based uber filing the paperwork for its ipo and the company reportedly hoping to raise $10 million. the news is raising some questions about the business model. the company reported 42% revenue growth in 2018 but has never turned a profit and has lost $8 billion since it was founded. thousands of economy and union workers gathered to march to union headquarters. they are demanding better wages as san francisco becomes more flush with tech wealth. >> it will take the mayor taking us seriously to reach out to us and find out what our needs are and help us and see we are a valued part of this community. >> many fear a wave of tech ipos like uber could make the problems worse. looking into income, a quality

a call from a terrified daughter led to a police shooting in richmond. she told dispatchers her father was attacking family members with a knife. police say he broke in through a window and officers confronted the 55-year-old in the backyard opening fire as he continued to attack a young boy. >> the juvenile female was able to make that call to the police department to get the police out there in a timely fashion. they absolutely protected that family from any harm. >> a woman and a boy had cuts on their stomach and face and are expected to be okay. some good news to report, a 4-year-old boy who found a gun and shot himself is off life support. family of this young boy told us he was out of icu and moving his arms and legs. the 4-year-old was playing when he found the gun and accidentally shot himself. it happened last month at a home in oakland. police arrested a 37-year-old for storage of a firearm.

if you own a alexa system you may want to keep your voice down. we explained why. >> alexa? are you listening to us? >> i only listen after you say the week word. >> it turns out she might not be the only one listening. >> reporter: a report says amazon workers and contractors do listen to voice recordings captured by the companies smart speakers. some of what they hear is not just you talking to alexa. >> with alexa, what we have is amazon workers who are hearing snippets of conversations and a number of concerns came up in the report. one of which was some of these recordings happen not when we say hey alexa or whatever your week word is.

amazon claims the goal is to improve the ai software. >> what did the basketball say to the therapist? >> reporter: in a statement amazon said we take the security of privacy of our customers personal information seriously. we only annotate an extremely small sample of alexa voice recordings in order to improve our customers experience. >> the main concern is that consumers are not aware this is happening. in albany, kpix 5. bale betyll the owner said she plans to countersued the city.

she has been locked in eight dispute over the dinosaur sculptures she added to her backyard. the city says she never got the proper permits and ignored orders to stop the work. her attorney believes it is a case of racial discrimination. >> i believe she is treated differently, especially in my mind. i don't think any prior owner of the flintstone house had any issues we can compare to this. >> it is nonsense and it is offensive nonsense. everybody at townhall has treated her with the utmost respect and completely fairly. >> the city says she has a pending permit application. officials hope to resolve the disagreement through permitting process. coming up next, kpix 5 original reports, finding solution through family to address bay area honess west housing. retailers teaming up on a unique new outreach program.

one of san francisco's biggest tourist destinations tackling the homeless crisis by turning to a new tactic. the local nonprofit reading -- teaming up with a nonprofit group to make change. >> reporter: union square is known for bright lights and busy storefronts. unfortunately, also a big homeless population. now, it is an opportunity for personal connections to be made that could change lives. the people in san francisco's union square, most of us walk by or avoid the people they want to talk to it is called miracle messages and they have

teamed up with the union square union district to tackle the homeless population. >> we are trying to conduct business and we want to make sure it is clean and safe and people feel safe. at the same time we want to help people on the street. >> reporter: the executive director says they have tried everything to find a solution, including social services but they were unsuccessful. that is when the group turned to kevin. >> the city is doing the best they can. what we have found is there is a role we can play as concerned, friendly, humane, people from san francisco that can be part of the solution and not gripe about the problem. >> reporter: a team of 2 formerly homeless volunteers that patrol union square weekly. they offer to reconnect those people with their loved ones. sub -- something that simple can turn a person's life around. wayne is a union square success

story. >> through the help of his family he got into stable housing and he is off of the streets for the first time. >> reporter: since october last year they have had 91 interactions and recorded a dozen messages to family. 8 of those have been successfully delivered and half resulting in a reunion. the number may not seem staggering but for union square they say any progress is a win. >> there are many angels on the street. all of a sudden, someone comes along who has been formally in this place to make that connection and they trust them. in that way it has worked. >> reporter: there will be a miracle messages at that anybody can download letting us be a part of that connection process. in san francisco, kpix 5 . another gorgeous day around the bay. i love the sunsets. here is a live picture. keep it up. >> okay. thank you. >> let me push the magic map.
