Sharh
Fiqh as-Sunnah Kitâb at-Tahârah #75
How
to perform Tayammum
Is it obligatory to strike twice: once for the
face and once for the hands to the elbows (As is the opinion of the Ahnâf,
an opinion of the Mâlikiyyah and the Shâfi’iyyah)?
Or is it one strike for the hands and the face (As is
the main Hanbalî opinion and the stronger of the two narrations from the
Hanâbilah)?
Or is it one strike for wiping up to the wrists,
which is obligatory and one
strike and wiping up to the elbow which is Sunnah. (As is the main
opinion of the Mâlikiyyah and Al-Qâdhî Abû Ya’lâ from the Hanâbilah)?
Or are the hands wiped to the arm pits (As is
the opinion of Az-Zuhrî)?
Or is it is two strikes; the face, arms and
elbows are wiped with each (As is the opinion of Ibn Abî Laylâ and Al-Hasan
Ibn Hay)?
Or is it is two strikes; one for the face and one
for the hands to the wrists (As is one of the two opinions of Al-Awzâ’î and
an opinion in the Hanbalî Math’hab)?
Does every part of the face and hands need to be
wiped?
Must every part be wiped (As is
the opinion of the four Mathâhib)?
Or is it
is not necessary, as long as most is wiped (As is the narration of
Al-Hasan from Abû Hanîfah, and the opinion of Ibn Maslamah from the Mâlikiyyah and Ibn Hazm)?
