public works crews are preparing. jen lewis is watching the roads for trouble spots this morning, and she'll be back this evening for what could be a very messy commute. and meteorologist jeremy wheeler is tracking the latest snow totals and the timeline for when the snow will start and stop. we have a lot to get to with this coming snow today. thanks for joining us, i'm brandi cummings, in for katie collett. and i'm don roberts. many are dismissing students early, or closing all together. this list is scrolling at the bottom of the screen, but you can also find it on wavy- dot-com. now let's get a closer look at the timeline for today's snow event with meteorologist jeremy wheeler. ("jeremy ad libs wx headlines") today: mostly cloudy. snow developing by midday. accumulations are likely. highs will be in the low 30s. winds var. 5-10mph. tonight: snow showers end this evening. then clearing and cold. lows will be in the low 20s with a few teens inland. winds nw 10-20mph. saturday:

windy. highs will be in the low 30s. winds nw 15-25mph with gusts up to 35mph. wind single digits to the teens. a weak surface area of low pressure to our south/southeast. these 2 features will combine to produce snow showers later today. temperatures will be cold enough for this to all fall as snow except for a few locations along the southern outer banks and northeast north carolina. the heaviest snow will fall over northeast north carolina up to the southside. 2-4" is possible over northeast north carolina with 1-3" over the southside. we'll see a possible 1-2" on the peninsula and lower eastern shore. a dusting up to an inch for the middle peninsula and accomack county. this could cause big problems during the evening commute. this will all will be in the teens. by monday some moisture will move into the colder airmass. that will be our next system. it will start as snow monday morning. then it will transition to mostly rain monday afternoon into tuesday. it may wrap up as a brief wintry mix. stay tuned for updates to all of these systems good morning, hampton roads. let's check

hour, there are eight trucks out on the roads in virginia beach in each snow zone working to pre- treat the roads. as many as 30 operators could be called in to help treat the roads if needed. virginia beach public works crews have their have plows and trucks lined up at its operations center ready to go. and, just in the case, there are tons of pre-mixed salt and sand to use as well. the "frost patrol" started treating bridges and overpasses around 2-30 this morning. spokesman drew lankford says all of those roads should be treated before the morning rush hour. drew lankford - virginia beach public works c17 21:56:18 - "we've had cold temperatures here for a couple of days now. if there's any kind of precipitation ....you're going to have some slick spots, particularly areas say rudee inlet bridge,

her purse as he walks by. you can see what happens next - the woman grabs him and then tackles him to the ground. after struggling for a bit, another man comes over to help the woman. he distracts the robber, so the woman can grab her purse back. the thief walks out of this restaurant, and police are still looking for him. they hope someone recognizes him in this surveillance video. police near san diego are investigating two cases of stolen cars with babies in the back seat, and it all happened in less than 24 hours. the first incident was wednesday evening while a mother checked into a hotel. someone stole her car with her 18- month-old baby in the back seat. officers later recovered the child unharmed after the thief called police and confessed. the second case happened yesterday when a mother ran into her apartment quickly and left her five-month old in the back. officers found the car abandoned an hour later with the baby unharmed and still in her car seat. this morning, norfolk

in the larchmont neighborhood after someone reported a suspicious car. police say on monday, the driver of an early 2000s nissan sentra asked two children questions they thought were in appropriate. officers first heard about this from a post on "nextdoor" - which is like a neighborhood website. if you have any information that could help police call the crime line. an 11-year-old boy in elizabeth city is safe this morning after getting stuck in mud up to his waist. this happened under the knobbs creek bridge near north road street. three officers jumped into very cold water and mud and pulled the boy to safety. everyone went to the hospital for exposure to cold. we're still working to learn how the boy ended up in the mud in the first place. we're hearing from three brave men who saved a 16-year-old boy from freezing water near norfolk's campostella bridge. police officers met with russell orr junior, christian crabtree, and bryan lindsey yesterday to thank them for helping

the next time you feel crammed in your airplane seat, you can thank congress. last night, house lawmakers killed legislation that would have mandated size standards for seats. representative steven cohen from tennessee introduced legislation to make the f-a-a regulate the width of our seats. he says its more than a comfort thing. he says passengers need to be able to get out of their seats quickly in case of an emergency. and doctors say passengers can experience health problems on long flights. according to seat-guru, the average width of an airline seat has shrunk from 18-and-a-half inches in the 1990s to 16-and-a- half inches today. speaking of flying, happening today, the department of transportation plans to release its latest monthly travel report. it will have december's data for flight delays, tarmac times and mishandled bags. the agency will

our team coverage of the impending snow continues in virgina beach. rico bush is in the resort city this morning and has been in contact with officials about preparations. rico, leaders say they're already working to get ahead of the storm. don, brandi, absolutely. virginia beach public works crews say they have the salt and sand ready to go, if needed. spokesman drew lankford tells they have eight crews already assigned to areas throughout the city. that's in addition to the "frost patrol" that started treating bridges and overpasses, which usually freeze first around 2-30 this morning. as many as 30 operators could be called into work to treat the roads, but lankford says he doesn't expect to need that much help. at this hour, two crews are in each snow zone in virginia beach working hard to make sure the roads stay

columbus. a witness, still shaken by the attack, described what happend inside. karen bass / witness "i mean he came in and started beating up on another man i thought it was a personal thing he just started down the row hitting everybody, people were bleeding." investigators say the suspect hurt four people before leading officers on a short chase. those victims are expected to be okay. police say they tried to use a stun gun on the suspect, but shot and killed him as he lunged at them with the machete in one hand and a knife in the other. this morning it's unclear what led up to the attack. firefighters in hampton were busy putting out an apartment fire. dispatchers tell us a fire broke out on terri sue court just after midnight. that's near magruder boulevard. these are pictures of the scene. no one got hurt, but 7 people are displaced and several

loved ones are thankful for a miraculous recovery. after more than 40 days in the hospital, a norfolk state university basketball player is back home with her family. 10 on your side followed up with amber brown as she made her first trip back to the campus yesterday. the 20-year-old suffered a stroke, heart attack, seizures and a medically- induced coma. now, she is walking, talking, and telling jokes. she says it's proof that anything is possible. c18 amber brown 00:24:40 "it's it's a miracle by
