from 37 to the toll plaza. richmond bridge drive 1 ( darya ) teachers in oakland will be back in the classrooms today after reaching a deal with the school district to end the seven day teachers strike. members of the oakland education association voted to accept the contract from the school district. teachers
lined up at the paramount theater to vote on the districts deal yesterday. the union and the district have been negotiating for the past two years. teachers were demanding higher wagers, smaller class sizes and more resources. here's a breakdown of what's inside the new contract. teacher's are getting an 11-percent salary increase.. with a 3-percent bonus. they will see lower class sizes...one student will be removed from each classroom. there will be more student support...which will reduce caseloads for counselors from a ratio of 600 students to one counsleor... to 500 students. the district is also pausing the closure of some scools. ( james ) breaking news we are following this morning... at least 23 people are dead following a series of tornados in alabama and georgia. this is video of just some of the damage in those two states. search and rescue efforts are happening right now... and aloffiin alabama say the

storms telling the people of alabama and georgia to be safe. ( james ) new this morning...police in pacifica are searching for answers after two people were found dead inside a home. officers found the bodies yesterday afternoon in the 11-hundred block of banyan way. right now, there are no suspects and police say there's no public safety concern. ( darya ) a memorial service is happening today for san francisco public defender jeff adachi. it will take place at 11 oclock- at city hall ... its open to the public. the 59-year old died last month, after dining with a friend in north beach. police say, they have ruled out foul play in the death. however, the public defender's office has asked the san francisco board of supervisors ... for a formal investigation into adachi's passing. ( darya ) in the east bay... four people were shot over the weekend inside a business in downtown oakland. the victims, two men and two women, were shot just after midnight sunday at a business in the 300 block of 14th street. a man has
been arrested in connection with the shooting. police were not able to provide any additional information about what led to the shooting or the identity of the shooter. ( darya ) we're learning more about an assault that happened on the u-c berkley campus last month. authorities say, a man who is not a student at the university, passed through the open market place and got into an altercation with hayden williams. on friday, officers arrested zachary green who was caught on camera punching williams in the face. witnesses say the victim was out protesting actor jussie smollett, who is accused of staging a hate crime. u-c berkeley says neither williams or green are affiliated with the university. ( james ) happening today...city leaders in petaluma could approve the construction of a safeway gas station along a busy intersection. dozens of people walked along mcdowell boulevard yesterday speaking out against the project. if approve... the gas station would be built at the
against five san mateo county deputies involved in a deadly tasing incident. back in october... 36-year-old chinedu okobi was tased 4 separate times... when a deputy attempted to stop him while he was walking on el camino real in the city of millbrae. he was later pronounced dead at the scene. the d-a's report revealed okobi was unarmed... was ánot under the influence of any drugs or alcohol... and hadn't been a suspect in any crimes. the d-a's office also said... okobi suffered from mental illness... and failed to submit to a lawful order to stop walking. ( darya ) the family's attorney is now preparing a civil claim against san mateo county sheriff's office. ( james ) in sacramento....stephon clark's family says their hearts are broken again. no charges will be filed against
the police officers who fatally shot the man in 20-18. ( darya ) john lawrence has the story. protests this weekend in sacramento.....stevante clark/stephon clark's brother "i would like accountability. i want justice and accountability."the county's district attorney announced this weekend that no charges will be filed against the two police officers who fatally shot....stephon clark nearly a year ago.anne marie schubert/district attorney"was a crime committed? there's no question that a human being died. but when we look at the facts and the law. and we follow our ethical responsibilities the answer to that question is no."nat sound from police tapethe officers were responding to a vandalism call when they came across clark in his grandmother's backyard.clark, who was unarmed, was shot at least seven times.salena manni/stephon clark's fiance "my boys, aiden and cairo, have to grow up without their shooting stance and that.... 101 ( james ) governor gavin newsom says he is not giving up on california's high speed rail project. our capitol bureau reporter ashley zavala has the details. ((pkg)) "the irony is not lost on me"governor gavin newsom says the state is going to prove it's holding up its federal agreement for the high
speed rail."in essence what i said only reinforced what we need to do legally under the grant which is focus on the central valley, the federal regulations require that focus."((nats--)) the governor spent friday morning reading to children at an elementary school in sacramento. he encouraged kids to never give up...later with reporters he made it clear he's not giving up on the rail project or its federal money... the governor confirmed the state is putting together a detailed response to the federal rail road administration to avoid losing 3.5 billion dollars for the project. the fra decided to cancel the money after the governor announced immediate plans for the project would only include a segment from bakersfield to modesto."that's why they'll see very well that what we're doing is consistent with the regulations and rules and that's why we decision we made going forward." newsom spent part of
this week in washington d.c. he says he had conversations with the trump administration plan and agreement. richmond bridge drive less than 20 min from the toll to 101 ( james ) ( james ) the two young sisters from northern california that went missing on friday have been found alive... humboldt county sheriff deputies say 8- year old leia carrico and 5- year old caroline carrico spent nearly 44 hours in the forest. the girls were last seen friday at their home and somehow ended up nearly 2 miles away. they were found "safe and sound" on sunday morning by a fire captain and firefighter who followed the girls' boot tracks. ( james ) although the girls were
dehydrated and cold, they were not hurt and they were in good spirits. the sheriff says the girls were trained in outdoor survival through their local 4-h club and authorities believe that helped them. ( james ) oakland unified school district superintendent -kyla johnson trammell released a statement on the end of the strike. it reads in part: "my hope is that this new contract demonstrates our commitment to recruiting and keeping the best teachers in oakland. we know that not all members were fully supportive of the contract terms. i understand the sense of
urgency to fix all of our long-standing fiscal and systems issues, but the reality is that it will take a few years to stabilize the district. ( darya ) breaking overnight...at least 23 people are dead after several tornadoes ripped through alabama and georgia sunday. this appears to be the deadliest day for tornadoes in the state since 20-11. lee county sheriff jay jones says it appears "as if someone had taken a blade and just scraped the ground." several homes were damaged by the storm and agencies are helping with the search for people trapped inside the rubble.
the body of kyra scarlet. investigators say kyra, her friend and her dog were trying to avoid the high tide when the landslide occured. the two and the dog were trapped in the mud. her friend and dog were saved but kyra was never found. ( james ) officials believe kyra's body was likely swept out to sea by the high tide. ( darya ) cracks have been discovered in the windows of- the salesforce tower. two pieces of interior glass have cracked... one on the 12th floor the other on the 14th. bill strawn with the san francisco department of building inspection says a reporter notified the city about the crack. in a statement the building owner says they acted immediately to
determine the cause of the cracked windows and to took preventative steps. a building inspector has now been briefed by the property owner but the city is not conducting its own investigation. ( darya ) becuase these were interior pieces of glass, there's no concern for anything falling on the sidewalk. both pieces of glass are expected to be replaced sometime this month. ( james ) another big story we are following this morning... the cleanup efforts following the massive floods in guernevill. here you can see the difference in water levels... after the russian river crested. families in the tight-nit
community are still assessing the damage. kron four's philippe djegal takes a look at how people are starting to pick up the pieces. (philippe)lauren cabitac/nats- "here's the waterline. so, this is the highest point it got here." lauren cabitac and her husband walter, rode the storms out in their home along highway 116... watching thruriver rising and eventually stream into their house. the damage is significant. the lower part of the home will have to be completed remodled. the house, like so many others in guerneville also yellow-tagged. the home won't really be considered safe until the sheetrock downstairs is removed... and, the electrical panel submerged in flood waters drys out.lauren cabitac/homeowner- "i don't really know, but i bet there's probably at least 50 or 60-thousand in damage."
so far, the county has assessed the damage up here at 155-million dollars. impacting 19-hundred homes -- most of them severely damaged... and, 578 businesses.nats- "can we give you a cleaning kit today? oh my god, that would be so awesome. excellent -- i'll pass that through." throughout the day, the american red cross passing out cleaning kits... including bleach and gloves, to neighbors like the cabitac's disinfecting their homes. the county also making large garbage bins available to people needing a place to throw away destroyed furniture and other trash. piles of debris lined up along the highway, becoming an all too familiar sight. and, the oddity of people having to powerwash the interiors of their space.lauren cabitac/homeowner- "it's the price you pay for living in paradise, and we appreciated everyday." the cabitac's also appreciate the love and support they've received from friends and family... keeping them company during the beginning stages of what may be a long journey back to square one. in guerneville, philippe djegal, kron four news. ( james ) an oregon man is thanking rescuers and taco bell after he and his dog survived being stranded in the snow for five days. jeremy taylor says his s-u-v got stuck in snow last sunday...he says he fell asleep and woke up the following day to even more snow.. taylor says he tried to walk but the snow was too deep..so he and the dog returned to the car. over the next few days he told
authorities that he stayed warm by periodically starting his vehicle and using taco sauce packets as food. taylor was rescued friday after he was spotted by a snowmobile rider.
