least three homes in southwest philadelphia. and neighbors say they've been complaining for months about the property where the fire started. and those colder temperatures are moving in. a live look moving in parts of the area are near freezing. we won't be warming up much anytime soon. >> good morning, welcome to "nbc10 news." i'm tracy davidson. >> you said that with a smile on your face. >> well, we know it's coming. let's get going. >> and maybe an umbrella, too. let's go to bill henley for the "first alert" forecast. good morning. >> good morning. it's under clear skies with temperatures in the 30s and low 40s. 40 degrees here at nbc10. we're running 15 degrees colder, though, in philadelphia, compared to yesterday morning. 24 degrees colder in wilmington in that anywhere you stack it, it's quite a turn around from yesterday. millville is down to 35. it's in the 20s in the pocono
mountains. we will see sunshine to start with, though. clouds will be moving in this morning. by 9:00, 43 degrees. mostly cloudy at noon. and later today, we'll be tracking some rain and for some areas, some snow. the future weather in less than ten minutes when i'm back. right now, "first alert" traffic report jillian mele is standing by, good morning, jillian. >> good morning, bill. we have a problem when it comes to mass transit. new jersey light rail delayed about 30 minutes between franklin and trenton. septa rail lines looking good there. we just had an accident clear off of route 1 southbound. just of 413. and both lanes now open. both directions of route 1 looking pretty good right now. southwest philadelphia, we have the fire location, florence avenue is blocked off between 54th and 56th. you can stick to warrington avenue as your alternate. we're following breaks news.
a woman is found beaten to death inside her home in west philadelphia. nbc10's monique braxton is live on scene. what have you learned, monique? >> reporter: tracy in the last half hour since we spoke to you, we can tell you that several homicide investigators have arrived here at 47th north 53rd street in west philadelphia. it is just a stone's throw from 57 and market which is a very busy part of town. you see a patrol car remains on guard. here is what investigators tell us happened here. they say before 3:00 this morning, police were called by a 57-year-old woman saying three men were forcing their way into her home. they also tell us that a 62-year-old female roommate was found in the first floor bedroom naked and beaten. several bruises on her body according to police. but they also say the exact cause of her death is not known. now, the survivor also suffered minor bruising. because she is the only witness to the attack, she is now at a local hospital with guarded by police. and they say heavily guarded by
police. but she is in stable condition. investigators say that they're not sure why the home invasion happen they're not sure why the roommates were beaten because there is nothing taken or disturbed inside this house. right now, homicide investigators are combing the scene for choose. also looking for any possible weapon that may have been used in this attack. we're going to stay on the scene and gather more information and be back with you in the next half hour. live for now in west philadelphia, monique braxton "nbc 10 news today." and we're following more breaking news out of southwest philadelphia. about 12 people are out of their homes this morning because of this fire on florence avenue. it started at a row home at the end of the building. spread to the next two homes. neighbors say someone just moved into the home a few weeks ago. investigators don't know how it started. and we have new investigation on three stories we've been telling for you overnight. the first of those, septa says a train stuck under a bridge in
north philadelphia will not impact the morning commute. skyforce 10 was over that scene at fifth and allegheny last night. normal service is expected on the trenton regional rail line. and in south philadelphia, police are looking for one man who killed one man and injured an incident bystander. 35-year-old wayne jones died. 56-year-old craig washington is in critical condition. police say washington was not the intended target. in delaware county an 80-year-old man is in custody after police say he barricaded himself inside the apartment there and fired shots at officers. skyforce 10 is over the scene in upper darby township. investigators say joseph smith fired nine or ten shots. the s.w.a.t. team went into the apartment and took him into custody. there is new information on a mother and her 7-year-old son both found dead. sources tell nbc10 the case is now being handled as a homicide. reports say autopsies will be
conducted on the two victims later this morning. yesterday's fire ripped through the home in washington avenue in egg harbor city. neighbors say the mother's boyfriend was rushed to the hospital with antistab wounds. >> it's very devastating. >> police say the injured man who is in stable condition described an intruder come into the home. no arrest has been made. three things we are following for you today. >> first, studying violence as a public health issue. new jersey leaders are doing just that, they're holding hearings throughout the fall to get the public input on how to cut down on violence in the state and gauge how it impacts everyday life. today's meetings will be held on rutgers university campus. in delaware county teachers and support staff will be rallying today. they plan to walk in informal picket lines in media and downingtown. more than 3200 members of part of the process. and the boys and girls clubs
of philadelphia are teaming up with our parent company comcast to unveil a new technology lab. it's all part of the nationwide learning initiative. the facility will be located at the wayne avenue boys and girls club. former "american idol" winner jordin sparks will be there for today's event. no more walking to work for this guy. we'll tell you how a case of mistaken identity has paid off for this man who was questioned by police more than a dozen time. >> clear skies and it's colder this morning. the temperatures are dropping most of the area in the 30s right now and a bit of a brees blowing. tracking wet weather in our area.

at 51 degrees. that's one of the warm spots this morning. a northerly wind at 9 miles an hour makes it feel like five degrees colder. clouds off to the north and west. you'll see those arrive this morning and this afternoon. we'll watch for wet weather. but it's completely dry and clear right now. future weather, hour by hour shows 41 degrees at 7:00. then the clouds move in. the temperatures will move up. so we see a little sunshine to start with. but it it fades quickly. pottstown will be 44 degrees at 11:00. 40s for most of delaware. might peak at 50 degrees during the afternoon hours but look what we've got here. rain, chilly rain falling for lancaster, reading and allentown. it will be cold enough that the pocono mountains could see snow developing. might see a flurry north and west this evening. mainly, it's going to be a very light rain. and as it moves into philadelphia, it will be thinning out during the evening hours. that's 9:00 this evening. during the later evening hours, a few showers will fizzle

and attacked them. nbc10's monique braxton is working to get new information on what exactly happened. we'll have a live report in about 15 minutes. and here say live picture from a fire scene. this is in philadelphia along florence avenue. no one was hurt here. but three row homes were destroyed and about a dozen people were out of their homes. new this morning, a man from northeastern pennsylvania who was repeatedly mistaken or accused trooper killer eric frein now has his own car because of what he went through. james kelly walked to work every day, during the frein search he was stopped by police more than a dozen times. so the community came together and they raised about $24,000 for kelly to buy a car. he used less than half that money to buy a 2007 subaru. >> i want to thank everyone for their support because without everyone supporting me like this, today wouldn't happen. >> now, his daily walk to work took him two hours round trip.
it was in bear township, monroe county which became ground zero in the search for frein. and new developments in that controversial case in ferguson missouri. nbc nbc10's vai sikahema has what. >> a doctor later today is expected to testify before a grand jury. the panel will hear from a man who performed a private autopsy on michael brown. a grand jury deciding whether to indict the officer who shot the teen dead this past summer. and we have an update this morning on the condition of two workers rescued the one world trade center in new york. here's the scene yesterday. the two window washers got trapped in a dangling scaffold 69 stories up. they're now out of the hospital after being treated for hypothermia. and it will start to look even more like christmas at rockefeller center in new york.
today, the huge swarovski star will be placed. it's 9 1/2 feet in diameter. it weighs 950 pounds. it's made up of 25,000 crystals. it was designed in german artist michael hammer. the tree will be lifted for the first time on december 3 prd. the debate over another casino in philadelphia is heating up. [ applause ] these are casino opponents packing the hall in south philadelphia. the group is against the casino possibly coming to a hotel near the sports complex. here's a live picture of the holiday inn. that is the site right there. that's the site they want to build at. many at the site are worried about increased traffic and crime and how close the casino would be to schools. >> we can't change our focus.
we're worried about our children because tomorrow is going to be their future. and if we don't protect them, you have to worry about that. >> now, there are a total of four proposals being considered for the new casino. state gaming officials are scheduled to vote on tuesday on whether to grant even another casino license in the city. peco customers could get rebates by recycling their old appliances starting today, peco will pay $50 for old appliances. the goal is get people to replace the old energy guzzling fridges. time is to prepare your car for winter. aaa says taking these important steps can save you money in the long run. from december of last year to march, aaa mid-atlantic responded to more than 180,000 roadside emergency calls in pa

the 30s for most of the area. and we will see sunshine to start with, but not all day. clouds will be moving in during the day. moving out the door right now, you can see it's nice and clear. that has allowed temperatures to drop this morning. right now, philadelphia international is 41 degrees. that's 16 degrees colder than yesterday at this time. you there can see the clear skies over center city. this is a view from the nbc10 studios. we have seen a little wind. not windy, compared to yesterday, much less wind. pottstown, 32 degrees, 35 in wilmington. toms river right now at 30 degrees. blue bell, glenside, willow drove all into the 30s. collegeville has dropped below freezing at 30 degrees. 30 in upper providence while 33 degrees in pottstown. we will need some sunshine, and we'll see some to start with but that's not going to last. clouds will be moving in.
and there's no huge storm system coming our way. you can see showers to the west and south. this is the system that's going to come together with some light precipitation for our area. first the clouds, they'll be increasing. that's 11:00 this morning. here comes the wet weather, north and west of philadelphia. 5:00. some smoke in tnow in the pocon mountains. might see a dusting. 10:00 tonight, some light rain showers in philadelphia. might see a snowflake mixing in as it pulls away. early tomorrow morning, we'll be dry, that's 4:00. and clouds moving right back out. cold weather ahead. increasing sunshine. but it doesn't last. temperatures in the 40s for most of the area. showers late this afternoon and evening. by tomorrow, we are dry once again. and sunshine, but just 44 after a colder morning tomorrow. down to 44 degrees. and colder for saturday morning.
for citizens bank park for the als walk, it will be colder. sunday evening, a chance of chilly rain showers that will continue through monday morning. and cold winds tuesday. eight minutes before 6:00 right now. we're just getting word of a problem on the northeast extension with the ride to work. >> nbc10's traffic reporter jillian mele will let us know what happened. >> we got an unconfirmed report that there's an accident blocking the lane there. i went on the pennsylvania website and they have confirmed there is an accident blocking southbound side of the northeast dissension between lansdale and the toll plaza. this came in the last few minutes so we'll work to get details for you. 309 is your best alternate route. river line has a delay. 30 minutes between trenton, communication problems there. this is 95 at the philadelphia international airport.
you can see it's quiet there in both directions. no accidents and no delays to report on 95. and this just into our newsroom. we're dealing with a fire in strawberry mansion, north myrtlewood sfreet between oxford, skyforce 10 on its way there. 29th street to get around it. 5:53. a new study maps out the likelihood that you'll develop heart disease based on where you live. and a family says they may be forced to give up their decades old business because of what business leaders are doing. we'll explain when we take you county by county next.
skyforce 10 is over what was a fire. this is a fire scene at north myrtlewood street and strawberry mansion. the occupants did make it out safely. although we're told one person was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene but will be fine. we'll get more information and bring you an update in the next hour. this morning, a study shows
the likelihood americans will develop heart disease over the next decade. you can see the findings on the map. heart disease is predicted to to be worse in southern parts of the country. in our area, the risk will be in the 7% area. the stu from centers for disease control took into account, smoking obesity, diet and other risk findings. and the findings could help direct the government's health initiative. a longtime tradition in delaware could be revamped. in suffolk county, a family owned business may have to close because the town is thinking of taking over the operation. leaders believe they could eventually make a couple hundred thousands a year and put that money towards an emergency fund but some people have signed an
online save steen petition to keep that business up and running as it has been. >> we are taxpayers, so not only will they be putting my family out of business, they will literally be spending our tax money to buy new umbrellas and take it over. and it's a real kick in the teeth. >> and town council is expected to make a decision on that tomorrow. in new castle, another chance to help the less fortunate. a d.a.r.t. start the bus fund. will give out food to 550 relief partners throughout the state. and 70 local businesses are taking part in project keep warm. that's double the precipitation they had last year. the annual drive collects coats, hats and other cold weather gear. a great because in the county for this time of year.
