nbc 10 news starts now. the end of an era in atlantic city after nearly three decades on the boardwalk show boat casino hotel has shut its doors. first, tracking storms. nbc 10 first alert weather radar shows the rain and thunderstorms hitting the delaware valley disrupting outdoor plans this holiday weekend. that includes a philadelphia tradition, the made in america festival, where thousands of people were forced to watch this afternoon's performances with light rain coming down. what a difference a day makes.

yesterday's mild weather gave way to a hot and sticky sunday and scattered rain and thunderstorms. brittney shipp is tracking the weather changes. where are you seeing storms right now? >> right now definitely moving through parts of the suburbs. as we head through the rest of tonight we continue with activity. the thunderstorms are just outside of the philadelphia area. let's take a closer look moving into parts of newark and as we head into the rest of tonight we are still going to see a chance of storms as we move into the next 30 minutes or so. we expect storms 6:43 closer to 7:00 p.m. in the philadelphia area. once again we have another batch of moisture and moderate rainfall moving into parts of allen town. this will continue to track to the northeast. storms moving around 35 miles per hour. as we head into the rest of the evening we expect to see heavy

down pours and possibility of localized flooding and wind speeds 35 to 40 miles per hour. i will be tracking what to expect as we head into the rest of tonight. as we head into the actual holiday tomorrow. you can track the chance for rain and storms in your area this holiday weekend with our nbc 10 first alert weather app. it is a free download available on our website, turning now to the other big story, atlantic city's casino crisis. the showboat casino hotel shut down at 4:00 this afternoon after 27 years of business leaving more than 2,000 workers out of a job. nbc 10 is live in atlantic city where she talked to some former employees. what have they told you? >> reporter: there was a lot of hugging and crying, people were devastated as the doors of the casino closed for the very last time. showboat stopped admitting new

customers around 3:00. at 4:00 security guards emerged. one of the final songs played was queen's "another one bites the dust" because the showboat is one of three casinos closing within the next two weeks. rebel will have a two day closing tomorrow. it is news that has many worried especially the thousands of employees who no longer will have jobs. we caught up with some of them. as they walked out of the showboat today they tell us they don't know what they will do next. >> it's very sad. a lot of good memories. >> it's a shame all of the people losing jobs and it is a fun casino. >> because it is history and this building did not deserve it. >> reporter: as we come back out live you can see there are a group of folks outside. a lot of people taking selfies with the closed signs.

the reps tell us the hotel and casino were booked all weekend. at 4:00 everybody was cleared out. hundreds of folks stopped by for the closing. they took pictures. a lot of folks reminiscing about the last 27 years as they said their final good bye. we are live in atlantic city, nbc 10 news. thank you. this afternoon we received a letter from the ceo of caesar's entertainment. gary loveman says most importantly on behalf of the entire ceaser's family i want to thank the showboat atlantic city team for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to our guests both throughout the years and especially over the past several weeks. showboat is just the first of the atlantic city casino closures. tomorrow the revel hotel is set to shut down followed by the casino tuesday and trump plaza set to close september 16. the department of labor is

event. the concert is curated by jay-z and has been held annually in philadelphia over labor day weekend since 2012. new at 6:00 an arrest made in the murder of a man outside a restaurant. paul mchernen was shot to death. the shooting happened on august 15 just days before his 28th birthday. police say he and another man had words outside the restaurant. the suspect followed him and pulled out a gun. investigators say they have arrested the alleged gunman, 20-year-old in police custody. another suspect is in custody charged in a deadly shooting in bucks county. he is accused of shooting his brother-in-law in the living room of his home in bristol.

nbc 10 on the scene. investigators say the two had a fight and rivera pulled out a .12 gauge shotgun and shot rodriguez. rivera was taken into custody at the scene. philadelphia police are looking for the driver of a car that hit four people leaving a bar. investigators say this was no accident. we are told it started this morning inside redz bar and grill. the driver ran over the victims after they left the bar. police are looking for a dark colored suv. six people rescued from a sinking boat in a jersey shore community. the coast guard plucked them from their 25-foot vessel after started taking on water. a person on board the boat managed to call for help. the coast guard says there was two feet of water in the boat when rescue crews arrived. no one was hurt.

a parade today in delaware county honors two more young sports teams. the 13 year olds and 15 year olds won the babe ruth world series championship. a lot of attention for the world series play these teams deserve just as much attention. a parade today went from the square shopping center and ended at thomas field where a celebration was held.

congratulations. celebration of style in north philadelphia today. local hair stylist gave free hair cuts to neighborhood girls between the ages of 5 and 17. the annual event is called curls for girls. the stylists say it is their way of giving back to the community. last year more than 200 girls got a new look just in time for the start of school. heads up if you are hitting the road this holiday weekend. it could be the busiest labor day travel weekend in years. it is expected to be the busiest labor day travel weekend since 2008's recession partly because unemployment is down and job growth is up. memorial day and 4th of july travel was also up. experts say it is because of an improving economy and lower gas prices. if you need to fill up your car here is a look at what you can expect to pay for gas in our region. a gallon of regular costs around $3.46 a gallon in philadelphia. it dropped to $3.35 a gallon in

delaware and the cheapest in south jersey at an average of $3.20 a gallon. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> as we head into the rest of tonight we could see heavy down pours. gusty wind speeds. so take it easy as you are winding down. we are tracking a heat wave as we head into the next couple of days. temperatures close to 90 degrees. feels like temperature once again tomorrow will be mid 90s. here is a live look outside right now. you can see we are starting to see wet roads out there. a closer look at the rain right now. it is heaviest near delaware county pushing into parts of new castle county. as we head into the rest of the evening we continue to see storms tracking to the east northeast.

also just to the north of new port we are seeing rainfall rate closer to 2.74 inches, a heavy down pour. that could cause localized flooding. most of the thunderstorms are pushing to the northeast and the east closer to 30, 35 miles per hour. these are quick moving storms. we could see rainfall in philadelphia again closer to 6:30. 6:37 for camden and 6:39 for terry hill. that is also tracking to the east as we head to the rest of the evening. closer to 7:00 p.m. we start to see more rainfall and isolated thunderstorms closer to the shore. as of right now the shores stay dry. that is going to change as we head to the rest of tonight. another round is going to come into parts of trenton by 10 p.m. it looks like we see more clearing in philadelphia. if you are closer to the shore overnight you hear the rainfall. by the time you wake up tomorrow

morning at 7:00 a.m. we are dealing with rain in atlantic city stretching down to parts of cape may. we see on and off showers for your actual labor day. it is another hot and steamy day for us with temperatures throughout the city pushing closer to 90 degrees. that is what happened today. the right now temperatures cooled down a little bit. the rain has cooled down and temperatures in wilmington at 75. 89 degrees and feels like temperature in the mid 80s for philadelphia. 98 degrees in dover. as we head into tomorrow take a look at our feels like temperature. make sure you are drinking plenty of liquids. for the poconos we stay in the high 70s. 90 degrees in the city. if you are staying closer to the shore scattered showers expected. heavy rain expected for us. isolated storms. temperatures staying mild for philadelphia. 73 degrees. by the time we head into tomorrow another chance of storms hot and humid. seven day forecast shows that
