tv Eyewitness News at 430 CBS April 8, 2016 4:30am-5:01am EDT
this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. it is parade day in philly. in just a few hours our national champions, villanova wildcats, will be marching down market street. what you need to know if you're going to the parade or just looking to avoid the gridlock. >> but will the weather hold out for the parade? snow coming this weekend, katie times it out. >> amtrak demanding changes right now. we'll tell but them, plus, new details about sunday's deadly crash. >> today is friday, april 8th, good morning, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm brooke thomas. we're getting your day started with a check on weather and traffic with katie and meisha. >> happy friday. serious accident on christopher columbus
boulevard. i'll touch base on that coming up in just a moment. >> thankfully the weather is quieting down for a time. yes, the s word is in this forecast, snow on the horizon for us, eventually we have to take the dose of winter as it comes. but, for now, yes, cooler day by comparison to yesterday, heck of a lot quieter. take you back out to the wide zoom on storm scan3, actually the same system trying to retreat. you can see how it is cleared out at the local zoo. very quickly we check on the winds speeds. that will continue to be running theme from yesterday. the wind, notice, though, it is starting to turn more westerly. yesterday it was much more southerly after winds flow. now, as it turns more westerly, eventually northwesterly, chill will settle in, then comes along the next system tomorrow. here's where we stand temperature wise, if you recall, this same time yesterday, many of you were still sitting in the 50's, well, that is definitely a nice distant memory at this point, 45 at the airport, pair of four's in dover, trenton, so it is colder and again, with the breeze out there, you notice it, especially if you're out in center city
where the skyscrapers essentially act as winds tunnel. so despite the return of some sun for the villanova parade, low to mid 50's, cooler than average by about 10 degrees, and with the breeze it will feel cooler. so i highly suggest you, a, come out to the parade, b, have the appropriate gear ready, sweatshirt, fleece, it will be a cooler day. >> no t-shirt. but always that one in the pack that has the sleeveless, tank top. >> usually 20 something college kid, right? >> they're out there. we'll see it today. good morning, happy friday. we made it to the weekends, now wasn't to switch our attention, already this morning, it is early, yes, but already we have few accidents outside, so i start with this one, very serious one, if you are anywhere around south philly take note of this, where we have serious accident of vehicle that went into a building, this is christopher columbus boulevard, both directions, all lanes are blocked at oregon avenue. so what you will want to do in and around this, stay on broad street, the schuylkill or 95,
that's going to be your best bet right now as they are work to go get this cleared out of the way, again, very serious accident here with a vehicle that went into a building, hearing reports that this could be a fatal accident. we also have an accident on the platt bridge, looks like this might have just went dark, mid-span, all lanes blocked between penrose and highland avenue, no one is getting on the bridge right now, make note that far for those of to you use the platt bridge, i'll let you know as soon as it clears, no one getting on it because of the accident. construction 95 north at girard, dealing with this yesterday, you have lost that right lane, not causing too many slow downs yet, we certainly know it will if it doesn't get moved out of our way, jim, back over to you. >> today is the day that philly honors the national champion villanova wildcats. >> we're just hours away from the parade of champions, through center city. as "eyewitness news" reporter pat gallen joins us live with the last minute preparations, pat, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jim, brooke, yes, here at the end of the parade route, outside of city hall at dilworth plaza, where everything is going to wrap up
little later on today as the team teamed up with the city to throw a big celebration for those villanova wildcats. certainly, they deserve t yesterday some preparation getting ready for. >> this you can see the barriers behind me, barriers up and down market street. these kids, as i said, de is dee it, wildcats will take over, just small piece every center city starting at 1:00. get to see ryan arcidiacono, chris jenkins, entire nova crew. so as we take a look at the parade route itself, it is not very long. it is not a large parade route, not talking philly's 2008 here. the fun begins at 20th and market street, and we'll move down to the west side of city hall where we are standing at dilworth plaza that means little foot traffic in the area as you might imagine, and it will cause some delays, as well, as you try to get in and out of town. i'm sure meisha will be keeping you a breast that far situation throughout the day. you know it gets little crazy down here, outside every city hall anyway, but with the
parade, give yourself little extra time trying to get out of the city if you work down here, i know some of the city employees are getting out as early as noon today. some other city employees we're told to stay little later in the day to avoid the traffic. so that of course is always fun. yesterday i got a chance to talk to ryan arcidiacono. he was getting a fresh haircut yesterday, and he was getting himself ready and prepared for this parade. we had nice little sit-down. few of the players were there, with ryan arcidiacono. you'll hear this entire interview coming up around 6:30 this morning, it feels like tonight out here, 6:30 today, he was awesome. he's just so cool, calm, collected, taking it all in, taking in the new found celebrity. you'll be hearing that come up around 6:30, liver outside of city hall, pat gallen for "eyewitness news", jim, brooke, back into you. >> i can't wait to hear that. >> looking forward it. >> we're kicking off our parade of champions coverage

cbs's charlie rose pressed sanders on those comments last night. >> do you believe secretary clinton is unqualified to be president? >> well, does secretary clinton believe that i am unqualified to be president? >> why can't you simply say yes, she has some of a first rate resume in terms of a -- >> absolutely. >> the pennsylvania primary april 26, new quinnipiac pole has clinton ahead of sanders by six in the state. >> former president, bill clinton, was also in town, rallying support for his wife. clinton spoke at the dolores emanuel recreation center in east mt. airy. things were going as planned until two black lives matter protesters through up signs criticizing clinton's passage of the 1994 crime bill. here's how clinton responded to it. >> okay, i heard it, did i -- can i answer? here is the thing, i like protesters. but the ones that won't let you answer are afraid of the
truth. that's a simple road. >> after philadelphia the former president stopped in scranton. meantime, on the republican side, the candidate are firmly focused on new york. texas senator ted cruz campaigned yesterday in brooklyn, at one of the stops he made maas is a with rabbi's and children, ohio governor john kasich also hit the campaign trail, attract add crowd during a stop at a deli in the bronx. donald trump did not have any public event yesterday, but he announced the restructuring of his campaign with the hiring after convention manager. >> well, today a south philadelphia church celebrates its place in history. >> the mother bethel african methodist episcopal church was incorporated 200 years ago, richard allen found in the church at sixth and lombard. today there is re-enact many of the church's first general conference, with historical perspective. moran verse are you events planned throughout the year. >> well, still ahead.

welcome back on "eyewitness news", with love and romance taken to new heights. >> but, a california man will have to pay up for this cliffhanger. he hiked up moral rock and face time his girlfriends to pro toast to her. sounds greatment then he realized he was stuck, with no way of getting down. a helicopter crew swooped in to bring him to safety. and if you're wouldn't berg his girlfriends' response, she said yes. >> well, that's good. at least that worked out. >> yes, he was rescued and it
all worked out. >> the time is 4:42, meisha is watching the roads this morning. >> very serious accident on christopher columbus boulevard, i'll be talking about that in just a second because you will need an alternate. >> before we get to that katie is here with your forecast. >> thankfully, clearing out at this point, we will see some sunshine, breezy, cooler for the parade today, but at least it is dry. we don't have to worry about umbrellas out on the parade route. it is drying out across the board here. up in the poconos might see residual wrap around snow shower, left over moisture from the system that pushed through yesterday. you can see it pushing through central pa at this point. we have to cope our eye on the radar for, that storm pulling away it, will thankfully leave us alone for the rest of the day. as we move into the weekends, another system, if we zoom it out one more time, which we will do one more time, you can see the beginning of it, trailing in from wisconsin, into northern illinois, will basically just take a little bit after left-hand turn here, and migrate east, and by tomorrow, we end up with the potential for some snow, it
does not look like we would have chance to accumulate much. a lot of limitations on april snowfall. you have got strong april sun ankle em, every day, gets higher, higher, higher. daytime precipitation generally what we are thinking here, so come during the day, tough time sticking and accumulating. temperatures will be in the who's. now, you can have snow when temperatures are above freezing obviously, really what happens is you have got such cold air a -- air aloft it, melts a lot of times on contact, with the warm grounds, yes, a lot of limitation here. so at max, probably talking about a grassy accumulation, if anything at all. most notably, especially through the northern territory, lehigh valley, pocono region, you have a shot at least right now. for now, sunshine, breezy cool day granted at 54 degrees, by tomorrow, that next little disturbance comes in, it will be cold day, make no mistake, but again it is april, there are limitations to how much snow you can get it. looks like there will definitely and lot of limitations tomorrow, meisha. >> oh, snow tomorrow. all right, thanks, katie. good morning, everyone, happy
friday to up, so glad we made it to the weekend. the problem this morning is we do have couple of accident out there, i'm going to tell but this first one, very serious accident, here. so if you are heading to south philly or anywhere around the area, pay close attention here. fatal accident, car went into building here, columbus boulevard, both directions. all lanes are blocked right now, at oregon avenue. as they are trying to get this cleaned out of the way, cleared out of the way, stay on broad street to get to all of the major highways, schuylkill, 95 will be your best bet, stay away from this area right now, and i'll have more report on that coming up in a little bit. doesn't look like they're clearing it up right now. right now looks like trying to move the process forward, but still a process under investigation. accident here, the platt bridge mid-span, all lanes block between penrose and highland, no one is getting on the bridge right now, they are getting off, just not seeing anyone get on. so you will want to use passyunk avenue or 95, to maneuver around. >> this so make note of. that will we have another thing construction coming up in about i would say ten minutes, jim, back over to you.

the bottom of his feet, his lips, but survivability, to get cared for. >> poor thing. firefighters named the little bear smokey, jr., he will be turned over to wildlife officials hopefully he'll be okay. >> oh, little thing. >> meanwhile, still ahead on "eyewitness news" this morning, the cost of netflix is going up. >> oh, my goodness, we will tell when you to expect the increase when we come bac

t last year netflix raised prices, to 9.99 for new customers. existing customers, though, were grandfather erred into the older prices, in may, though, all existing customs, about 17 million in the united state, are getting bumped to those 9.99 prices. brooke, jim? >> jill it, also looks like airlines will be squeezing more passengers into coach. lucky us. >> reporter: that's right. plan to stop airlines from stuffing even more passengers into coach has hit the brakes. the senate rejected amendment to an f.a.a. bill, so it required that the agency said a minimum seat size for airlines also minimum distance between rose. new york senator chuck schumer, he at dollars the amendment, he said airlines had been cutting down leg room and seat winds, basically forced pass inning tears sit like sardines, one time good being short, but still a tight squeeze back there. jim, brooke? >> thank you, good morning. >> the 40th anniversary
edition of the philadelphia gay news goes on sale today. >> founder mark segal unveiled the cover at special party last night.
