president demands an investigation tonight. steve sweeney is calling on the top law enforcement officer to review the punishment for the attack on rice's future wife in an atlantic city casino. roger goodell broke his silence today. meantime, both rice and his wife responded to the league suspension and firing. nbc 10's keith jones has the new developments. jim, jackie, rice was charged with aggravated a vault in march. he was allowed to enter the pre-trial intervention program avoiding jail time. lawmakers in new jersey and critics of the nfl are demanding a review. extremely disturbing, that's how new jersey state senate steve sweeney describes this violent video showing former football starr ray rice knocking her out in an elevator. domestic violence is a serious problem that can't be ig ford and shouldn't be treated
lightly. that's why he's urging the state attorney general tonight to review how rice's case was handled. the nfl is already doing that. >> we didn't get this right. that's my responsibility. i'm accountable for that. speaking to cbs news, nfl commissioner roger goodell called the video sickening and admits the league saw it for the first time when you did on monday morning. >> we assumed there was a video. we asked for video. but we were never granted that opportunity. >> today the 27-year-old running back reportedly talked to espn saying i have to be strong for my wife. she's so strong. we're in good,eyvyñsxé spirits. we have a lot of people praying for us and we'll continue to support each other. his wife janay released this statement supporting her husband and calling this firestorm a nightmare. "this is our life. what don't you all get? if your intentions were to hurt us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you've succeeded
on so many levels. just know that we'll continue to grow and show the world what real love is." the ravens sent this letter to fans apologizing. he says the team should have pursued their investigation more rigorous rigorously. they didn't and they were wrong. he said "i'm sorry. we let you down". >> keith jones, nbc 10 news. two young kids were stabbed outside of a bucks county elementary school after a game tonight. it happened around 7:00. police believe an argument during the game led to that stabbing. both victims are in the hospital and expected to survive. detectives are getting search warrants to search for clues. new at 11:00. the search for two kids wanted tore beating up and robbing a boy as he sat in his wheelchair. it's the second time in two days that the authorities investigated a beating involving kids. the most recent victim showed us
how he's taking the high road despite what happened to him. >> the victim's facmily tells m the attack on this street corner which ended in this sewer grate capped off a series of run-ins. tonight that victim is taking a stand of his own. >> this is where you normally exercise, huh? >> yeah. >> the cerebral pals i will may keep him confined to this wheelchair but not keeping him from living large until an assault yesterday afternoon. >> all of a sudden -- >> that left him wondering, why me? >> i've been punched a couple times. it makes me so angry that they would do this to anybody. >> he and his father believe the two attackers, just 12 to 14 years old themselves, are the same kids who have been stealing family cats and bullying quan for months. >> as a dad, you want to do everything. you want to make everything okay. you don't want your child to know that there are such evil
people in the world. >> monday's run-in was the worst yet. state police tell us the kids shoved his wheelchair into this sewer grate and while it was stuck, roughed him up and stole his keys. >> punched me and then the other guy tried to push me out of the chair, then he punched me again. >> state police are dealing with another case of violence among youths. they arrested three teens in connection with this attack on a man with special needs also in newark. but forfq9(ñ quan tonight, the questions of why me are now evolving to deeper questions. >> why are they doing this? what are they going to do? how can we get them to stop and help them? >> you'd like to help them? >> they need help. i don't think any kid would do that. >> reporter: one of the suspects may be identified by a small birthmark on his hand. police canvassed this neighborhood notifying residents of the incident and are hoping
for hitips from the public. reporting in newark, nbc 10 news. turning to our weather now. a little chilly outside. >> it is, isn't it? sniemts sheena parveen is tracking your bus stop forecast for us. >> chilly temperatures you mentioned, it's very cool but comfortable. 70 degrees outside right now. the winds are gusting near 23 miles an hour. so it is cool and breezy outside. it will stay this way overnight tonight. now for your bus stop forecast. a cool cloudy start to the morning. the clouds will be lingering going through the morning hours. by 7:00 a.m., mid-60s. 8:00, still mid-60s. tad warmer than today and developing sunshine through the afternoon. more warm air and thunderstorms are also in the forecast. we'll show you the timing of that coming up. teachers working without a contract in a delaware county school district picketed tonight but ridley teachers say the main contract dispute isn't about
money. we're live outside ridley middle school where teachers gathered on the picket line. >> reporter: teachers came to the school because it was back to school night and they wanted to educate parents a little bit about their contract dispute. on this back to school night, 140 members of the ridley teachers union made sure parents got a lesson outside the classroom. >> all we want is a fair and reasonable contract. >> june 30th, the contract expired for the 400 members of the ridley education association. >> we are hung up on salary. however, we think that we're asking for what would be a very modest salary increase. >> what is the salary increase you're asking for? >> a little bit less than 1% for teachers at the top of the salary scale. >> the union president says the average teacher makes about $75,000 a year. but the main sticking point, he says, is guaranteed preparation time during the school day.
>> what is most important to teachers is what most impacts our daily service to the students. >> if you could get that prep time, would that settle this? >> i think that would be one major step forward. yes. but they won't even talk about it. >> that's why teachers had to move the discussion to the street with parents and the media. tonight the school superintendent responded with a statement saying, the board finds commenting on the negotiations through the media counterproductive. most parents seem sympathetic to the teachers, handing them informational flyers. >> more prep time. that's a very important piece. >> they're priceless. i will say that. >> reporter: i asked teachers if they intend to strike. they say no. but they intend to go back to more back to school nights. lynn kan, nbc 10 news. the eastern area school district finalized its proposal
for safety measures. among them, digital cameras to replace older cameras on school buses. the district wants to build new security vestibules at all schools, in lifetime 2012 sandy hook elementary school massacre that left 26 people dead. they would send visitors into a reception area before getting into a school. the new plans will be presented to the school board in two weeks. a community on alert. gunmen target homeowners in one chester county neighborhood and a pair of daytime robberies. state police say the same gunman hit homes on canterbury court and another street last week. they threatened to shoot a 67-year-old man and got away with a rifle and ammunition. the group of three men canvassed neighborhoods in a white sedan and a blue van. tomorrow, the defense will begin presenting its case in the trial of the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl. the family insists she's innocent. her mother and sister broke their silence and talked to nbc
10 today. they said the trial has been an emotional experience because they feel for the victim but also said the defendant portrayed in court is not the woman they know. her mother did not want to appear on camera. >> i'm hearing all of this evidence that they have and i just don't believe it. i won't believe it. the person they're describing, that's not my daughter. >> her attorney says he could call up to three witnesses tomorrow. we don't know if christina row gusters will be one of them. now to the casino crisis. another atlantic city casino could soon close doors. trump entertainment resorts filed for bankruptcy and warned that the trump taj mahal could close as early as november 13th. the company indicated the closure is likely if it doesn't receive cost cutting concessions from union employees. union leaders say the casino wants workers to give up health and retirement benefits. >> i believe that the trump
organization is trying to capitalize on the fear of workers in atlantic city to get concessions that no other casino in the city has even considered. >> if the taj mahal closes, it would be the fifth casino in atlantic city to do so this year. the sister casino, trump plaza, is scheduled to close doors next week. a scare in atlantic city. miss rhode island collapsed on stage. ivy depew was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. pageant officials say she was overheated and fainted but she's going to be all right. tonight the preliminary rounds were held at boardwalk hall. earlier today we got to see the fancy footwear the contestants will put on for the show us your shoes parade saturday night. all the shoes were designed by the women. new miss america will be crowned sunday night. new at 11:00, set to scuffle. >> the train passenger who went to extreme measures to try and get a free ride.
a bizarre incident at a septa train station is caught on tape. a student got into a tussle with police yesterday. it was all over a trans pass. the 16-year-old jumped the turnstile and climbed on top of a waiting train. surveillance video provided by septa shows other commuters yelling at him to get off the train. that was just the beginning. >> at that point, a westbound train heading from center city is pulling into the station. the juvenile then jumps from the eastbound train roof to the westbound train roof right where the engineer is. >> the student was finally arrested after he jumped off the train and ran back to the other side of the platform.
he's facing charges tonight that include assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and interfering with mass transit. two suspects are behind bars tonight accused of a vie rent purse snatching at the promenade center in burlington county. 36-year-old joshua mcfarland and misty riddle are in jail on $250,000 bail. nbc 10 told but this story last month. the pair snatched a purse from a 75-year-old woman outside the shopping center. the victim broke her hip and her arm. police say they caught the suspects after learning they were arrested for a similar crime in hamilton township. tomorrow night, president obama will take his case to the american people for a more intense war against islamic terrorists where he speaks to the nation in a primetime a address. he says he does not need approval to take action. many in washington are demanding a vote. in the "wall street journal" poll tonight, 61% of americans
approve of military action against isis in iraq and syria. mr. obama will outline his plan tomorrow night. you can watch the president'ses address tomorrow night at 9:00 on nbc 10 and nbc10.com. now to decision 2014 and the results from delaware's primary election. turnout was very light. in the republican race for the u.s. senate nomination, kevin wade beat out carl sming. wade will face chris coops in november. the eyes of many were on the state treasurer's race. kenneth simpler narrowly beat ou cheryl valenzuela. >> he will take on barney after running unopposed have flowers withdrew from the race. the residents of one jersey shore town are calling for action. in cape may county, they're on high alert because of beach
erosion. the ocean has been taking over the bird sanctuary and are worried the town is next. they're set to dump sand in the area by late october but some neighbors say they need a long-term fix. >> the sand will be here, will offer some protection for a little while. in three or four, five years, they'll be back at it. >> according to township officials, the state simply can't afford to build a permanent barrier. now your first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> another cloudy and cool day to start our week. tomorrow, we'll see a change in the forecast. the morning clouds, though, those will be lingering through the area. but as we go into the afternoon, breaks of sunshine. then we get a little bit warmer and on thursday, we're talking about a warmer day. much warmer. temperatures near 90 degrees. that's at least one day this week or only one day this week, i should say. and with the 90 degree temperatures come some
thunderstorms. so on the warmest day this week, we're tracking the chance for thunderstorms this week. temperatures through the lehigh valley, upper 60s. pretty comfortable. 66 pottstown, 70 philadelphia. northeast philly at 70 degrees. wildwood at 70 as well. 6 millville and atlantic city. only 61 up in mt. pocono. the weather system to the south yesterday, that has pushed off shore. that's where you see the rain. locally, we still have clouds around from it. the clouds will linger. we've been dealing with a few spots of sprinkles, but that's about it. the rest of tonight should remain on the dry side. we have a rip current risk along the shore and the delaware beaches as we go into tomorrow. we could see a moderate risk of rip current. be careful at the shore. a coastal flood advisory. we could see minor tidal flooding. mostly in the morning hours. now we look to the midwest. moving into chicago as we speak, this is our weather system for thursday.
so as this approaches the area thursday, the heat will come ahead of it and a line of thunderstorms. future weather for tonight, as we start off going into tomorrow morning, we do stay dry. clouds will linger for the morning hours. through the afternoon, a little bit of sunshine starts to move into the area. little warmer than today. but we still stay dry. thursday, we'll start to see the humidity go up. clouds increasing. by the evening hours, 8:00 p.m. thursday, we could have a line of thunderstorms move through the area. this will swing through new jersey and delaware and clear out into friday. and friday we'll have cooler temperatures. the storms will be part of a cold front moving through. for tonight, cloudy, breezy outside. mid 60s for the low in philadelphia. 58 degrees areas north and west. tomorrow, cloudy in the morning, sun in the afternoon. we'll see improvements tomorrow. 77 to 80 degrees for the high temperature. just a little bit warmer than today. then on thursday, we're a lot warmer. near 90 degrees. humidity and thunderstorms in the forecast. again, the storms will be later
