(darya) good morning i'm darya folsom..(james) and i'm james fletcher. lets start the morning with a check of weather and traffic... skies much clearer to start the day today than the past two days with fog being limited this morning. temperatures will boost into the low to mid 60's with plenty of sunshine overhead to take us through the day and into the afternoon.
880 to 101. golden gat bridge drive time less than 30 min from 37 to the toll plaza. ( darya ) breaking overnight news. a 19 year old man was shot to death in east palo alto. the shooting happened just after midnight on the 12-hundred block of beech street. police tells us a shotspotter detected multiple gun shots fired in the area. when officers got to the scene, they found the man suffering from several wounds. he died on the scene. the gunman was able to get away. this is the third homcide in east palo alto this year. ( darya ) our top story this morning... students will see an increased police presence at diablo valley college after a threat was discovered on campus.( james ) kron 4's sara stinson is live at the campus in pleasanthill with the details. sara. parents are angry the school isn't shutting down after a
threat written in a bathroom was found here at diablo valley college yesterday.there will be an increase in police presence today - but parents say that's not enough. we have a picture of the threat - take a look at your screen.this was written in the bathroom stall in the humanities building.it reads quote "get ready - for the lucky person reading this - your life will be spared on thursday the 13th...the last day of classes i will imbecile classmates."the person then wrote - you're going to report this? i always get my way and signed the letter "z" plus - a drawing of a gun.campus police are continuing to investigate what they call a non-specific anonymous threat.there will have a signifigant police presence today.there will also be counselors standing by to help students who may feel
anxious about this threat. parents have reached out to kron four news saying the campus should be shut down due to the threat.police say if you see something suspicous - don't think twice about calling it in.live in pleasant hill, sara stinson, kron fours news. overnight --- we're learning of a possible homicide on the peninsula. police arrived to the home on valparaiso avenue around 5-30 wednesday night. that's in menlo park near west atherton. police say when they got there, they found a woman who was unresponsive. paramedics tried to revive her, but couldn't. police have taken one person taken into custody... as they investigate what happened. ( darya ) new this morning... police in san jose have arested a man for a homicide that happened earlier this week on chestnut street. terry hill is accused of killing a man on tuesday. police arrived at the scene and found a man suffering from a stab wound. police say hill later returned to the scene and was taken into charged with murder. ( james ) another big story we are following... the san francisco fire department is mourning the loss of one of its own . fire officials say steven pacatte died on his way to work yesterday in a car accident. he was hired back in january 20-16 ... and served at three different stations. he also recently deployed to help
fight the 'camp fire' in butte county. he leaves behind an expecting fiance... a mother, a father and sisters. ( james ) in the east bay... a bay area man attending college in texas is back in contra costa county and has pleaded guilty to charges that he threatened to kill the principal at freedom high school in oakley. he also pleaded guilty to threatening to shoot students and rape underage girls. the threats were made online. now tristin curl is facing charges of child pornography and investigators are looking for more possible victims. curl is being held on 500- thousand dollars bail. ( darya ) now to the now to the north bay ...where a man and woman are wanted for counterfeit theft. last sunday ... they went into a walmart in windsor and bought 1-thousand dollars in gift gards with fake 100-dollar bills. authorities say the amount they counterfeited hit the felony mark. if you recognize them call the sonoma county sheriffs office.
( james ) another big story we are following... christmas eve may be the last time you will get to see the raiders play in oakland.( darya ) the team is pulling out of a lease proposal to a lease proposal to play at the coliseum next season. kron 4's will tran is live at the raiders headquarters with the latest
( james ) new this morning. apple says it will create 20-thousand jobs in the united states over the next five years. the company announced this morning that it will spend 1 billion dollars to build a new campus in austin, texas. austin is already home to one apple campus. this is video of apple's largest campus in cupertino. and there's more to come. apple also plans to build new offices in seattle, san diego and culver city over the next three years. each will be home to more than one-thousand employees. apple says it will invest 30 billion dollars in american facilities and create 20-thousand american jobs by 20-23. ( james ) in the south bay... a family and community are grieving-- after a teacher was shot by police in his redwood city home.
right now-- an investigation is underway-- trying to piece together exactly how it happened. police say they acted in self defense when kyle hart... armed with a knife... threatened to take his own life.. he was then shot and killed by officers during what they characterized as a violent encounter in his back yard.
seeing security video of the car police are looking for. in it you can see the driver driving slowly up leavenwroth... stop... get out of the car and looks down the street. then the driver gets back in the car and drives away. ( darya ) police say they do have several pieces of evidence including the car's bumper and pieces of clothing. they are still looking for more witnesses. ( james ) you may remember the story of randall saito -- the patient who escaped a psychiatric hospital last year in hawaii before flying to san jose. (ááávidboxááá) after a year long investigation ... officials say saito did not get any help from the state hospital staff when he escaped in november 2017. he jumped in a taxi to the airport ... and then caught flights to maui and then san jose. he was captured days
later by authorities in stockton. saito had been hospitalized since 1981 after being found not guilty by reason of insanity of killing a woman. another investigation is underway that could provide more answers in to how he escaped. saito has pleaded not guilty to charges of escape and identity theft. ( james ) palo alto professor christine blasey ford is speaking out publicly for the first time since testifying in september against supreme court justice brett kavanaugh. she accused kavanaugh of sexual assault when they were both in high school. he denied the claim and was later sworn in as a supreme court justice in early october. blasey ford spoke out in a video to present sports illustrated's inspiration of the year award to rachael denhollander... the first woman to publicly accuse disgraced former u-s-a gymnastics doctor larry nassar of sexual abuse. in her remarks... blasey ford said the honoree "inspired other survivors to end their silence." billion dollars and counting in insured losses..( darya ) kron 4's capitol bureau reporter ashley za-val-a explains what the insurance commissioner says is going to be a tough, but necessary conversation for state and local leaders. state insurance commissioner dave jones announced thursday the insured loss of billions of dollars from the camp, woolsey and hill fires. standing in front of poster boards with nine-figure facts.. he says these numbers are just the beginning.."as the claims get perfected, as individuals get access to their former homes and neighborhoods, as they dialogue with their insurance company and share more information of the scope of their loss, we expect these numbers to rise. "the camp fire alone amounted to more than 7 billion dollars in losses... jones says many butte county residents either didn't have insurance or sufficient coverage."it's increasingly difficult for
people to find insurance in these areas. what's happening is the insurers are responding to climate change, the growing risk of more severe and more frequent and more unpredictable fires, and they're responding to their losses. they're raising prices and they're beginning to deny renewals and in some cases not write new insurance for some homes."this week, cal fire's chief said the state should consider banning the building of properties in fire prone areas...jones echoed this thursday.."that's going to be a hard conversation. everybody likes to build new, people obviously want to rebuild their communities, but we're in a moment, we're in a new era where these risks are so bad that we really have to take a look at how we're making these decisions. of giving... and several food banks in the bay area are in dire need of donations. the second harvest food bank of santa clara and san mateo counties announced they need one-point-one million dollars to get them through the holiday season, and feed thousands of people in need. they say disasters like the

richmond bridge drive less than 20 min from the toll to 101 ( james ) breaking news from overnight. police are looking for someone who stabbed at man at the powell street bart station in san francisco. police found the 33-year-old victm with wounds to his torso at around 9 o'clock last night. he was taken to the hospital. his condition is unclear this morning ... but police say his injuries were life threatening. police do not have a description of the attacker ... but if you know something ... they want to hear from you. ( darya ) take a look at this. a man trying to
break into a vacant restaurant in san lorenzo ends up stuck in a grease vent for nearly 2 days.( james ) kron 4's dan kerman has more on his rescue and the charges he is now facing. sot we hear these noise... ummm ummigor campos runs this tax business in san lorenzo .. for the last 24 hours he's been hearing a strange noise... when he finally investigated found a man stuck in the stove vent of the restaurant next doorsot john whiting/alameda county fire :29 when we first got in there and removed the grease coveres we could see a pair of high tops and lower legs and he could speak to us and he could not get out on his own her had been there for two days authorities believe the 29 year old san lorenzo man entered from the roof and then got stuck... sot sgt. ray kelly/alameda county sheriff's office 42we suspect he was
going to comit a burglary, we ant confirm that bu t we know suspect tend to break into abandoned buildign to steel copper and wiring and recycle that for moneywhen he was finally brought out, he was covered in grease.. authorities say he was in the early stages of dehydration and had he not been found today, he could have died.sot igor campos/campos tax services 104i feel lucky that he's ok i believe i saved his life because i think today or tomorrow he could be a lot worse than what it is standup dan kerman/san the suspect was taken to a hospital where the grease was removed and he was rehydrated. he is now facing vandalism and trespassing charges... in san lorenzo, dan kerman kron 4 news. ( james ) in the east bay ...a deadly hit-and-run remains unsolved nearly a year after it happened. and now police in oakland have asked for the community's help in solving the cold case... the deadly hit-and-run happened just after five in the morning at that intersection on 98th avenue and sunnyside street---
earlier this year on january first 2018. investigators say 18-year-old chauntel dunkley rochelle was in the intersection when she was struck and killed by a hit- and-run driver. investigators have very few leads in the case. the suspects vehicle is described as possibly a dark colored grey sedan. a ten thousand dollar reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest... ( james ) santa cruz police arrested a man after he was caught looking under bathroom stalls... inside women's restroom at cabrillo college. a female student told police tuesday that 25-year-old kenneth wilder ... enter the restroom and started making threats as he looked under stalls. the woman confronted wilder as he was leaving ... that's when he pushed the door shut... causing the door to strike the victim in the head. wilder ran off and was later arrested by police at a nearby target. we're told he is a registered sex offender... and is currently behind bars being held without bail. ( darya ) shoppers in the north bay are on edge ... after
a fight and a fire happened within hours of each other at a target in fairfield. police think that monday's fight between three homeless people happened because of an argument. one man was cut by a knife during the fight. then hours later ... a planter box outside the target caught fire. the two incidents are adding new concerns for people shopping there during the holidays. ( darya ) one man was arrested for the fight inside the store. and fire officials do not yet know if the homeless people around the store were to blame for a planter box fire. ( darya ) in the south bay ... police in morgan hill are searching for a man in a car-jacking that left a victim with minor injuries. it happened on monterey road back on november road back on on monterey it happened on monterey road back on november 23rd. this is a surveillance picture of the
man at a nearby business. police say the man used a knife to force another man out of his car. the suspect then stole a chevy pickup truck-- which officers found in san martin several hours later. ( james ) on the peninsula ... the san mateo county sheriff's office wants your help to find two package theives. a man and woman were caught on camera stealing from two homes in millbrae. one on the 400 block of broadway and the other the 500 block of bayview rd. the thefts happened monday afternoon. they were seen driving an early 2000's green colored saturn station wagon. invited curry to tour its facilities, so staff could prove it was real. but yesterday curry said, he was joking "one - thousand percent" but... he says he wants to take nasa up on its offer. across california is high... that's not surprising to anyone. and once you add tuition for school, or kid expenses, medical bills... it can really add up.( james ) that's why the city of stockton is testing out a new "basic income pilot program" --- where certain households will get a check each month to help with basic needs --- no strings attached. they are the first city in the country to test out a universal basic income program. 100 households in the city will get 500 dollars a month for the next 18 months as part of the pilot program. ( darya )the stockton project
has its roots in silicon valley, too. its financial backers include facebook cofounder chris hughes' organization, the economic security project - a fund to support research and cultural engagement around universal basic income. it contributed $1 million to the stockton initiative. ( james ) now to the south bay ... where theives stole christmas decorations from some homes in the willow gleen neighborhood. the first item to go missing, a mickey mouse decoration. it disappeared on december fourth. then on the 11th, thieves struck again .. removing minnie mouse and rudolph. one neighbor says this is not the first time this has happened in his
( james) ice sculptures are popular around the world this time of year. but a london museum now has a display of melting ice. the display in front of the tate modern museum in london is made up of 24 meltin icebergs. tate modern says they were fished out of a fjord in greenland after being detached from an ice sheet. the museum says it's meant to help visitors understand the reality of climate change. ( darya ) sesame street is raising awareness of childhood homelessness with the addition of a new muppet to the show. this is lilly --- a character whose family has lost their home. lily was originally
described as being 'food- insecure' ... because her family lacked consistent access to food. now, sesame workshop has expanded lily's storyline ... to include that her family stays with friends. lily's journey with homelessness will not appear in televised episodes-- only in online resources. the initiative launched wednesday as a part of the 'sesame street in communities' program.
