america this morning. . breaking news is unfolding in the middle east, a passenger plane has been hijacked just landed on the island of cyprus. new video just coming in. good morning i'm lori stokes. that egypt air flight took off in alexandria headed to cairo when it was hijacked. it landed in cyprus. officials believe there may be a bomb on board.

video of the plane, abc news reporting there was one hijacker a national who was reportedly wearing an explosive belt. learning that most of the 55passengers released and the only hostages remaining is the crew, that 8 u.s. citizens on board, the hijacker demanding political asylum. we'll turn to the local weather and dealing with really strong winds this morning. let's turn to bill evans in your acuweather forecast. thank you for joining us. look at our camera here, bouncing around in this wind that is out of the northwest. not the coldest wind and of course temperatures at 45

mid-30s in a lot of spots. 15, 25 miles per hour wind, temperatures in the low to mid-40s. look at that wind flow out of the northwest, here are the wind speeds so far, 28 in la guardia, 23jfk, this is the sustained winds you see right now. we have these gusts that have been around 46, 47 around jfk, we'll be looking at that wind with us all day long, wind advisory is in effect throughout the day today, so we're looking at sunshine, you'll need your sunglasses. wind speeds that are near tropical storm force. those powerful winds power lines across our area, eyewitness news reporter is live in yonkers with a look at the damage. how is it out there. good morning bill. we are really feeling the effects of the wind you were talking about out here this morning caused scattered power outages throughout the tri- state area reeking havoc in

the road is closed because this tree came down some time during the over night hours uprooting the sidewalk and crushing the car parked next to it, also causing outages to homes on the streets here this morning. they are not alone here in west chester and long island they are dealing with a similar situation, scattered throughout the island just under 1,000 outages in suffolk and nassau counties, and brentwood. and a tree came down on a house, deer park, down on power lines and cars and in new jersey a tree hit the roof of a complex while a woman was inside she heard a loud boom and went outside to find a small fire. i'm freaking out, i don't know. i just don't want to go through that's my bathroom window, i'm afraid it is going to go

people are waking up to find situations in the area, connecticuit dealing with the most outages crews try to restore power. that's the latest, back to you. thank you. let's get our first look at the morning commute. lori and michelle, i have to tell you about this problem, in east rutherford, it is an accident involving a tractor trailer and a car, a debris spill also involved all traffic being diverted on union avenue one service there is no service between 96 street, that's until 5 a.m. new jersey transit long island railroad metro north running on or close to schedule if you are going to the airport to catch a flight contact your carrier at our local area airports we are also finding a problem on the grand central near jewel avenue

you can see that delay as you come up into jewel avenue with that accident cleared. george washington bridge down to 35 miles per hour, an empty trailer band is in effect. we have our street cleaning rules in effect, michelle to you. thank you so much. a wind-driven fire burns through at least two homes in queens several firefighters have been hurt. our eyewitness news reporter is live in east elmhurst. >> reporter: good morning michelle. those were minor injuries for those six firefighters who battled the three alarm blaze in queens, they actually just packed up and wrapped up. there are two houses the one you are looking at head on that's where the fire is believed to have started in the rear of the home. this is a rental property. to the left of that two homeowners live in that property, we do have video when this fire started around 2:00 this morning. you can see those heavy flames shooting out of the back of the

smelling the smoke waking them up instantly running outside. according to the fdny, there were some water repairing with propane tanks in the back. those will be things considered in this fire investigation. now the home where this fire started there were 7 people who live here, four upstairs, three downstairs and again the twohomeowners live next door and talk about what woke them up and got them out safely. >> i was sleeping and someone banged and i came running out and saw the fire taking off. by the time i came out you could see the fire just kind of swallow up the whole garage and the wind was blowing it really hard. took us from now to get the fire under control. thankfully no civilian injuries. everyone was taken buildings. so again firefighters have

that woke up everyone in this elmhurst neighborhood and everyone got out safely. the cause of the fire again will be under investigation. reporting live here in east elmhurst, channel 7 eyewitness news. in brooklyn a woman is in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest during a williamsburg apartment building this started before 11:00 at a 6 story building on metropolitan avenue two people were taken to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalelation, saying the fire spread quickly. >> my son open the door and my son says mommy i a fire. so you know we started getting something to put on and then by the time we open the door again, i mean the smoke was so bad we couldn't see anything, i couldn't even breathe. in addition to the three people who were hurt investigators say a dog was killed. the cause of the fire has not been determined. a woman had to be rushed to the hospital after witnesses say she was rundown by another

jersey city who did it on purpose apparently. happened near union street and mlk drive. hit the victim and knocked down a light post before slamming into the wall. police say the woman driver and woman she hit had been physically fighting moments before the injured woman is in critical condition with two broken legs and extensive internal injuries. the driver was also hospitalized. >> deliberate, the car jumped while she was under, drug her from there to there. >> my reaction was why? why did that prompt you to run her over with a vehicle? like why would you get inside a car when you have time to think about it why would you do that? like that was premeditated. the injured woman is in critical condition with broken legs and other injuries a driver who has not been charged is in the hospital as well. 4:38.

face charges after his 11-year- old grandson took a loaded gun to school. charged with criminal possession of a weapon and wreckless endangerment. the boy showed up in south jamaica with a handgun he found between sofa cushions. he had gotten into a fight the day before and returned with a weapon. he faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. the push is on in new jersey to have all schools tested for possible led contamination in the water. state lawmakers are posed a measure which will commit $3 million for testing another 20 million to replace water filters the news came day as the city of newark held an education forum where parents received an update to test all of its students. the mayor says the proposed law is a good first step. >> it gives the schools the opportunity to get tested the get the money to get tested,

. panic on capitol hill when security guards open fire on a man who pulled out a gun and a visitor center. this happened at the security checkpoint where tourists were fined up. terrified guests, many of them children streamed out of the building afterwards. suspect larry dawson of tennessee is known to capitol hill police. last october he was arrested for disrupting house proceedings yelling that he was quote a prophet of god. he is in critical condition but stable. a postal worker calling for a group of new york city police officers to be disciplined after they arrested him as he worked his route. part of the stop was caught on video. police arrested glen march 17th as he delivered mail on president street. the officers unmarked car

egypt where a passenger plane is hijacked the passenger plane from alexandria to cairo was hijacked and flown to cyprus. he is an egyptian national demanding asylum, may be wearing an explosive vest and belt. we are learning most of the passengers were released as of now. the crew and only 4 passengers described as foreigners remain hostage. the president of cyprus said terrorism has been ruled out and that the hijacker may be a quote love sick man bent on reuniting with his former wife. stay with eyewitness news for updates. developments right now a huge fire ripped through two homes this morning. we are live with the latest on the injuries, dar ra. >> lori, there were six

injuries in this three alarm fire, really massive the good news is that the fdny was able to knock it down quickly despite the high winds, what you're looking at right now was the home that sustained the most damage of the homes that were damaged in this fire you see the residents one is a rental property. 7 people in there and they appear to be salvaging what they can, we saw them bring out a cat 30 minutes ago. people in the house just getting what they can out while they try to regroup at this hour. i want to show you what the flames look like when the fire broke out at 2:00 the part of the damage is the rear of the home. it appears to have spread to a home next door owned by the same person you have a couple who owns the home and a rental property next door. the fdny says there were water repairs going on in the rear of the home that really set fire, and that's going to be part of the investigation but the people who live behind it and

fire and flames were shooting passed the telephone polls. >> ewoke up to wash my face and smelled the smoke, woke up my girlfriend and her son and we just ran out of the house. and i looked in the back and i high. >> look on the window, see the house is on fire. so quickly, 7 minutes and everything was on fire for the cops the house was already on fire. what you're looking at is the salvage process the 9 people who live in these two homes combine trying to get what they can out of the home, the good news is none of them were hurt even though firefighters believe that the fire may have begun in the rear of the home the cause is still under investigation. reporting live in eastelmhurst. channel 7.

weather, the strong winds that we are dealing with right now have ripped down trees and power lines, our eyewitness news reporter is live in yonkers with a look at the damage. >> reporter: we are certainly feeling the effects of this windy weather out here this morning and this situation here in yonkers is a lot like what people across the tristate are waking up to with high winds over night that continue we're on reymond place with a tree has come down on power lines crushing a car underneath and uprooting the sidewalk throughout west chester this morning, we are seeing situations much like this one in mount vernon tree branches came down on a line of parks cars near west fourth street but they are not alone this spans through connecticuit and long island deer park and suffolk county, police were on the scene at west fifth street and oakland avenue, thousands have been left without power this morning they are about

between nassau and suffolk counties here in west chester a little more than 2,000 people are without power, they are waiting for crews to come out here to yonkers where they need to take down this tree and then they can start restoring the power lines for now reymond place is closed, many are awaiting all of that to happen to turn the powerback on but it has been a very windy morning. we're live in yonkers, channel 7 eyewitness news. thank you. and in brooklyn a wind blew over a construction fence on eighth avenue and sunset park a woman on the sidewalk was hit by the flying fence. taking her to the hospital, she is in stable condition. police are searching for a suspect in an alleged sexual assault. these are images of the man they'd like to speak with. he is a person believed to have sexually assaulted a transgender woman in the bathroom of the landmark bar late saturday night. police say the suspect

. new this morning the suspect in last week's deadly tripping shooting shot by u.s. marshals. about 40-miles west of the new jersey border, authorities found him in his car and shot him several times, he is recovering in the hospital. moralas is wanted in the murders of anthony and adel rivera. saying he killed him in dispute over a car. another man also was wounded in that same shooting. 5:13. caught on camera a teacher completely looses his cool apparently over a box of missing rubber bands. >> this is video of a substitute teacher at a northern california middle school, screaming at a classroom of 6 graders about the rubber band. he even told a student to go

the head of the local school board says that teacher needs to consider another line of work. i don't know where he got trained. he should have a good hard look at the training he got to be dealing with children. police were notified no word whether any charges were filed against the teacher. bill evans joins us now with the accuweather forecast. let's take a look outside this morning because we have ourselves a clear to partly cloudy sky, there is the george washington bridge, good visibility too, you can see across the river here and on eastward along i-95, 45 degrees dry humidity, pressure rising a little bit 29, the pressure is below 30.00. high pressure coming in is the reason why the barometer is rising yesterday's high was 62 normal is 54.
