( darya ) in the south bay... police are warning about a spike in car burglaries in milpitas-- since the beginning of this year...( james ) the majority of these burglaries happened in the parking lots of shopping centers. kron 4's will tran is joining us now live with what you need to know. beginning of the year the city has seen an explosion of car burglaries ... most of them in areas many think are safe here's the breaking downsince the beginning of the year there have been 145 car burglaries.... 88 of them happened in january alone 57 of them last monththese are the hot spots... mccarthy ranch... the great mall... milpitas square and ulferts centerpolice don't know exactly why there has been an increase in car burglaries but say they are increasing patrols in those areas

following... richmond police say a group of men were arguing outside hilltop mall before shots were fired last night. the mall closed early following the shooting that happened just before 6. when officers arrived at the mall they could not find any victims, but they did see a trail of blood. the victim took himself to the hospital with a single gunshot wound that was non-life threatening. ( james ) happening today... up to 915 san mateo county employees will go on strike. the are all human services employees. the strike will last today and tomorrow. the county will maintain essential services but some locations may be closed in order to centralize services. ( darya ) school board members in oakland have decided to make 22 million dollars in cuts. this decision comes after the teachers union voted in favor of their new contract over the weekend. yesterday during

a three- hour board meeting... the oakland unified school district board voted 4 - 3 ... to make the massive cuts to next school year's budget. dozens of students, teachers, and members of the community expressed disappointment and even anger at the board for its plan. but, the teachers union is defending the decision. ( darya ) library programs, foster care case managers, african american male acheievement, and restorative justice .... are among the programs slated to be cut. everyone is now hoping the governor's office steps in... and provides more

funding to save the programs. ( james ) in the east bay... police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found on a dirt trail near the arroyo creek... in livermore. police are treating the death as suspicious. the body was found just before 8oclock yesterday morning..lying in shrubbery off the trail. authorities have not identified the body. ( james ) on the peninsula... police in south francisco are investigating a shooting that left a 17-year-old in the hospital. yesterday... police say they responded to reports of a shooting on magnolia avenue in south san francisco. the initial investigation showed the 17- year-old was shot by an unknown suspect as he was standing near a parked car.. the suspect immediately took off... no description so far. the victim has non-life threatening injuries. ( darya ) new this morning... it is getting even more expensive to live in san francisco. according to c-net... the average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is now more than 36-hundred dollars. that's up 9% from last year.

it is also 30% higher than rent in new york city. and while the prices in san francisco went up... the average price of a one bedroom apartment actually went down across the country. experts say part of the problem is that there isn't enough housing to go around. ( james ) developing news we ae following... the death toll stands at 23 in alabama after deadly tornadoes ripped through over the weekend. at this point officials say at this point officials say there are no more people missing - with 10 people still hospitalized. officials say one of the tornadoes packed winds of 170 miles per hour. this is just some video of the damage. homes were ripped off of their foundations. and now we are starting to hear stories from friends of survivors.

( darya ) new this morning... a controversial federal surveillance program is now shutdown. a republican congressional official says the n-s-agency has abandoned a surveillance program that relied ondata collected from cell phone records. the official says the program needed to be reauthorized at the end of the last year, but the trump administration did not extend it. the program relied on information such as who was being called or texted, as well as how long the communication was. ( james ) new this morning... a patient in london may be the second person to ever be cured of h-i-v.

researchers say the unidentified man was treated with stem cell transplants from donors who carried a rare genetic disorder that made them resistant to h-i-v. according to the case study the london patient has been in remission for 18 months. doctors warn that the methods used may not work for everyone. but the news offers hope for new treatment strategies, including gene therapy. ( james ) for your health this morning... a new study finds the measles... mumps and rubella vaccine does not raise the risk of autism. those are the conclusions of a study of more than 650- thousand children in denmark the lead researcher said the idea that vaccines cause autism is still around and is getting a lot of attention on social media. meanwhile, the world health organization has ranked the reluctance to vaccinate as a top 10 threat to global health this year. ( jane )good morningamazon is cranking up the speed of its bay area retail expansion.it will open its third go location in downtown san francisco.the store will the ground floor of chevron's former headquarters at 575 market street.the amazon go stores tend to be in bustling areas that cater to customers in a time crunch.subaru is recalling as many as 2.3 million vehicles globally to fix a defect that prevents the brake-light switch from working properly.according to the company, the flaw affects certain models of impreza, crosstrek and forester cars from 2008 to 2017.owners will be notified by subaru.results from a new survey illustrate the changing attitudes about weddings among the next generation.for the first time, wedding-planning brand the knot has included members of

suspended for a daycare where a worker was caught on camera throwing a toddler. take a look at this video. this happened last month in missouri. you can see the worker drag a three year old child and toss the child into a piece of furniture. the child spent three days in the hospital and received seven stitches. the woman in the vdeo has been arrested and charged with child abuse. the daycare i still open while it appeals the state's decision to suspend its license. ( james ) in the north bay... after devastating flooding in guerneville... victims say, they are now concerned about toxic waste. piles of debris are scattered around after last week's flooding. the flood destroyed some items and caused others to mold...which could be toxic. some residents were told by recology workers that they wouldn't be coming back to clean up additional items... they say it would be the residents job to get it hauled away.

yesterday. adachi died unexpectedly on february 22nd.. he had served as the city's public defender since 2002. those who spoke at the service all agreed... he was a man dedicated to his work. ( darya ) adachi died from what investigators believe was a heart attack in a telegraph hill apartment. he was 59 years old. ( james ) a big national story we are following... house democrats are stepping up their investigations into president trump. the house judiciary committee sent letters requesting inofrmation from 81 people connected to the president. manu raju has the latest. the house judiciary committee today announcing a sprawling investigation into the president's inner circle .. trying to uncover evidence that the president obstructed justice and abused his power.

firestorm across the newport mesa unified school district in orange county. extra police officers patrolled the campuses yesterday... several students posted on social media asking for their classmates to wear blue to denounce anti- semitism and bigotry. the superintendent also released a statement denouncing the photos.
