the order does the following: 1. puts in place an executive moratorium on the death penalty in the form of a reprieve for all individuals sentenced to death in california.2. withdrawals california's lethal injection protocol3. immediately closes the execution chamber at san quentin4. states clearly the directive does not provide for the release of any individual from prison or otherwise alter any current conviction or sentence. governor newsom's statement reads in part.....in america, we execute more human beings than any other democracy on earth. in california, we have the largest death row of any place in the western hemisphere - more than 700 prisoners. and we have spent $5 billion since

... a former california highway patrol officer who says he was harassed and discriminated on the job for being gay is suing the c-h-p and eight other officers. jay brome now works at a clothing store in benicia. he entered the police academy in 19-96 and remained with the c-h-p for 20 years before retiring. he says his time spent with the c-h-p was full of abuse and discrimination targeting him because he was gay. and he says the c-h-p did nothing about it.

busy san francisco intersection is adding a bike lane... after a cyclist was killed last friday. this is video from the crash that killed 30-year-old tess rothstein. she was hit by a truck friday morning near sixth and howard streets. the part of howard street where rothstein died did not have a protected bike lane... so now officials will be adding physical barriers on the north side of the street. rothstein's death is the fourth traffic-related death on howard street in the past three years. ( darya ) also new this morning ... we know the names of the two men fatally shot in oakland. this happened last month at a gas station in the 9700 block of edes avenue. 27-year-old maurice cooper... died at the scene... while 42-year-old cassius stroman was taken to the hospital where he later died. two women and another man were also injured in the shooting and survived. no one has been arrested. (robin) in the east bay ... teachers in dublin could decide this week to go on strike. members of the teachers association are taking a strike authorization vote. this means if a contract settlement cannot be

reached with the dublin unified school district-- teachers will strike. they are asking for smaller class sizes and a small raise. the voting will go through noon on friday at dublin high school ( darya ) a cloverdale high school teacher was arrested after police uncovered evidence of a fight club inside their special education classroom. police say spedical ed teacher federico vargas was actually refeering fights in his classroom. multiple student injuries were discovered in the investigation ... at least one requiring medical treatment. it's unknown exactly how many fights there actually were ... but police say at least one was captured on camera by a student. one of vargas' students say it's unfair that he's been arrested. at cloverdale high school for 8 years ... and is now on leave pending the investigation. he turned himself into police saturday and faces 13 counts of contributing to the deliquency of a minor and 5 counts of endangering children. (robin) an elementary school in north carolina is in hot water ... over a slavery board game that its students played in class.the game - called "escaping slavery" - and it infuriated at least one family whose child goes to the school.(robin) this happened in a fourth grade class at codington elementary in wilmington. papers from the slavery board game depicts shackles, dice and a slave groups played the game

governor gavin newsom is ending the death penalty in california..he is expected to make the announcement this morning..( robin ) kron 4's will tran is joining us now live from san quentin prison ... which is the only prison in california holding male death row inmates. ( will )death row inmates in california are getting a reprieve wednesday as gov. gavin newsom plans to place a moratorium on the death penalty in the state, his office announced tuesday. the move immediately closes the execution chamber at san quentin state prison where executions in california are carried out, though no one has been executed since 2006. currently, there are 737 condemned inmates in california. "i do not believe that a civilized society can claim to be a leader in the its government continues to premeditated and discriminatory people," newsom said in a statement. the order does the following: 1. puts in place an executive moratorium on the death penalty in the form of a reprieve for all individuals sentenced to death in california.2. withdrawals california's

(robin) p-g and-e will not face criminal charges related to the 20-17 wildfires in the north bay. the sonoma county district attorney's office made the announcement yesterday. they say there is not enough evidence to prove p-g and-e acted with a reckless disregard for human life. which they say is the standard to sustain criminal charges. last year --- calfire did determine that p-g-and e's equipment caused numerous fires in four counties. however -- p-g and e remains on federal criminal probation. and they are facing several pending lawsuits related to the fires. (robin) it was an emotional day for oakland city councilwoman lynette gibson mcelhaney as she spoke for the first time about her son's murder. victor mcelhaney was shot and killed during an apparent robbery attempt last weekend in los angeles.

( darya ) house democrats have introduced a new bill aimed at providing a pathway to citizenship for more than one million undocumented immigrants in the u-s. it's called the "dream and promise act", and was unveiled by house speaker nancy pelosi. the measure would give undocumented immigrants who came to the u-s as children permanent resident status for 10 years, as well as cancel removal proceedings if certain

students to get into good schools these days? yes yes, especially here. when it comes to her kids education, n order for my kids to go to a better school district, i moved to palo alto yes.a move like that isn't uncommon -- but this recent college cheating scandal has palo alto parents shockedthat was really unfair cheating out students who actually deserved a spot in those elite schools.
