( darya )(ááá2 shotááá) a big story this morning. a state agency has floated the idea of charging a new tax on cell phone texting. ( james ) but kron4's maureen kelly reports that the proposal may have been delivered a setback by the f-c-c. (nats ) that ping of a new text message...is sounding like a ching ching to the california public ultilties commission....which has proposed taxing those electronic missives....to help pay for a program that makes phone services more accessible to the poor. there's already a surcharge on voice calls for that purpose....which is one reason why the bay area council thinks this is a bad idea. what's strange though the program that they have is already flush with $1 billion in funding and that is almost doubled over the last three or
four years so we're really kind of scratching her head about why this text is even necessarywe think taxes like this also discourage innovation and discourage people from wanting to be in california with the high-level of taxes that we already have so just continuing to add a new taxes like this that don't seem to have a strong purpose is misguidedbut the cpuc has said this proposal could allow them to tax callers less and texters more....saying it should end up as a wash from the consumers's perspective.... cell phone users i talked to had mixed opinions.if you would go to a good cause that would be something that i would be interested in, like if it is actually helping the less fortunate but it's going into the pocket of somebody who is already flushed and i'm against it a group representing the wireless industry is also against the tax..saying that texts are like emails....an information service, rather falling udner the telecommunication umbrella....and the f-c-c confirmed that classification the wireless industry group believes that weakens the c- p-u-c's legal standing to levy
a tax on texts. maureen kelly kron4 news ( james ) it's the season of giving... and several food banks in the bay area are in dire need of donations. the second harvest food bank of santa clara and san mateo counties announced they need one-point-one million dollars to get them through the holiday season, and feed thousands of people in need. they say disasters like the butte county fires have likely impacted local giving. elsewhere in the bay area-- the alameda county food bank also needs help. meantime the salvation army is asking for volunteers and donations as well. for more information on how you can help this holiday season-- go to our website at kron-4 dot com.
