us more southeasterly and will be picking up today. storms this morning will track out of the area and be replaced by more later today... especially toward the evening. but the bigger story is hurricane matthew... it is working through the bahamas right now and still aiming for the east coast of florida later today... and it is a big one... i'll have more on hurricane matthew and our share of weather coming up in a few minutes. our top story this morning is hurricane m.. -- leaving a trail of destruction wherever it goes. at last check, 26 people have died in the carribean -- many of them in haiti. in one town there -- 14 people died -- a bridge there washed away. the largest city in eastern cuba our share of weather coming up

our top story this morning is hurricane matthew... it's on its way to the u-s coast -- leaving a trail of destruction wherever it goes. at last check, 26 people have died in the carribean -- many of them in haiti. in one town there -- 14 people died -- a bridge there washed away. the largest city as in florida -- an evacuation order affecting several beaches. the mayor of jacksonville encouraging people to move further inland... we're talking about public hopefully it's only an inconvenience." he says people who don't evacaute will not be arrested. however -- they will not have access to resources if they stay. evacuation orders also in place in south carolina.

few days -- after being warned to leave "for those of that are you are putting a law enforcement officer or a national guardsman's life on the line when they have to go back and get you." at least half a dozen gas stations along an interstate there are already out of gas. long lines of cars -- as people fuel up for the drive out. a kwwl-follow up this morning... the maximum sentence handed down to a dubuque man following a racially-motivated assault. randy metcalf sentenced to 10 years in federal prison -- after he was found guilty of committing a hate crime. he assaualted a black man outside a dubuque bar. that attack happened in 2015. and hasn't been the only instance of racial tensions in the city recently. in april -- police say they found two crudely constructed items that appeared to be burnt

a fire reported inside a waterloo school. it started in the boys bathroom at cunningham elementary. fire crews say they're investigating whether the fire was an accident, or set on purpose. no one was hurt. authorities say officers shot a man who opened fire on them after a wild chase. police in south carolina say a man tried to run some officers over. the officers then chased after him. authorities say the man later got out of his car -- pulled out a gun -- officers fired back, hitting the man. he was taken to the hospital. his name and condition haven't been released. in utah -- police are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened near salt lake city. authorities say two officers discovered the driver they pulled over had a warrant for his arrest. police say the officers were trying arrest him when his wife started attacking one of the officers. police say the man then ran away when he was shot by one of the

charges against his wife. a boy is recovering after being attacked by a clown. the seven-year- old michigan boy was outside when a man dressed as a clown came up to him and tried to cut him with a knife. the boy rushed home and told his mom --who then called police... he used the other hand to...he dragged the knife down my arm slowly." two women in the area also reported three clowns walking toward t in des moines -- police say they're hearing of threats about clowns. they're turning out to be fake we're wasting a lot of resources investigating these crimes." there's been some reports of clowns here in eastern iowa --but so far -- none that are committing any kind of crimes. 24 years served for a crime he didn't commit. a wisconsin man now free from prison. d-n-a ruled him out as a suspect

washington. here in iowa -- early voting is underway. several counties in eastern iowa are saying there's one mistake many people are making. kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in waterloo to explain. both dubuque and black hawk counties say some people who are mailing in their absentee ballots are missing an important step. they say some people are not signing the back of the return envelope... black hawk county says just yesterday.... they got 30 envelopes in the mail that weren't signed... dubuqe county says on monday...
