caught that pass in his helmet? that was awesome. full highlights of a couple great conference championship games just ahead. speaking of tight competitions, the race was shaken on saturday by newt gingrich's double digit win over mitt romney in south carolina. the question is how does romney stop the bleeding beginning in tonight's nbc debate. we'll have a preview. and penn state head football coach has died just a couple of months after his sexual abuse scandal erupted in the school where he coached for half a century. how do we now consider the legacy of one of the game's all-time greats. it's "way too early" for this. >> good morning, this is "way too early" the show that's not going to lie. we're still a little bit enthused in the giant's party last night. i'm glad you're up with us this morning. we're listening live on sirius radio.

on its head, the republican presidential candidates have moved to florida. with another show down just hours away. early in the sunshine state already underway with over 197,000 republican voters expected to vote before the state's january 31st primary. romney hoping many of those votes were cast. that lead expected to close dramatically after what happened in the weekend in south carolina. former speaker gingrich topped republican contenders with 40% support in south carolina. mitt romney has 28%, 12 points behind gingrich. rick santorum and ron paul following at 17 and 13% respectively. exit pauling poking some big holes in romney's electability. winning the general election was the main factor in their choice. among those voters, 51% said newt gingrich was the most

electable with 37% choosing romney. the conservative vote was critical to gingrich, as well. 48% who call themselves conservative put their support behind gingrich while romney received just 19% of that vote. race now dramatically reshaped. the former massachusetts governor is wasting no time going after gingrich, reminding floridaians of the speaker's past. >> speaker gingrich has been a leader. he was a leader for four years as speaker of the house. and, at the end of four years, it was proven that he was a failed leader. and he had to resign in disgrace. his fellow republicans, 88% of his republicans voted to reprimand speaker gingrich. he has not had a record of successful leadership. >> new jersey governor took aim at gingrich yesterday questioning whether he's really the right man to lead the republican party. >> we don't need another

legislature in the oval office. we need an executive. someone in the private sector and the governor understands how to bring people together. the speaker simply doesn't have that experience. i think newt gingrich has embarrassed the party over time. whether he'll do it again in the future, i don't know. but governor romney never has. he was run out of the speaker ship. he was fined $300,000 for ethics violations. this is a guy who's had a very difficult political career. and it has been an embarrassment to the party. you remember these times. you were here. so the fact of the matter is i don't need to regale the country with that entire list again, except to say this. i'm not saying he will do it again in the future. >> governor christy on meet the press yesterday. following newt gingrich who was with david greg ri. gingrich insisting he's not surprised by the line of attack against him. he says it only reflects the threat posed by an outside candidate. that's what he calls himself, intent on shaking up business as usual in washington.

>> well, the establishment is right to be worried about a gingrich nomination. the gingrich nomination mean that is we're going to change things. we're going to make the establishment very uncomfortable. we're going to demand real change in washington, real audit of the federal reserve, real audit of where hundreds of thousands of billions of dollars has gone. he has no commitment to them, no investment in them. and i think they should be worried because we intend to change the establishment, not get along with it. so i'm happy to be in the tradition of ronald reagan as the outsider who scares the republican establishment. frankly, after the mess they've made of things, maybe they should be shaken up pretty badly. one of the things the florida voters get to decide is do you want the establishment's candidate? governor romney? or do you want somebody who stands for a conservative pop ewe list approach? and that's newt gingrich. >> after a week of tortured responses at the debates as to whether or not he will release his tax returns, mitt romney finally now addressing the issue

head on. >> i will release my tax returns for 2010, which is the last returns that were completed. i'll do that on tuesday of this week. i'll also release at the same time and estimate for 2011 tax returns. so you'll have two years. people can take a good look at it. we'll put it on the web site and you can go through the pages. i think we just made a mistake in holding off as long as we did. it was a distraction. we want to get back to the real issues of the campaign, leadership, character, a vision for america, how to get jobs again in america and how to ring in the excessive scale of the federal government. >> romney saying he's going to release some of his tax returns on tuesday, that, incidentally, the same day as president obama's state of the union address. again, you can see all the candidates on stage tonight, 9:00 eastern, 8:00 central. brian williams moderates the debate from tampa, florida. >> gabrielgiffords to

concentrate on her recovery from last year's assassination atemplt. the three-term democrat nearly died in january of last year when a gunman went on a rampage where he killed six people and wounded another 13. since then, giffords has made remarkable progress, relearning to speak and to walk at rehab centers in arizona and houston. in an online video, congresswoman giffords explained her decision to step aside while hinting at a potential comeback in the future. >> thank you for your prayers. and for giving me time to recover. i have more work to do on my recovery. so to do what is best for arizona, i will step down this week. i'm getting better.

scandal hit penn state university and ultimately cost paterno his job. he led the lions to 409 wins and two national championships. after 46 seasons, his legendary career was shattered last november by allegations that a former trusted asis tant, jerry sandusky molested 10 boys. some of the incidented happened inside the locker room. although paterno reported the alleged abuse, he never went to the police nor did he follow up to make sure the boys were protected. sandusky issued a brief statement reading in part nobody will be able to take away the memories that we all shared of a great man, his family and all the wonderful people that were part of his life. he maintained a high standard. joe preached toughness, hard work and clean competition, most importantly, he had the courage to practice what he preached.

a beautiful live picture of the plaza where they're still dancing after last night's game. let's get a check of the weather. bill, you get to dance with balmy weather. >> yeah, it's going to be warm in a lot of places. we had 12 overnight. it appears we had some damage over arkansas. in the last two hours, it looks like a pretty significant tornado has moved through the birmingham area. and eventually towards gadson. . the worst of the severe storms have already occurred over the next couple hours. eventually, that storm system will bring rain. it's going to be very warm. a lot of the snow that fell saturday will be gone by the end of today. temperatures in the 50s. if you were watching that giants

san francisco game, you saw all the rain in california that continues today and also in arizona. the big storm this morning, tornadoes. here we are in january. >> we'll keep a close eye on those. bill, thanks so much. we appreciate it. front page of the new york stab tabs this morning, they say one thing, new york post, super. new york daily news super with a shot of ely manning. football sets up a rematch. one of the best super bowls ever played. in the first kwaurter, niners jump out to an early lead, alex smith, tight end. davis, who is great, down the sideline. 73 yards for the touchdown. they reviewed it. looked like he might have stepped out of bounds, but they let it stand. start of the second quarter, giants respond. victor cruz makes a nice back pedaling catch. 142 yards, that sets up this, an easy pass to tight end. six yards out, giants take a

three-point lead going into halftime. the third, alex smith. davis works the safety. second touch down of the game, niners take a 14-10 lead. it was a costly mistake on a giant's punt. kyle williams let the ball bounce passed him. giant's defenders picked it up saying it touched his leg. new york challenges, though, the replay does show the ball glances off the right knee. so it is giant's ball. ely finds mario. giants take a three-point lead. san francisco evened it up with a field goal. at the end of the fourth quarter, we're tied at 17 a piece. kyle williams fields it and promptly coughs up the ball, handing this thing over to the giants. nice play by williams.

nice recovery by devon thomas who recovered the other fumble. that sets up a chip shot. 31 yards for lawrence. giants win it on the road, 20-17. their first nfc championship since 2007. they are back in the super bowl. ely, another good game, but it was really a story of two great defenses, one just out lasting the other and a couple mistakes by the niners on special teams that pushed the giants into the super bowl. so that brings us to yesterday's early game. the patriots hosting the ravens in foxborugh. before the game, steven tyler singing the national anthem. ♪ and the rocket's red glare ♪ as bombs bursting in air ♪ gave proof through the night

from more points on the board. an easy attempt to tie the game. >> 32 yards to tie. and the kick is out. it's out. it's no good. it's no good. >> oh, you've got to feel for the ravens on that. stunned disbelief on the sideline after the ravens had driven all the way down to set up that field goal and he just pulled it left. the patriots and tom brady escape with a 23-20 win. brady wins his 16th career post-season win to tie joe montana. new england moves on now to earn that rematch against the giants in the super bowl coming up two weeks. the patriots three and a half point favorites. coming up at the top of the hour, a shake up in south carolina, mitt romney tries to get his feet back under him,

the exit polls show the economy was the top issue for 63% of voters. the candidates now battle for florida, jobs and the housing market will be at the center of conversation. tell your friends florida has a 9.9% unemployment rate and the state ranked 7th nationwide in the number of foreclosures. only two other states, nevada and arizona have a higher percentage of homes with upside down mortgages. let's huddle around the water cooler to dig a little deeper. loss in all the fuss about newt gingrich's 12 point pasting of mitt romney was a performance of that cain team. so how did they do? well, put it this way. they did pretty well. here are the numbers. together, herman cain got 6,324 votes. if you remember, steven colbert was on insisting people vote for herman cain.

a vote for cain was a vote for colbert. and they got more votes together than rick perry, john huntsman and michelle bachmann all combined. next story comes from the great state of ill now. a man was building a shed at his home last week when his nail gun misfired. he thought nothing of it, actually, until he woke up the next day with a pretty bad headache. checked himself into the hospital. here's what the doctors saw on the x-ray. he'd shot himself in the head by mistake with a nail. it was lodged in his brain. he didn't notice. he went to bed that night, woke up the next day in a little pain. as soon as they found it, doctors had him rush to another hospital for emergency surgery. it keeps getting better. during that trip, dante naturally posted that x-ray to facebook on his way over there. the surgery was successful. dante is fine. how do you not know you have a
