>> report of a possible robberies. officers arrived and were advised by a store clerk as well as a manager an individual did walk into the store this morning prior to the store opening. he was wearing a ski mask, and he asked to speak to the store manager. an individual who walks into any store wearing a ski mask always raises a concern. and especially when that individual asks to speak to the manager. that's not typical and is cause for alarm. is that going to be a possible robbery? the individual did ask to speak to the manager, the employees did leave the store immediately. the manager left the store as well. at this time the oakland police department set up a perimeter around the store. we have no employees left inside the store. we are looking for an african-
american male, medium complexion, about 5'6" to 5'8", 140 pounds, wearing a black ski mask. he has a very dark blue or black zip-up hooded jacket, dark jeans, carrying a backpack. right now it's unknown if he's still inside this store. we have activated a s.w.a.t. callout, and until the store can be searched we will keep the store on lockdown and to make sure that he's not inside this store. >> the next point, at some point, s.w.a.t. team members will go inside the store but right now no one is inside the store? >> that's correct. no one is in the store. we'll wait until our s.w.a.t. team arrives. they can conduct a search to make sure the suspect is still not inside. we want to make sure before any employees return to work before we would allow any patrons to come into the store.
we want to make sure it's safe for everyone. >> when this went down was he armed with a gun or did they assume he was armed with a gun? >> the employees did not see a gun at that time. we're going to treat this as possibly armed, so we're going to treat this carefully and go about it cautiously. again, it's not typical for anyone to walk into a store, a place of business, wearing a ski mask. we have to assume the worst. we have to assume this individual was there maybe to do some type of criminal activity, and so we're going to treat it with the utmost caution. it's unknown if she's still in there. we want to make sure before we allow any employees or patrons to go to the store, we want to make sure it's safe for everyone. >> one of the employees said he may have stayed the night inside that store. is that a possibility, do we know? >> from the information that we received from the employees who
were there this morning, that doesn't sound like that would be an avenue that we would be looking at. information we're receiving is the store was open this morning to allow employee access only, and it sounds like this individual came in through the same doors that the employees came in, and that's when he requested to speak to the manager wearing the ski mask. that's always something we have to definitely be very cautious, and we're taking precautions right now. >> did he make any threats and how did the employees get out safely? >> the employees went out the doors that they entered in, which would be the entrance and exit doors. once they saw an individual in the store, wearing a ski mask, and asking to speak to the manager, they did a great job. they realized, hey, this is not normal. people don't usually do this. usually intention associated wit is criminal activity.
>> he let them out without opposition? >> correct. >> she's still going on. let me show you the lay of the land. she's repeating the information now. we'll walk back and show you what police officers are doing now. it looks like they are huddled in the corner, they are talking to them, mark, talking to the person inside, if we assume he's still inside. we've heard them using the bullhorns, come out with your hands up. but over the past maybe 20 minutes we haven't heard any speaking by the police officers, you can see them huddled in the corner. as far as this parking lot, the perimeter has grown bigger and buyinger by -- bigger by the minute. lots of people are leaving because they have been told by police officers it's not safe or they themselves don't think it's safe. as far as allowing people in here, look at this. that car has been parked there for probably the past i would say 35, 45 minutes or so, not
allowing anybody in. and right in front that street is pleasant valley. you can see the traffic backed up because so many people are driving by, wondering what's going on. just a recap, this is not a hostage situation. it seems like the person who came in, the guy with the ski mask, did allow the employees to leave safely. he didn't make threats. he just asked one of the employees, i need to speak to the store manager. we just learned from the public information officer in fact probably he did not stay overnight, highly unlikely, that the employees -- he walked through the same door as the employees which i'm sure cvs is not happy about because according to the manager i spoke to at 6:40 in the morning, that place should be airtight, only employees should be in, and the doors should have been locked. keep it their on kron 4. if they do anything we'll let you know.
