alameda countys district attorney on who they believe is to blame for all of those lives lost back in december when the ghost ship warehouse erupted in flames killing 36 people, and injuring dozens. nancy o'malley, alameda co. district attorney. "derick almena and max harris. knowing created a fire threat, the inadequately prevented an escape, filled the area with human beings and now they are facing consequences of actions." o'malley says a special team examined six thousand reports, served 12 search warrants, interviewed 75 witnesses and reviewed 300 pieces of evidence. she says over the span of several years, the two - derick almena shown here - who leased the warehouse and max harris who was the creative director in charge of the space allowed the warehouse to be illegally transformed. 29:25 o'malley.

today in lake county harris in la, they will eventually be brought here in to alameda for an arraginment, both are facing 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. in a statement released - almena's attorney says their investigation has revealed that almenda did not commit any criminal neglgience and that he is a held out as a scapegoat (vicki) it's been just over six months since that deadly warehouse fire took the lives of 36 people. many of the victims were young adults just starting out. kron4's maureen kelly got reaction to the criminal charges from the mother of one of the victims who died, who is speaking publicly for the first time since the loss
of her son. .it brought everything again....memories came flooding inmary vega didn't want her face to appear on camera...for fear of becoming too emotional.she's the mother of 22 year old alex vega who you see on the right in this photo.on the left is alex's longtime girlfriend, 20 year old michaela gregory. who also died in the ghostship warehouse fire.mary says she got a call from the d-a's office this morning, letting them know about the arrest of derrick almena and max harris. after she got off the phone she went to the cemetary i just wanted to be with my son six months after the deadly blaze, she says she was hit with many emotions about criminal charges being filed today.banger sadness...i dont' want to be angry it's not going to bring him back. i think what it mostly is sadness.i want to see justice done.i want someone to say i'm sorryit's not going to happen but i want someone to say i'm sorry mrs vega that you lost your son.mary vega has not been visit the the warehouse where her son and his girlfriend lost their lives....nor has she visited the memorials in oakland
honoring the victims. saying it's just too much for her right now. but she says if there is a trial, she wants to be in the courtroom to see for herself....someone being held accountable for the deaths of alex,michaela and so many others.maureen kelly kron4 news. (rob live) after deliberating for about 16 hours over the course of several days, the jury rejected the prosecutions argument that antolin garcia torres deserves the death penalty. instead, in a unanimous decision, they sent the killer of sierra lamar to prison for life without the possibility of parole. jeff rosen/district attorney "today the jury decided the fate of a child murderer.... outside the courthouse after antolin garcia torres had just avoided the death penalty, district attorney jeff rosen telling reporters that the less said about garcia torres the betterjeff rosen" the jury made it so he will die in prison and never take another breath as a free man..."garcia torres had no obvious reaction to the verdict. the decision was unanimous. the jury rejected the prosecutions call to show him no mercy because he showed none to sierra lamar. in closing arguments,
the defense had urged the jury to spare garcia torres,' life. that justice doesn't have to be an eye for an eye.brian matthews/defense attorney "we're thankful for the jury's verdict, we're still going to fight for him, we're very thankful..."there were some murmurs of disappointment in the courtroom but none of the raw emotion that occurred when he was found guilty last month. legal analyst steven clark suggests that the fact that sierra lamar has never been been found may have stayed the jury's hand. sheriff laurie smith weighed in on that as well.laurie smith/sheriffif garcia torres has once ounce of humanity in that cold murderer's heat of his, i call on him now to tell us where she is so we can bring her home...."

when she did not show up for school. she was last seen walking to the bus stop in morgan hill. two months later... antolin garcia-torres was arrested following weeks of rveillance by investigators. it would take more than four years before the case would go to trial... with jury selection beginning in october of last year. then nearly a month ago... more than five years after she disappeared... a jury convicted garcia-torres of her murder. now he will spend the rest of his life in prison. had engine problems on the right-hand shoulder of westbound highway 24 near the wilder road on-ramp. the flames then spread to the nearby grass and hillside. the response to the fire has shut down the three right westbound lanes of highway 24. there is no estimate for when the lanes will reopen. criminal charges today....against two men connected tooakland's ghost ship warehouse fire... catherine heenan is here with the latest on the charges againsttwo proprietors of the warehouse... (catherine) the alameda county district attorney has filed 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter against the two men.... it's happening despite the fact that prosecutors say a huge amount of evidencewent up in flames in the december tragedy... 36 people who had come for a party and concert were killed... the charges have been filed against derick almena....with prosecutors sayinghe rented out space in the illegally converted warehouse. also - max harris - who's
accused of planning the unpermitted party... the attorney representing the victims' families says the men "created a death trap." torneys for warehouse operator derick almena say that their client is being made a scapegoat... calling the charges a "miscarriage of justice." each defendant could face up to 39 years in prison if convicted. grant? (grant) the man convicted in the murder of sierra lamar...learned his fate today. antolin garica- torres... will spend the rest of his life in prison...withou t the possibility of parole. a jury made the decision just a few hours ago in san

(vicki) a warning tonight after two mountain lion sightings... in the same neighborhood on the penninsula. the first incident was reported around 9:30 saturday night... in san carlos in the area of crestview drive. about two hours later... another sighting. kron four's lydia pantazes brings us more details. two mountain lion sightings on saturday night in san carlos were reported to the san mateo county sheriff's office. the first sighting was at about 9:40 p.m. when the driver of a vehicle said she saw a mountain lion cross in front of her. sheriff's officials said that the cat crossed from east to west on crestview drive just north of melendy drive. a second sighting occurred about two hours later in the 3300 block of brittan avenue where a resident said he saw a mountain lion standing on a hillside northeast of his carport. anyone who encounters a mountain lion should not run, but face the
cat, make noise and try to look bigger by waving their arms and throw rocks or other objects. (grant) early this morning -- a man opened fire in an orlando factory killing five of his former co-workers before turning the gun on himself. police say the 45-year-old gunman targeted his victims and there was bad blood with one of them. eight others were able to escape the rampage. police have identified the bodies of the
five victims. the former army veteran sparred the life of a woman who started working there after he was fired in april. upon leaving the r-v awning business -- the woman immediately notified police of the shooting. it is believed that this wasn't an act of terrorism. sheriff jerry denims:"in terms of this subject, this 45 year-old subject, when we look into his criminal history what we have found is that he has a criminal history minor and nature. charges such as: possession of marijuana, dui, and a misdemeanor battery". (catherine) the 79- year-old has dozens of other accusers....but this is the only oneto make it to trial... among those walking him into court today - the actress who played his youngest daughter on the cosby show.. the trial stems from an alleged assault on a woman named andrea constand... a canadian former basketball star who first went to police in 2005, a year after she says she was drugged and sexually assaulted by cosby. testimony began today with 'another' woman - who says cosby drugged and assaulted her at a los angeles hotel bungalow 2 decades ago. prosecutors were allowed to call her as a witness because the allegations are similar.. mark mara/former prosecutor when a jury has to say, 'who do i believe' - and another witness comes out and says 'he did it to me too' - it's almost game over. in opening statements, the prosecution painted cosby as a calculating man who abused his fame and power...and used a

(catherine) london police have released photos and names of two suspects insaturday's attack in london.... a 27-year-old man name khuram butt...a british citizen born in pakistan.and a 30-year-old named rachid redouane....who had claimed both moroccan and libyan nationality. they're two of the three suspects in the knife and van attack on and around london bridge -- that left 7 people dead. investigators are still trying to determine the identity of a third suspect.
