we hit only the low 70s for those inland areas. tomorrow slight warmup and then friday good. the weekend is going to be just right. all right. right now, heads up to drivers

who are heading along northbound 101 through the north bay. this is a full freeway closure in effect due to an earlier accident. it looks like clean-up crews are there. they had to absorb some fluid that was on the road from the crash. so all lanes closed northbound at dry creek road. the exit, the on-ramp, is closed, as well. they may re-open around 4:45 so they are probably in the clean-up stages now. hopefully it will be open shortly. we'll update you. weave a backup approaching the scene. that southbound side not seeing any delays at this point. here's a live look at your ride along the golden gate bridge. nice and easy-going in both directions. shouldn't have any trouble making your way along that stretch. eastshore freeway still in the green. this is 80 at mcbryde. your ride heading towards the bay bridge toll plaza starts

good morning. temperatures 10 degrees below average especially inland at concord. 67 in sunnyvale and mountain view. east bay low to mid-70s. at the bay low 60s. the beaches around the upper 50s. right now we're definitely seeing a backup develop over at the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights yet. use mass transit. it's all on time. a nasty crash involving a smart train is caught on camera. this newly released video shows the box truck ripped into pieces. yikes! officials say the truck driver ran right through the crossing arms and you can see the impact right there directly int

last thursday near santa rosa at the todd road intersection. the driver escaped with non- life-threatening injuries. nobody on the train was hurt. investigators are looking into a fire and explosion at a pallet company near sonoma that started yesterday afternoon at a company called sonoma pacific on fremont flowed schellville. hundreds of people were briefly evacuated within a half mile radius. nearly 100 firefighters were on scene. the fire and explosion led to power outages and road closures in the area. the massive explosion sent a large propane tank flying. >> we saved 58 vehicles in a neighboring park. we had $600,000 in damage to the factory. however, once power was restored, the factory will be in complete operation. >> the company was also the

side, 880 in oakland where traffic is moving smoothly. of course, we have all of your latest election results from the big primaries yesterday coming up. >> mm-hm. >> it was a big night. >> it was a big night, yeah. i was trying to keep track and then this morning things changed. >> yeah. the race for san francisco mayor still too close to call so we have lots coming up. but first, let's talk it's goi definitely want to keep layers handy perhaps just to stay snug. here's a look at "salesforce tower" at the south and clearing over the bay and cloud coverage. you will see both today. a lot of this is the marine layer that we have been getting. it is thicker. you may see drizzle. here's a look at the futurecast through the next couple of hours. there's a good chance if you are south of the golden gate bridge you will see cloud coverage and you may have to use your windshield wipers. by 2:00, most of you will be under sunshine
