extra 1-5 seconds. that may not seem significant to some people but advocates say it can be the difference between someone crossing the street.. and almost crossing the street and potentially getting hit by a car. they say this is especially important to seniors and people with disabilities. we reached out to sfmta about the new plans. they tell us it was largely driven advocacy groups.. which have members that are directly affected by this. they are either elderly, or use a cane or wheelchair or for whatever reason need a little more time to cross the street. every year, there are about 20-30 pedestrian deaths in san francisco.. and advocates say.. this extra time will hopefully prevent at least some of them. the city tells us they will be implementing the new plan at 1200 intersections total. many of them are in the downtown, financial district and south of market areas. they tell us
they have already started implementing more time at some intersection such as geary and masonic . i spoke with a woman who is bart of a group called senior and disability action.. she is blind and uses a cane .. and says the extra time will make a difference.alice chiu/senior and disability action definitely anxiety.. i think the idea of you know crossing on time is you have to think about where the car is coming and how fast they are going. you can hear the skateboard coming, you know if you are not steady on your foot, it's scary, it's definitely scary and you know, car turning right in front of you and left in front of you, all those are concerns. and so knowing that we will have more time to cross, it's definitely a comfort (hermela aregawi)a total of 1200 crosswalks in the city will see added time. the city tells us it most of them will be done in the next 2-3 years.. and the project will be complete in the next 10 years.. coming up at 10... we'll hear from other pedestrians.. and drivers about the new changes. reporting live in san francisco hermela aredgawi kron 4 news. way to punich uber users.the airport says that exactly how much people would pay for the premium drop off or pick up is still under discussion. a final plan would still need to be approved by the airport commission, which is scheduled to discuss the issue next week. if the plan is approved, the new could go into effect as soon as july 1st. at sfo, charles clifford kron 4 news. news.clifford kron 4 at sfo, charles clifford kron 4 news.

((vicki/tele vo))hawaii's kilauea volcano could soon send boulders and ash shooting out of its summit crater. that kind of explosive eruption was last displayed by the volcano nearly a century ago.the threat of explosion has prompted the closure of hawaii volcanoes national park.howard dashefsky has the latest. aloha, i'm howard dashefsky reporting from just outside the hawaiian volcanoes national park. and over the shoulder you see the plume from the halemaumau crater inside. now we are outside the park because for the second time in a week this national park is closed. last saturday was the result of noxious gases being emitted from the volcano. this time, it is the fear that this vent behind me will have a massive steam explosion. the last time something like that happened was all the way back in 1924. the reason is, the lava lake inside which just a week ago before the present eruptions started, was all the way to the top raising over the edges. well since then it has lowered about 1,000 ft. the concern is, once that hot magma comes in contact with the cold ground water that's underneath, there is going to be a massive steam explosion. not a volcanic eruption, but an explosion that could shoot debris, rocks, and ash up into the sky. again when this
happened 94 years ago.. boulders the size of cars came out. they don't expect that but it could be marble or pea sized pebbles .. and ash.. and for that reason they have evacuated everyone from the national park and it is closed until further notice. again the concern is that this is gonna blow. the question is when. scientists of course . .they know it's nature so there is no saying when some big dramatic event might happen .. but the science tells them that something will. whether it be today, tomorrow, or the days to come. and as a result, this park remains off limits. reporting from just outside hvo, i'm howard dashefsky. we send it back to you.
