>> ♪ >> we begin tonight with breaking news. police are now investigating after they say a man was struck by a vehicle in camden. it happened a little before 8 o'clock on baird boulevard and randolph streets and we're told now the victim was that rushed to the hospital. no word on his condition. police are investigating whether the striking vehicle stayed at the scene. of course stay with "eyewitness news" as we become more aware of what's happening at this very active investigation scene tonight. also now our top story, the death of cuban leader fidel castro. some called him a revolutionary hero, to others he was a ruthless dictator whose death has triggered celebrations now here in the states and around the world. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. fidel castro's body has been cremated. tonight reaction from all across the world is pouring in and we get more now from that cbs correspondenter barnett.

>> reporter: back in 1959 fidel castro predicted cuba would have open elections. u.s. backed dictator was overthrown. but instead cuba has had more than five decades of communist rule and crack downs on dissidents. following his death president obama released this statement. the relationship between the united states and cuba was marked by discord and profound political disagreements. during my presidency we have washed hard to put the past behind us. mr. obama's easing of travel restrictions and reestablishment of diplomatic ties was done through executive order which the next president could reverse. >> the people of cuba get nothing. >> reporter: canada trump criticized the president's action. today president-elect trump said his administration will do all it can to ensure the cuban people can finally begin

their journey toward prosperity and liberty. it's been just over a year since the cuban flag began flying once again outside the cuban embassy here in washington. diplomats will be listening close to president-elect's words to see where the relationship between the the u.s. and cuba goes from here. mr. trump says he joins cuban america in the hopes of one day being a free cuba. erroll barnett cbs news washington. >> as news of fidel castro's death spread, people started celebrating and filling the streets in miami's little havana neighborhood. the neighborhood is a cultural epicenter for cuban americans. >> i was a small mild child and i'm here, very thankful to be here. this is my country and i'm hopeful, i'm very hopeful for cuba. >> well, crowds are continuing to party well into the night as multiple generations of family members all celebrate together.

many here share similar stories of castro's decades of oppression. and castro's impact has been felt over the years in our own region as well causing decades of heart eighth cleve bryan joins us from the cbs3 sat center with more on castro's local impact. cleve. >> natasha some people say violence and injustice are castro's legacy and that stretched to the philadelphia region. >> for much of the folks in the cuban community it's a lot like the death of osama bin laden. >> reporter: former philadelphia deputy mayor rich negron >> negotiates the release of 3,000 political prisoners. because of that he was targeted by a radical terrorist group wasn't killed. >> reporter: negrin's story is similar.

joanne chesimard who killed a new jersey state trooper then fled to cuba in 1979 after escaping prison. castro granted her asylum. saturday new jersey state police released a statement saying we will never sees pursuing joanne chesimard who was convicted of murdering new jersey state trooper westerner forrester. >> too many families have been torn apart. too many killed and imprisoned. >> reporter: new jersey senator bob menendez a cuban american has been a leading critic of president obama's effort to restore ties with cuba over the last few years. he says even with castro's death the u.s. must demand civil rights for the people of cuba. >> instead of condoning the continuation avenue repressiv. >> ve assembly because it's been around long enough the united states and the international community must stand up and support the cuban people. >> reporter: new jersey governor chris christie has called on cuba to hand

overclears marred to strengthen diplomatic relations. cleve bryan cbs3 news. >> returning to our weather tonight it's a bit chilly tonight but we're going to enjoy some sunshine tomorrow at least. meteorologist lauren casey is in the cbs3 weather center with her sunny sunday morning forecast. make sure high that -- there i said that slowly. >> a lot of alliteration. sunny sunday is coming for tomorrow and so far this thanksgiving weekend we have been seasonable. another s for you. also the trend has been for clouds kind of hanging on but over the last couple hours storm scan3 showing that you say cloud break starting to break down save for a few flurries across portion of the poconos and lehigh valley. it is chillier evening especially with these clearing skies than we had 24 hours ago. numbers down on the order of five, 10, even 18 degrees cooler across parts of the delaware valley than this time yesterday evening. we're already back at

32 degrees in millville. cape may county still up at 35 frees. we have that northwesterly breeze around five to 10 miles per hour adding a bit of a wind chill impact and we will have a brisk sunday in store but final some sunshine returns. we'll talk about the all pornography of important eagles forecast for monday evening and some much needed rainfall a-midweek soaker and i'll have all that coming up. >> lauren thank you. shoppers who had some money left over from black friday hit up some mom and pop shops today for small business saturday. hundreds of folks flooded haddonfield new jersey. american express created this promotion back in 2010 as an answer to black friday. many small business owners say seeing a bevy of shoppers today is a good gauge for the rest of the holiday season. if people are making a point come and support your business that means you're getting something right, you're doing something right.

so, it's kind of a sign that things are going well and it boosts your energy for the rest of the season. >> all business owners here say small business saturday is not only profitable but it also introduces new visitors to their area. and mayor jim kenney supported local businesses today as well. he was shopping in manayunk. the mayor picked up some new music at main street music. the mayor says shopping locally really helps top build the economy. >> jobs are created by small business. that's why we love business trips like this and we love improving the ones need to be improved and also supporting our immigrant communities because they tend to start businesses. the myth that immigrants are somehow taking resources out of the system is wrong. they're putting resources in the system starting businesses and employing people. >> well, the mayor then went on to buy some lucky boys or girls gifts from spectrum scientifics. the green party has now initiated a recount of the presidential election results in wisconsin and it's also eyeing several other states as

well including pennsylvania. now the group has a new supporter, hillary clinton. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has the details now from today's announcement. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: hillary clinton's campaign team announced saturday it will parts 98 a recount of the presidential election results in wisconsin. green party candidate jill stein is calling for recounts in several states that helped donald trump win the white house. her party has raised almost $6 million and filed paperwork friday for a recounts in wisconsin. >> we do not take money from corporations or from political pacs. this comes from the american public. >> reporter: clinton's campaign attorney posted a blog that says now that a recount has been initiated in wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides. if jill stein follows through as she has promised and pursues recounts in pennsylvania and michigan, we will take the same approach in those states as well.

the president-elect called the recount ridiculous saying in a statement this is a scam by the green party tore for an election that has already been conceded and the results of this election should be respected instead of being challenged and abused which is exactly what jill stein is doing. clinton's team says it has not found any evidence of hacking or tampering with election technology and there it was not planning to launch its own respect count but now that it's happening the campaign says it wants to ensure it's legally represented in the process. wendy gel let for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> stay with us. still ahead tonight the surprising reason fewer people are getting divorced these days. plus, drink to your health. why some researchers say nondrinkers may want to change their habit a bit. also, it's beginning to look a lot like christmas in center city philadelphia. we're going to take you to tonight's tree lighting celebration. and straight ahead in sports, a busy day in college football as penn state looks for their eighth straight win

>> welcome back. now back on "eyewitness news" police say a man who barricaded himself insides his roxborough home for hours died from a self-inflicted gunshot wounds. this tense moment unfolded about 5 o'clock this morning along river road. officers responded to the scene for shots fired. police and s.w.a.t. team members then surrounded his home as the man barricaded himself inside firing off several shots. there were no other injuries. cherry hill police say a driver going the wrong way hit a police cruiser head on early this morning. police say it happened about 2 o'clock on route 70 near kingston drive. investigators tell us the woman was traveling east in the westbound lanes. both the officer and the driver were treated at the hospital for their injuries. the woman was charged with driving while intoxicated and is also facing additional charges as well. there is new research meantime it shows that drinking alcohol can actually

reduce the risk of stroke but there is a catch here. the study published in bnc medicine found in people who had one or two drinks a day actually cut their risk by 8 percent. but here's the catch. people who drank more than four alcoholic beverages a day increased their risk by 14 percent. the study actually suggests nondrinkers take up drinking as a health measure. and together forever. it seems divorce rates in the u.s. have plunged now to a 35 year low. the national center for family and marriage says many factors are in play here including the aging of the u.s. population. changing gender roles and the fact that not many people are actually getting married these days, those are other factors. there are only 32 marriages for everyone thousand unmarried women ages 15 or older. now, a sign of the season tonight. it's at philadelphia city hall. it's beautiful. take a look.

[cheers and applause] >> "eyewitness news" was there as the flip was switched on philadelphia's 40-foot tall colorado fir lighting up the tree for the holiday season. looks beautiful. this year the tree sits on a new base, it's showcasing iconic philadelphia landmarks. and it certainly at a miracle on south 13th street in south philadelphia for more than a dozen years or so, residents here have outfitted their homes in spirited holiday decor that attracts tourists nationwide. this year the homes are going pretty high tech. samsung has outfitted the homes with gadgets that will help power the lights with smartphones. very interesting. and northeastern pennsylvania ski resorts are hoping for a much better year after a pretty dismal season last winter and skiers as one mountain getting an early start on things. blakesly big boulder is opened for business this week and skiers making their way down the slopes today having a good time out there. they will be closed again

during this week as they make more snow. many of the other pocono resorts are eyeing up an early december opening as well. we hope they do well this year. >> yeah, absolutely. >> always fun to see folks skiing. of course me looking at it from afar. >> oh, yes, winter is coming, the season of sports that i cannot do. >> exactly is. let's get back to summer. but no i love winter the holiday season and feeling a lot more like the holiday season colder. >> definitely s for ladies like us we can sit back by the camp fire let everyone ski, enjoy the chilly conditions. we got a plan. >> i like that plan. >> hot chocolate for all. >> temperatures are a little bit chilly. 40 degrees right now as we get a live look at center city philadelphia. got that west wind only around 6 miles per hour but having a big impact on that feels-like temperature. feeling more like 36 and finally those low clouds have cleared out. we'll see clear sky conditions overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow actual sunshine. storm scan3 showing us that cloud deck has decreased in many areas, still holding on

to some clouds up in the lehigh valley or the poconos. seeing lake effect snow off to the north and west right there. the snow showers moving into parts of western new york and western pennsylvania but those will leave us alone. temperatures right now are chilly. 37 degrees in allentown, we're at 39 in trenton, down already to the freezing mark in millville and we do have those wind speeds kind of variable but up around 12 miles per hour in wilmington. when that wind picks up it is having an impact on that feels-like temperature feeling like 33 in wilmington, feeling like 20's in the poconos and feeling like 26 degrees in millville. forecast lows overnight tonight dropping down into the 20's and 30's across much of the area. the one mild spot will be wildwood only falling back to 40 degrees and in the city we fall back to 38, partly cloudy conditions with that chilly breeze out of the northwest up around 10 miles per hour. and for our day tomorrow i know we saw a little bit of sunshine at times across the area today. tomorrow it's sunshine for everyone all throughout the day. brisk conditions, high temperatures running just a few degrees below average, 49 but with winds gusting up

around 20, 25 miles per hour tomorrow afternoon, it will feel a little bit chill ill and it will also feel a little bit chilly if you're heading out to the eagles taking on the packers at the linc monday evening, 46 degrees, dry conditions so we will start to see the cloud deck increasing monday evening in advance two of weather systems that are going to bring us two big helpings of much needed rainfall. this is tuesday then again into wednesday and the first half of thursday periods of rain, some heavy at times. i think we could even see a few embedded thunderstorms possibly producing some gusty winds. rain potential one to three maybe even more locally and we desperately do need that rainfall. next week we could see more rainfall from these two systems than we've seen about in the last two months in philadelphia. future weather showing us quiet conditions all throughout our sunday heading back to work i know after the long holiday weekends but no problems on the roads weather-wise. we go throughout monday cloud deck does start to increase by the evening hours, staying dry. tuesday morning looks okay for

most of us. by lunchtime that widespread area of rain overtaking the delaware valley. some of that heavier rainfall and then as we head into our tuesday evening commute that rain will still be lingering around making for a slow go and rainfall amounts some of our model projections, some of our main modelsly in philadelphia giving us about 2-inches very consistent there so we have a pretty high level of confidence that we'll see some significant rainfall totals as we head into midweek next week but no rain in the forecast tomorrow across the region. partly sunny in the poconos, mostly sunny down the shore with a high temperature at 49 degrees. all is quiet on monday before that rain arrives on tuesday breezy conditions as well, so more of a rain shirk as opposed to umbrella day on tuesday. extremely mild on wednesday, 66 degrees. that's the last day of november so good thing we got some warm air coming in with this system or it could be a much different story. >> oh, yeah, you're right about that. we don't want there. >> thank you lauren. appreciate it. at least it will be dry for the eagles game. >> yeah. >> we have some updates with two key birds that are not

>> big day in college football. temple owls played east carolina at the linc and the victory would give them the ace east conference crown. it was senior right. walker in his final home game. first quarter temple trailing. into the end zone for the 3-yard score. that's going to tie up the game. second quarter owls leading. other temple running back jahad thomas fights his way into the ends zone. temple will take a 21 to seven lead. owls ran for 256 yards and beat east carolina 37-10 and yes, will play for the conference championship for the second straight year. >> it's hard to repeat. we know everyone is kind of aiming at you. while i would love to go

undefeated in the conference, seven and one in both years that shows that our players got better because you do seven and 11 year and all of a sudden you sneak up on people they kind of know what you can do and for them to do what they did this year i think is outstanding. >> great season for penn state. after a slow start they've won seven straight going into today's game against michigan state. nittany lions to could go to the big 10 championship way win but they needed michigan to lose to ohio state. michigan with a three points lead in overtime. ohio state's samuel finds the ends zone. that is the winning touchdown for ohio state. 30-27 the final. the nittany lions still had to beat the spartans. third quarter penn state down mcsorley looks deep. chris godwin opened down the side line goes in for the score. penn state up 17 to 12. mcsorely avoids the rush gets up throws the ball, and

he's able to come down with it. it's 24-12. still in the third mcsorely godwin will hook up again this time a 59-yard touchdown. penn state heading to the big 10 championship game with a 45-12 victory. they will play wisconsin. >> just really proud of our kids. i'm happy for this community it. i'm thankful for all the letter men that new in from all over the country support us. >> reporter: you just said you're happy for this communities. how would you describe what it is feels like to bring some happy back to happy valley. >> well, if i ever left my officers i could experience some of it but we'll have plenty of time for that in the off season. >> villanova playing saint francis. handoff to aaron ford who goes into the ends zone. cats with the lead. later zach bednarczyk rolls able to find eric mcclinton who made that catch. villanova with a 31-21 win. they'll play south dakota state next week. now to the birds running

back ryan mathews and big d the rookie offensive lineman will not be playing monday night against the packers both have that sprained mcl's. doug pederson has not decided if nelson agholor will play monday. nelson says he'll respect any decision doug makes but he would like to play. after sunday's loss to seattle the former number one pick says the pressure of being in the league was getting to him. he just couldn't get out of his own head. doug was asked what he needed to see from nelson to let him play. >> i'm convinced on what he does this week. i know where he's at and it's more or less i want to get through these next couple of days of practice. there's always things that come up. we had tray burton in past on a friday -- anything is possible so i just want to make sure that we're a hundred percent healthy going into this game. >> game on monday night but we'll get you ready tomorrow at 11:30 on sunday kickoff. join me don bell pat gallen right here on cbs3. getting everyone ready.
