the main reasons oakland teachers are on strike. bay area housing costs are soaring... and commutes are getting longer. this is a look at teachers salaries in several other local school districts. the new haven district in union city...

pays its starting teachers ... 71-thousand dollars... that would be a fifty - percent y hike from the 46-thousand- five hundred dollars ... for new teachers in oakland. that gap widens with tenure... here are the average salaries... showing oakland teachers are ten- thousand behind alameda.. and the ending salaries ... less than 85-thousand in oakland... while union city... fremont... and pleasanton teachers are all in the six - figures. many famalies also stood in solidarity with teachers and staff on strike... with recreation centers opening their doors to accomomodate those in need. organizers at local centers in oakland doing their best to keep kids busy. for those who registered ahead of the time... free lunch, snacks and adult supervision were available at the salvation army on garden street. other rec centers say they're happy to help... but also need more staffing to accommodate the demand.

( james ) another big story we are following this morning... a suspended san francisco police officer has pleaded guilty to robbin two banks. the robberies happened back in november. rain daugherty is same officer implicated in a racist text message scandal back in 2015. police say daugherty got away with more than 9-thousand dollars from the banks. daugherty was suspended last year without pay because of a criminal investigation in san mateo county. in that case he is accused of stealing more

than 13-thousand dollars from a man with alzheimer's. daugherty faces up to 40 years in prison for the bank robberies. ( james ) breaking international news from overnight... a powerful 7-point-5 magnitude earthquake hit eastern ecuador. this is video showing a chandelier swaying during the quake. this was cenetered near the country's border with peru. so far there are no reports of any injuries. ( james ) we're learning more about a coast guard lieutenant, and former marine... who police say was planning to kill democratic lawmakers, cable news anchors, and random citizens. he appeared in a federal court in maryland yesterday. christopher paul hasson is charged with a number of gun and drug offenses. washington correspondent morgan wright reports federal officials say hasson-is a white supremacist who was stockpiling weapons and ammunition he hoped to use to launch a terrorist attack. prosecutors say the drug and gun charges against coast

guard lt. christopher paul hasson are just the "tip of the iceberg." they allege he's a domestic terrorist that plotted a mass killing. the sheer number and force of the weapons that were recovered from mr. hasson's residence in this case coupled with the disturbing nature in writings appear to reflect a very significant threat. prosecutors say hasson stashed firearms, and ammunition. and had hit list including prominent lawmakers and journalists.hasson also declared he was a neo-nazi for more than 30 years and wanted to establish a "white homeland" we need to combat hatred and bigotry wherever it arises because it can become violent. senator richard blumenthal of connecticut was one of the lawmakers hasson planned to target. this kind of extremism unfortunately is a lot more prevalent than it should be in this country today the number of white supremacist groups is increasing. richard cohen with the southern poverty law center released a recent report showing hate crimes are

on the rise. their level of violence was very high this year and i think we're in for a long ride in our country as our demographics continue to shift.and he worries the violence will increase. i think those people may say the political system doesn't work for me i have to act out. prosecutors say at this point none of the charges are proven beyond a reasonable doubt. for now hasson will be held for 14 days while the government weighs additional ( james ) in a statement provided by the coast guard, it says -- hassen was arrested last week as a "result of an ongoing investigation led by the coast guard investigative service, in copperation with the f-b-i and the department of justice." coming up on the kron 4 morning news ... a student is punched in the face... on the uc berkeley campus. hear what started this violent assault. plus... new details on this officer involved shooting in napa... after investigators learn more about the shooter's lengthy criminal past.

monterey road, hundreds of new potholes have appeared in the last month because of the rains... and existing potholes and cracks have been made worse by flooding. city crews filled an estimated 10-thousand potholes in a typical year... and their goal is to get a crew out to fill a pothole within 48 hours after it was reported. ( james ) three-time all star draymond green will be on hand this afternoon when the "draymond green court" is unveiled at the downtown oakland ymca. the draymond green court is a refurbished basketball court paid for by various local organizations. after the unveiling, dozens of bay area youth basketball players will participate in an nba-style workout hosted by green and warriors basketball camps. ( darya ) another big story we are following this morning... actor jussie smollet was back on the set of "empire" the same day that police charged him with orchastrating a violent attack on himself. these are sketches from smollet's court appearance yesterday. he is maintaining his innocence. yesterday... smollet held a meeting with the cast of "empire" and asked for their support while insisting he is

innocent. this happened after police in chicago laid out their case saying that smollet paid two brothers 35-hundred dollars to attack him. smollett is due back in court in three weeks. ( james ) 4 your money this morning... it's tax season and federal officials are warning people about scammers trying to steal your refund. one involves someone calling you. the caller will claim to be with the i-r-s... and try to get you to make a bogus payment. the i-r-s says if you get a call... don't give them any money - the i-r-s does not call people asking for payments. the best thing to do is hang up -- then report the call to the tax agency. other scammers send emails pretending to be the i-r-s... these phishing scams will ask for personal information like your bank account number. and be on the lookout for shady tax preparers -- make sure you do some research on anyone you use to prepare your return. get their "preparer tax identification number" -- that will show if they have the proper qualifications. ( james ) while most oakland teachers are walking the picket lines ... a lot of them are simply walking away... about five hundred of them quit last year... at one middle school, the turnover was 90 percent over a ten year period. the main reason is money... housing costs are soaring ... commutes getting longer ... and it doesn't take a math teacher to figure out that the grass is a lot greener just a few miles away. here's grant lodes with the story. if oakland teachers know how to do anything ... it's homework.they've reseached what their colleagues are getting in nearby school districts .sfxthe new haven district in union city pays its starting teachers 71=thousand dollars ... that would be a fifty percent pay raise from the 46=thousand five hundred for new teachers

( james ) happening today... stockton street in san francisco's union square will reopen for the first time in 7 years.( darya ) it was closed because of closed it was ( darya ) it was closed because of construction on the central subway in san francisco. kron 4's sara stinson is live in san francisco with the details. businesses here around union square are relieved to have construction on stockton street done as it was nonstop dust and noise for seven years during the central subway project.stockton street will now be open from geary to ellis streets - this stretch runs union square down to market street which is directly above the subway's biggest station.this will not

before 10:00 last night on vineyard boulevard behind the safeway on tennant station. the victim suffered only minor injuries. the truck that hit the pedestrian is described a fullsized black or dark gray pickup with a lift kit and black rims. now to the north bay... we have new information about the armed man who was shot and killed by a napa county sheriff's deputy on sunday. according to immigration officials... javier hernandez- morales had previously been deported three -times prior to the shooting. body cam video showing... the shooter firing two shots at napa county sheriff deputy riley jarecki.deputy riley county sheriff shots at napa county sheriff deputy riley jarecki. ice claims the incident may have been prevented if they had been notified about any of the multiple times hernandez- morales was released from jail.

( james ) humanitarian groups say they're worried for the safety of asylum seekers due to a new policy that forces them to wait in mexico while their cases are processed. the "remain in mexico policy" has had several problems. kron4's washington correspondent alexandra limon explains. immigration advocates want the court to block the trump administration's new 'remain in mexico" policy. we think it's wrong we think it violates us lawrichard cohen is the president of the southern poverty law center which filed the lawsuit with

"valley patriots." the group's members planned to wear their maga hats wednesday... but maddie was told she couldn't do so on campus. she was also told she could not wear a trump hat with school colors on it, because school colors on it, because of the school's dress code. but the clovis unified school district's dress code does not specify if politicial hats or shirts are allowed. a former federal district judge says the student's first amendment right is being stripped... but the district may have the right to do so.
