there. nbc 10's jesse gary is at the hospital where the officer is still being treated. let's begin with katy. >> reporter: behind me this is the intersection of torresdale and magee avenue. still a very active scene here. evidence markers litter this intersection. there are more than 30 markers showing ballistic evidence, things like bullets, casings, fragments. this is where the shooting happened around 12:45 this morning. the gun was minutes ago, had it been on the sidewalk all morning. it was just removed by crime scene detectives, taken back to the lab. the police van sitting in the middle of the intersection, the police van does have a bullet hole in. a call came in that was man was armed with a gun on the 6400 block of ditman street. officer stephen korpalski and his partner were headed in that direction when on their way they encountered the armed man here

at torresdale and magee. they tried to stop him but he fired, the officers returned fire, hitting and killing the suspect. >> heavy set black male, orange shirt with a gun. they remembered seeing him a block away. they turn around, spot him, immediately fires his weapon. he strikes the police wagon and he is armed. weapon is on the scene. >> reporter: here's another live look at the scene of magee and torresdale avenues from skyforce 10 above. again, the suspect's weapon, the gun was removed minutes ago from the scene. the suspect's name had not been relea released. we don't know why he had the gun in the first place or why that initial came from the 6400 block of ditman street. internal affairs and homicide

detectives are out here investigating as well. it was a dramatic scene over at einstein hospital where that wounded officer was taken. we go live to nbc 10's jesse gary outside the hospital with an update on the officer's condition. >> i just checked in with the hospital. i'm told the officer is in stable condition. you can see outside right now things are pretty calm. not much activity but that was not the case earlier this morning. let's take a look at our video. police cars from several divisions in the philadelphia police department as well as neighboring departments all rushed here to einstein. they were all concerned, worried, wanted to check on the condition of officer korpalski. a commissioner ramsey came out this morning and talked to us here at the hospital. he says the 15-year district vet suffered a graze wound to the side of his head. >> bleeding and so forth but he alert, he is talking. he's very fortunate. a half inch over, we'd be planning a funeral now.

>> reporter: and the officer returned fire as well as three other officers. he is now on leave, medical leave because of the injuries to his head. he's with his family inside the hospital. he has a 3-week-old baby girl at home and a wife, obviously relieved he is not more severely injured. coming up in the next 30 minutes we'll talk about what lies ahead for this officer beyond just the physical wounds, the emotional woundsç from going through an officer-involved shooting and having to kill a suspect. that's coming up in 30 minutes. live outside the hospital in olney. jesse gary, nbc 10 news. here's a breakdown, a 14-year veteran of the philadelphia police department, stephen korpalski, suffered a graze wound to the head and is expected to be okay. as you heard jesse say there. he's in stable condition. this happened around 12:45. the officers were responding to a call of a man with a gun in the tacony neighborhood. the suspect saw the officers, fired at least two shots. four officers, including korpalski returned fire.

the suspect, who name has not been released, is dead. our reporters are staying on top of all of the new developments. live updates throughout the morning and on >> you saw a number of roads are blocked off around the investigation in tacony. first alert traffic reporter jillian mele has information to get you around that area. >> our show started at 4:00 this morning. i've been on air with these penndot cameras since 4:00 a.m. this has not changed at all. all of this activity has been out there and it is going to be for quite some time. what you're looking at now is the intersection of torresdale and magee. it just keeps going. all of the streets are blocked off in the area. another penndot camera for you. this camera is located at torresdale and robins. here's the breakdown of what we have closed right now. ditman street is closed between levick and hellerman street. take walker street if you need to get around the closure. torresdale avenue which is a

your first alert seven-day forecast in just a bit. 5:35 right now. happening today, a philadelphia woman is expected to appear in court in connection to a deadly crash on the atlantic city expressway. roselyn kornegay will be arraigned this afternoon, mays landing charged with death by auto. it was june. the truck she was driving hit a guardrail, flipped over in hamiltontown. she and her five passengers were thrown from the truck. two people were killed including a 4-year-old boy. now to the casino crisis. a two-day job fair begins today and it could be a live line for thousands of people in atlantic city who will soon be out of work. maryland live casino will be at the sheraton atlantic city convention center from 1:00 to 9:00 today and tomorrow from 8:00 in the morning until 1:00 in the afternoon. show boat, revel and trump plaza are set to close in the coming weeks, leaving about 8,000 people looking for work. revel says it's losing more than $1 million every week by staying open. that's according to theç casins lawyer. he spoke to a judge yesterday.

he says revel still hopes to auction off the property but it needs to close first to stop the big losses. the hotel will close on september 1st. the casino will shut down the next day. we continue to follow the breaking news this morning out of the tacony neighborhood where a philadelphia police officer was shot in the line of duty. a suspect was killed. the officers name is stephen korpalski. he's 34 years old. look at these pictures from the hospital after he was taken there. some dramatic scenes as officers learned of their friend and co-worker's condition. he's stable now. he's expected to be okay but it was scary because he did suffer a graze wound to the head. the investigation continues into exactly what sparked that shooting. we know officers were called to that neighborhood for a report of a man with a gun. we're on top of all of the developments. live updates throughout the morning. stay with us and on

tacony. 14-year veteran of the force, officer stephen korpalski was grazed in the head by a bullet. he's going to be find. it happened as he and other officers responded to reports of an armed man. skyforce 10 is over torresdale and magee, where it happened. the suspect opened fire on the police, they returned fire, shooting and killing that suspect. live team coverage is straight ahead.

nbc 10 is on top of breaking news all morning. we were first on air with this around 2:00 a.m. philadelphia police officer stephen korpalski is in stable condition after being grazed in the head by a bullet. officers responding to a call in tacony when a suspect started shooting at them. they returned fire, killing the suspect. i dug up some numbers on police-involved shooting in ia thisth involved shooting in the city this year, the first in which an officer was wounded, the second in which a suspect was killed. in 2013, there were 43 last year. to another story we're following for you. police and protesters collided in the streets of ferguson, missouri again overnight. this comes a day after the missouri governor summoned the national guard to restore calm

in the st. louis suburb where a teenager was fatally shot by a police officer. this is what happened while you were sleeping. police in ferguson broke up another large protest. officers fired tear gas at the crowd. the protesters violated a new police ban on assembling in one place. the curfew has been lifted. two people were shot overnight. 31 people were arrested. police said there's a small group of criminals trying to pass themselves off as protesters, someç of them from out of state. this is new video just in to nbc 10. police say many of these people are coming from other parts of the country just to cause trouble. 31 people arrested your overnight, some coming from new york and l.a. people have a right to protest but not create violence. >> we are going to make this neighborhood whole.

we're going to make this community whole. we're going to do it together. i am not going to let the criminals that have come out here from across this country or live in this community define this neighborhood and define what we're going to do to make it right. >> the missouri national guard has arrived in ferguson to help restore order there. those white buses carried soldiers to the command post area. later, national guard humvees arrived. the national guard will be under the direction of the state highway patrol there. ferguson has been the scene of racial unrest after 18-year-old michael brown was shot and killed. witnesses say brown was unarmed and had his hands in the air. cease-fire prolonged. israeli and palestinian negotiators have agreed to extend a truce by another 24 hours. that agreement came yesterday just before an egyptian brokered cease-fire was set to expire. negotiators are still trying to reach a long-term deal when israel and palestinian militants in gaza strip. in gaza, workers are trying to

restore basic services damaged by the israeli air strikes. a california district attorney plans to file charges against a former marine in connection to the death of a pregnant woman. search crews found the body of 19-year-old erin corwin, the wife of a current marine in a mine shaft. authorities arrested her former neighbor and alleged lover christopher lee in alaska on suspicion of homicide. from our delaware bureau, a hearing today could affect thousands of drug cases there. it stems from an evidence tampering scandal at the delaware medical examiner's office. according to the "news journal of wilmington," the public that any evidence that went through the state's drug testing lab should be tossed out. prosecutors say there have been more than 50 instances of tampering between 2010 and february of this year. news from our jersey shore bureau, governor chris christie will continue his program called conversations at the jersey shore in monmouth county.

he's pushing for pension and benefit reform in long branch this afternoon. he said it's necessary to protect investments and fund essential state programs. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist tedd florendo. >> what a summer it's been, huh? temperatures right at normal or just below normal. we start off the morning with another gorgeous sunrise shot. we had clouds this morning. they are starting to thin out. so as the day moves on, it looks like we'll have a nice day today. looks like the humidity will be up just a little bit. it's up right now, not too bad, though, even though the humidity will go up. it will still feel comfortable for this time of year. especially for august. it's been nice. 55 for allentown, pottstown, currently 59. mt. holly at 61. 65 for glassboro. atlantic city 65 degrees. upper 60s for philadelphia. stone harbor, sea isle city currently at 74. remaining dry, clouds slowly

pushing out. clouds down south and in delaware, cape may, we're clear, all the way up towards portions of the lehigh valley. the phils takeç on the mariner for the day today. game time 81 degrees, should be warm, should be nice, all undery home run weather for tonight. expected 76 degrees by the time the game ends. high clouds expected for tonight. still remaining dry by 10:00 p.m. should be dry again for tomorrow, too. that's going to change by midweek. original forecast showed the poconos 77 degrees, mostly sunny skies, the lehigh valley, 82. mix of sun and clouds. same goes for the shore. you'll start off with a few clouds and turn to a mix of sun and clouds by the afternoon. looking ahead for the next seven days. dry again for tomorrow. wednesday it looks good. thursday is when we get the showers and thunderstorms that could return again. maybe a chance even on friday but the weekend looks real nice. look at these numbers going for the mid-80s to near just 80 for saturday and sunday. >> real nice. all right, ted, thanks.

let's find out if your ride to work will be nice this morning. >> just a few minutes till 6:00. we know we have an accident out there. jillian mele is going to let us know what's happening. >> 59 northbound right near the philadelphia international airport basically at the start of the ramp to the platt bridge and island avenue, police just got to the scene. it's difficult to see exactly what's going on. this camera is not that tightly zoomed in. we do know there's at least two vehicles involved. there's a lane resfriction in this area. traffic is slowing down over here. for now heading into center city, the vine street expressway, looking good in both directions. volume starting to build on the westbound side as drivers approach 76. that's typical for the almost 6:00 hour. if you're taking septa, including the regional rail lines, everything is on or close to schedule. we have a lot of police activity in the tacony section of philadelphia. this is torresdale and magee. i'll break it down coming up at

suspect was shot and killed by officers in the tacony neighborhood this morning. here's a live picture from skyforce 10 at the scene there, torresdale avenue and magee in tacony where that shooting occurred. our team is there, gathering the latest information on this. we'll have live reports straight ahead. preparing for the pope, there is new reason to believe that pope francis will be coming to philadelphia for the world meeting of families. on the papal plane yesterday, pope francis said next year i'd like to go to philadelphia for the family meeting. i was invited by the president of the united states. last week we showed you how the pope told nbc's anne thompson he wants to visit philadelphia. he said it would likely be part of a three-city trip that would include washington and new york city. the vatican will not officially confirm the pope's travel plans more than six months ahead of time. this morning, the taney dragons are the pride and talk of philadelphia.

neighborhood. this is torresdale neighborhood and magee. the shooting happened about five hours ago. officers are still there canvassing the scene and gathering evidence. we have team coverage. nbc 10's katy zachry live at the scene there. you can see on the map where it happened, magee avenue and torresdale avenue. nbc 10's jesse gary live outside the hospital where that officer is still being treated. jesse? >> yes, that's right, chris. we talked about the graze wound to his head. the bullet came about this far, a quarter inch to the right from being just a graze wound to being a fatal head shot. that according to the police department. let's take a look at the video when officers arrived here at the medical center. they heard the initial report of an officer being hit in the head. there was a fast response and emotional response here at the hospital by other officers. commissioner ramsey says stephen korpalski will be on injured leave until he
