what the crane investigators still don't know about this deadly accident. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. this is "cbs morning news." i'm anne-marie green. a woman was killed and three others were wounded after a gunman opened fire at a synagogue in poway near san diego. the shooter, 19-year-old john t. earnest, is being held without bond. he was arrested and face a hate crime charge in addition to murder and attempted murder charges. laura podesta is live this morning. >> sheriffs and police have now steppe the victims of saturday's deadly synagogue shooting. >> we love you. we will stand with you now and forever. >> one person was killed and three injured when a gunman opened fire in the middle of sabbath service.

8-year-old noya dahan was hit with shrapnel during the attack. >> she's with us. this is bravery. >> her uncle, 34-year-old almog peretz was hit in the leg. 6-year-old lori gilbert-kaye was killed. >> lori took the bullet for all of us. >> rabbi yisroel goldstein was shot in the hand and lost an index finger. >> it's a reminder how strong we are and how heroic we can be. >> this is what he told his congregation. >> we with will not let anyone or anything take us down. terrorism like this will not take us down. >> san diego sheriff bill gore identified the shooter. >> john earnest, date of birth,

6/9/99, age 19. >> his semiautomatic rifle may have malfunctioned after several rounds. an off-duty border patrol officer fired at the shooter as he fled. earnest later called 911 and surrendered in his car. and earnest will be in court on wednesday. we're hearing he may face a hate crime charge in addition to homicide charges. anne-marie. >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. two more bodies have been found inside a tennessee home raising the death toll to seven. investigators continue to search two homes in westmoreland where the murders took place. the suspected killer michael cummings was shot and killed saturday night after an hours-long manhunt. people living in the community were shocked to hear about what happened. >> you think out here you're safe. you feel a security, sense of security, and then whenever something like this happens that major and that many people, it's

like -- it just scares you. >> it's unheard of. >> police say a 12-year-old girl is among the dead, a&of the victims were close relatives of the suspect. the victims' names have not been released though. >> and investigators in sale are trying to figure out what caused a construction crane to fall on one of the city's busiest streets. the crane collapsed at google's new facilities. four people were killed and four others were hurt. mola lenghi reports. >> reporter: a disaster zone in downtown seattle after a crane collapsed in the south lake union neighborhood late saturday. two of the victims were crane operators. two others including sara wong, a freshman at seattle pacific university, were in vehicles that were crushed. >> shebang. down she comes. i knew what it was. i ran out the door. >> reporter: he ran outside with a badly damaged vehicle with a mother and baby inside somehow unharmed. >> very, very lucky baby. very lucky. not a mark on her.

good to see. >> reporter: this cellphone video recorded just a few minutes before the crane toppled shows the tower beginning to lean. james etherin saw e whole thin d t stted toean. when in' stop its lean it. was going the whole time, but before i actually registered it was falling. >> reporter: it happens from weather, maintenance, to operator error, but by and large, crane use is safe. >> with big cranes like this and the locations and everything and doing the work, they're not that common to have this dramatic type of crane accident. smaller accidents are fairly common. >> pritchard says cranes are currently in high demand in u.s. cities. according to "the seattle times," seattle has more cranes in use than any other city. we're enny durkin.

going to pay extra attention that the cranes in seattle are safe. >> reporter: mola lenghi, cbs news, new york. police in maryland say a gunman opened fire into a crowd killing a man and wounded seven others. yesterday's shooting took place on a street in baltimore where people were gathered for cookouts. police say the shooting appeared extremely targeted, but a possible motive was not given. no suspect was named. the incident comes after baltimore's new commissioner was sworn in. and the house judiciary committee plans to threaten attorney general william barr if he refuses to testify this week. he's supposed to report on wednesday. he may skip the hearing. on "face the nation" sunday lindsey graham defined the report. >> it's over for me. he didn't collude and

obstruction of justice is absurd. >> the report found no members of the trump campaign conspired with russians to influence the 2016 presidential campaign, but it did not draw a conclusion on obstruction of justice. joe biden is holding a campaign in the battleground state of pennsylvania today. the former vice president launched his 2020 presidential campaign last week. biden joins a field of more than 20 democrats running. recent polling had him as the leader among them even before a formal announcement. and the movie "avengers: endgame" assembled, shattering arly every record in its opening weekend. >> we've got to finish this. >> it took in $1.2 billion worldwide in just five days. to accommodate demand,

"the new york times" says spain's ruling socialist party strengthened its hold on

parliament in national elections. ♪ >> supporters of prime minister pedro sanchez and his socialist party celebrated in madrid last night. the party captured 123 of the 350 parliament seats but fell short of an absolute majority. it will need to form a coalition government. for the first time since the 1970s, a far right party captured seats. they captured 10% of the vote and will have 24 seats. and our partners at the bbc report more than 270 workers in indonesia have died counting votes. officials say they died mostly of fatigue-related illnesses caused by long hours counting millions of paper ballots by hand in the national and regional elections. more than 1,800 workers have fallen ill. about 7 million people are helping count the votes from

a memorial will be held today for a woman killed in the synagogue shooting in california. three others were wounded saturday after a gunman opened fire at a synagogue in poway near san diego. the accused shooter, 19-year-old john t. earnest is being held without bail and is expected to be arraigned later on this week. in health news, as the elderly population continues to grow, so will the need for more caregivers. kenneth craig tells us about a revolutionary home care program. >> see, that was your birthday party. >> reporter: this woman is 93 years old and suffers from dementia. her son's fiancee peggy recently became her full-time caregiver. it's part of a promise he made to his father. >> he asked me to look after my mom, and several weeks later he died. >> wow. >> so i took that promise pretty seriously. >> reporter: peggy assists her with everything from her

medication and meals to simply getting around. the arrangement is called self-directed care, which allows the sick or elderly to hire their own friends or family to take care of them and the love loved ones get paid for it, but patients don't have to pay out of their own pockets. the funds get paid by medicare. >> reporter: her case is manage and coordinated by a company called freedom care which overseas thousands of new york patients. >> this is really the future of home health care. >> reporter: this ceo believes the motto could make a big dent in the growing shortage of caregivers by baby workers while also improving outcomes for patients. >> nobody's going to care for family like family. we've seen hospitalizations drop considerably.
