before it was protest last night were peaceful. mayor roberts says she was on the streets last night listening to people and said that was an example of a lawful demonstration. chief puttney says he is not ready to release the video from the shooting. while protests are happening on the streets of charlotte, one man tried to calm racial tensions by giving out hugs. ken started the free hugs project two years ago after the boston he has gone across the country with a message of peace. last night that included embarrassing officers in full riot gear in the middle of violent protests. some protesters did taunt him for doing it though. he then turned to them and explained that the police sometimes need compassion too. >> michelle: a group of young adults who wound up in court because of their addictions are now paddling their way to success. they're training for the dragon boat festival. this is happening at lake
talking about cancer here. this group of young adults 18-28 will complete in the st. rose regatta to raise funds for others who are battling cancer. chief judge cedric kern is the one who puts these young adults on these mandatory assignments like the one you see here. participants only get two practices before competing in the dragon race. and new participants don't know what they're training to do. we talked from the program. >> keeps getting younger and younger. but thanks to programs like this if you ever do get yourself in that situation they offer you a way out when the pain gets great enough. >> they're broken down. they're at the bottom. to see them get a life back and to see their parents get a life back, it is as rewarding as you can get. >> michelle: the regatta takes place at lake las vegas
website, news3lv.com. so we've been showing you how fantastic the weather is going to be this weekend. good thing because we have two big music events happening in one weekend. thousands of people are expected to be here this weekend. they're helping out our economy. also bringing major crowds and traffic. starting tond through sunday our city opens its doors to life is beautiful and we've had more tickets sold this year than ever before for this massive festival since it started. an estimated are expected. festival on track to make a profit for the very first time. there's changes this year too. three-day festival has expanded its footprint. so it's gotten bigger including more of downtown las vegas. which means along with some of the acts jay cole just to name a few, this is a huge weekend for business in downtown las vegas. >> we have so many businesses open up throughout the year.
year. but when life is beautiful happens it highlights all the local businesses that open up. which is great. people are like downtown is really cool. >> michelle: it really is. and gosh they've done so much with the downtown project to change it up and spruce it up. that's the first event that starts today. the other big one is the i heart radio concert. thousands of music lovers are going to head over to the t-mobile arena where they will be listening to artists like 21 ariana grande just to name a few. here's where this is going to affect you. even if you are not going to festival but need to head down in these directions. lots of traffic, lots of road closures this weekend. here's a look at all of the road closures. this map here. so some have gone into affect. i can tell you because i was there this morning. the road closures go as far as 11th street west to las vegas
>> kyndell: in addition to all that we do have another traffic alert to tell you about happening downtown this weekend. n-dot will demolish a bridge over symphony park avenue at i-15. this 180 foot long bridge has been around for 19 years. starting at ten until 5:00 a.m. on monday, symphony park will be closed between mlk and grabbed central parkway. you can get downtown by using alta, bonneville or charleston. n-dot says all weekend. 24e demolition is part of project neon which is widening the 15 between sahara and spaghetti bowl. construction on the new bridge over symphony park avenue will start next month and be done by early next year. a new study suggests a healthy diet may help young children become better readers. researchers in finland looked at the diets over 100, first,
affecting their reading scores. they found skills improved more when their diets included more vegetables, fruit and fish and less red meat and sugar. michelle in addition to a healthy diet, fitness goes hand in hand. >> michelle: sorry. you say fitness and i start to get -- just kidding. i got a bug in my throat. it's so hard because it's a combination of both. but you have to change your lifestyle right. when you are going to exercise and when you are going to eat. so we talked to these fitness professionals here before. we have ryan and we have monica from f-45. this is in summerlin. you are back today for our fit friday segment to show us good stuff. we're talking about burning a whole lot of calories in one hour. you do a lot of what? high intense-- >> high intensity intervalue training. functional workouts as well. so you are going to get a full body workout.
time. most of our classes are only 45 minutes start to finish. from the time you walk in to that class you are out of there in 45 minutes. >> michelle: there's a lot going on too. so are you doing kind of like circuit training almost? or how does it work. >> it's hit workouts mixed with circuit training and also functional movement. so you can see everyone is doing a lot of variety in terms of movement. and exercises are up on the tv screens so you don't have to remember all t exercises. you walk in and 45 minutes later you have had an amazing workout which has been spoon fed you. super easy to follow and keep up with. >> michelle: i think when people, you know, are thinking about working out they think they have to do like an hour on a treadmill and get all the cardio in and they've got to do -- i think a lot of women are scared of weight lifting because they think they're going end up like a body builder which is not the case obviously. >> obviously. and really the nice thing about this is the fact the time.
time to get really amazing workout. it's the variety that we offer. every day is a completely different workout. you don't get worried with what you are doing here. >> michelle: that's the key. not getting bored. you are going to put me to dress in my dress and heels. trying to get more of that. so show me what we have here today. in squats. i requested that. >> no squats. we're going start with frontal lateral raises. this is the easiest. >> you are going to go up to back down. >> michelle: while i do this. >> you are working those shoulders and nice and tone and back on down. feel it as soon as do you that. >> i feel it. how heavy are these. >> three pounds. >> michelle: no they're not. that's a lie. i'm already sweating. i'm pretty sure i am going to have pit stains after this. >> we would actually time you so we have you do as many as cue in

than death valley is laughlin. 80 degree temperatures. las vegas valley low to mid-70s. henderson at 73. the lakes 72. nellis story. i was shooting for 80 for the forecast high today but we're not getting as warm as the models are predicting. i think it's going to be a struggle to reach 80 this afternoon. if you are dining outside for lunch or dinner this evening, you are going to want a sweater with you. we still have a little bit of a breeze. summerlin reporting2 lakes 13-mile-an-hour winds. gusts about 20 miles per hour around the region. low pressure system here you see it spinning. there's the intake. then we've got a couple of showers across the back side near the tonopah area. most of this in the higher terrain. pretty light stuff and it's moving through and fizzling out. here is a look at high temperatures for today. indian springs 76. boulder city also looking at 76 degrees for the high. tonopah today 66.

she's casting quite a spell on others. >> just the minute we met her it was like this girl is something special. we had to come back the next day just because we missed her already. >> reporter: that was the reaction when rockland police found taylor who is battling childhood cancer herself set up a lemonade stand to raise money to buy toys and games for other kids facing cancer treatment. >> the babies get treatment they get a little bit scared. help them. >> reporter: and that brings us to her backyard which today dozens of volunteers worked to transform taylor's backyard as a way to say thank you to a little girl helping others. why a backyard? as it is right now because of taylor's treatment she cannot run barefoot in her own backyard for risk of fungal infection. by replacing the sod back here and redoing all this she'll be able to run in her backyard just like any other kid.

[ laughter ] >> reporter: taylor couldn't stay today to watch because of all the dust. her parents continue to be blown away with everything that's happened since this police officer met this little girl. >> all because of this little girl. how much love she gives to everybody. and she's getting some stuff, some love back because she always gives. >> all these people are now family. we're not just a set of strangers. the stars of the have pulled this together a they're now forever in our life. >> reporter: because this six-year-old girl set up a lemonade stand to help others. in rockland, kcra news. >> michelle: all right. friday also means forever home friday. one of our favorite segments on "news 3 live at noon" and we have holly from the animal foundation. >> i am here with melvin. he is a two-year-old jack russell terrier.
