disabled and people of color. and then there's the financial impact. the governor's office says the death penalty system has cost california billions of dollars since 1978. of all the states, california has the most people on death row. california has not executed any inmate since 2006. the order does not provide for the release of any inmate or alter any current conviction or sentence. governor newsom says he is considering commuting death sentences as a next step. newsom also supports repealing the death penalty. democratic lawmakers introduced a ballot measure to do so next year.

avenue. when sheriff's deputies arrived on scene they found the man and woman in an s-u-v. after trying to make contact ... officials say the driver put the car in reverse towards deputies. that is when deputies fire. the man in woman is recovering at a local hosptial for her injuries. none of the deputies were hurt. ( darya ) new this morning... a hit and run driver is now behind bars. police arresting 41-year old nakleh kare. for hitting a woman walking along olden gate avenue monday. police saying they tried to chase him down, but lost him in the pursuit. he was later arrested tuesday and booked into jail, where he's being held without bail. ( james ) south bay police arrested a man in possession of several illegal weapons. last friday morgan hill police received a report of a person possibly impersonating an officer. when they served a search warrant at the suspect's house. they found a cache of weapons. including several magazines. 34

( darya ) our other big story this morning. the f-a-a has grounded all boeing 737 max 8 and 9 jets following sunday's deadly ethiopian airlines crash.( james ) the grouding is impacting travel at our local airports. kron4's sara stinson is live at s-f-o with more. at s-f-o at southwest - the airline had 31 boeing 737 aircrafts in service - but they are all grounded indefinitely now that an emergency order was put in

place by president trump.all boeing 737 max eight and max nine are grounded right now in the wake of the crash of an ethiopian airliner that killed 157 people.other countries had previously grounded these planes already - but the f-a-a said it didn't have any data showing the boeing max's were unsafe and were against the grounding. president donald trump issued the emergency order wednesday saying new information has come to light in the ongoing investigation into the crash.satelite based tracking shows there are similarities between the deadly ethiopian airlines and the lion air crash that happened back in october 20- 18. as dozens of countries continue to search for answers - the investigtion will continue on in paris, france. for now the grounding will definitely be impacting flights, but this morning we will check in with passengers to see how they're feeling about this...live at sfo sara stinson kron four news.

alameda coliseum authority will vote on a lease agreement to allow the raiders to stay in oakland next season. the raiders new stadium in las vegas is set to open for the 20-20 season and the raiders have been looking for a place to play this season. one coliseum offical says the teams had reached an agreement late last year but it fell apart after the city sued the raiders for moving to vegas. the new agreement would also allow the raiders to start the 20-20 season in oakland if the vegas stadium is not complete. if the coliseum authority approves the lease... it will still need to be approved by the city council. academy doesn't have football team. another marin academy parent, agustin huneeus jr is accused by the feds of paying rick singer --- the alleged ring leader of the scheme --- to help his daughter cheat on the sat test. and bribing to get her onto usc's water polo team by fabricating her athletic profile. marin academy has issued a statement saying there is no indication that anyone at the school was aware of or participated in the alleged illegal and highly unethical behavior. ( darya ) in the east bay ... dozens of students walked out of class to protest the adminstration's handling of racist graffiti being found on the walls of a campus bathroom. students at diablo valley college in pleasant hill are voicing ut of to protest the incident happened a week ago and students say they were notified days later.

empire actor jussie smollett is due back in court today to enter a plea in his disorderly conduct case. smollett is accused of lying to police about being the victim of a racist and homophobic attack by two men in chicago at the end of january. prosecutoes allege smollet staged the attack because he was unhappy with his salary on the show empire and wanted to promote his career. a grand jury indicted him on 16 felony counts. prosectors and smollett's defense attorneys agreed to let cameras into today's hearing. person was killed and another injured when two small planes collided at a regional airport in the los angeles area. it's unclear whether the accident happened in the air or on the ground.officials say a single-engine plane crashed into another craft, which caught fire and collided on the tarmac. the injured person was taken to the hospital -- so far, no word on their condition.the national transportation safety board will investigate the accident. ( james ) the winter season is slowly fading... but that means summer road which cod delays. in marin county... the emergency repair project will tie-up drivers on the 101 southbound between spencer ave and the robin williamsthe road... which is expected to last until monday... and they're shutting down several lanes because of it. announcement this morning. kron 4 was the first to tell you about this last night after it was confirmed by our sister station in el paso texas. speculation on whether he would run for president has been discussed since his senate loss to ted cruz in november. the field of democratic candidates already includes california senator kamala harris, elizabeth warren, and bernie sanders. ( darya ) the american civil liberties union recently discovered local police departments are giving ice access to people's personal data. and it's all happening through license plates. the a-c-l-u believes ice is using e undocumented immigrants. more than 80 local law enforcement agencies nationwide are said to be involved. the a-c-l-u says granting ice access to this information violates the california values act which prevents police from sharing personal data to enforce immigration laws.

(á2 shotá)( james ) the arrest an undocumented immigrant accused in the murder of a san jose woman has rekindled the debate over to what extent local law enforcement should cooperate with federal authorities.( darya ) as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, santa clara county says it's only following the law, despite criticism from other local uspe arevalo carranza, an undocumented immigrant with a long criminal history, was arrested in connection with the brutal murder of 59 year old bambi larson of san jose. police on tuesday been locked up and released from the santa clara county jail twice in recent months. but before he allegedly stalked and stabbed larson to

death late last month, carranza had been ordered detained by ice nine times in an effort to stop him from offending again. but those requests were thwarted by local sanctuary policies mean to protect undocumented immigrants who are not considered a threat to the public. echoing previous criticizm of the policy, san jose mayor sam liccardo in a statement said.. ".....the current policy of ignoring detainer requests undermines public safety and violates common sense..." the mayor called for restarting the conversation on the policy. sheriff laurie smith said... '...it has been my long standing position that we should notify ice of all undocumented immigrants who are serious or violent felons...i will advocate for changing the policy..." also in a statement, county supervisor dave corteze reminded critics of the policy that the courts have thus far ruled that the county cannot hold immigrant suspects for ice without a warrant or judicial order unless the individual is currently charged with a crime. corteze insisted that ice is indeed notified ofcustody releases in real time but that ice often shows up too late to take action.county council james williams clarified the policy. james williams/santa clara county council "...there has been a lot of confusion about the law and about what the county can and cannot do.

( james ) shares of boeing dropped by 3 percent right after president trump announced all the boeing super max jets would be grounded in the u-s. it did rebound later in the day wednesday... but boeing's overall stock is still down about 10 percent since the ethiopian airlines crash this weekend. that has cost the company a total of 25 billion dollars so far... and that could grow. as some airlines are asking them to pay for the losses they're suffering from the planes being grounded.
