is set for november 17th. we'll send it over to michelle and our friends at community ambulance. >> michelle: if you have little ones running around or this is good information for anybody. but if you have little kids, it is a little more nerve-racking. it's important to know the basic first aid you know what you need to do. basic first aid for stuff that happens all the time. >> mostly stuff that happens at home. >> michelle: we have melanie bangle here with us from community ambulance today. we've talked about choking, drowning. but let's talk about something that happens pretty much every day in the household and you don't know what you are supposed to do. >> especially with kids. kids get into everything and trip and fall, little bobble heads fall over. they're head heavy when little. if your kids are outside and active they're going to be falling off bikes and getting cuts and scrapes. basic cuts and scrapes definitely wash with soap and water.
slight oozing, put a band-aid on it. if it seems to be bleeding a lot we have gauze pads and a bandage around it. if you are applying pressure and it doesn't stop bleeding after five to ten minutes, call 911. >> michelle: i always wonder, i mean, i guess you kind of know if it is a really deep cut but at what point do you take a kid to the hospital and have stitches put in. >> if it seems pretty deep maybe a 16th of an inch o urgent care and they can get stitchs there. you don't always need an emergency room. they can do x-rays to do see if there's fractures. sutures and stitches. if they -- if you get a sprain or strain and there's any kind of swelling always put ice it on. don't put ice directly on the skin. put an ice pack. you can actually freeze the skin. you can get little first aid
stores. they will have ice packs in them or make your own. put a towel down against their skin and put the ice pack on it for 15 minutes. if it seems swollen and they can't walk definitely take them to urgent care or the e.r. if there's an obvious break or their body part is deformed or the bone is sticking out call 911 at that point. if you try to put it back in place or move a severely broken bone you can cause more damage than goo stuff like that to help on the way to the hospital. >> michelle: let's get to these real quick. talk about the choking thing. we have 30 seconds. >> if you do get a burn run it under cool water for five to ten minutes. don't put it in ice water. that is the bad thing -- worst thing you can do. if they get blisters or anything, take them to urgent care or e.r. to make sure they can get the treatment for it. >> michelle: don't put ice on a burn. >> do not. run it under cool water. you can submerge it in cool
spiders or bugs. if you see the stinger in the skrin scrape it out with your nail or a credit card and put ice on it. if it seems like they're having an allergic reaction, redness of the arm or swelling of the face or lips call 911. if they get bit by a spider try to take it with you if you see the spider. they can determine whether it is a black widow or the recluse ones we have here. ice it first for pain then take them to urgent care or if somebody is choking you can tell because they make that horrible voice and they can't cough or breathe. ask them to cough. in they can cough they can get air in. if they can't cough give them a hug from behind. make a fist and put it right above their belly button and grab with the other hand and pull in and up. trying to push the air out of their lungs. if you can't get it out lay them on the ground and call 911.
