nbc 10 news starts now. you should expect delays on the tracks if you take amtrak or septa. crews are working right now to remove this crippled train involved in a deadly crash and derailment yesterday. for villanova it all comes down to tonight. the wildcats play for a national championship and we are live in houston following the team and the fans and their march to victory. and a live look outside. we are dry right now. nbc 10 first alert weather is tracking showers ahead for your afternoon. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm katy zachry. it is 4:31 on your monday. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast. hi, bill. >> it is dry right now. you may want to take an umbrella with you. clouds are starting to move in. at this hour behind the clouds
to the north, actually snow falling. it's cold enough for that. but very dry air, most of that is not even reaching the ground, including that line that you can see that's now moving into upper montgomery and bucks counties. that snow will not get to the ground level. different story the farther north you go. steadier snow in the scranton area, light snow there. temperatures in the 20s. above freezing for allentown, pottstown, philadelphia at 42 degrees. even if you see a few snow flakes to the north they're not going to be sticking. the temperatures climbing, mainly dry. may be an isolated shower. 9:0052 degrees with the southwesterly winds, getting stronger at lunch time. that will help warm us up during the day today, into the 60s today. but it's not going to stay dry all day. there is rain ahead. we'll go through the futurecast hour by hour to show you when that moves in when i'm back in ten minutes. right now, let's see how the traffic is dealing with monday morning. jessica boyington has first alert traffic. >> we are watching mass transit
for sure. we're dealing with major delays, at least up to 30 minutes for septa and amtrak. luckily, though, the wilmington/newark line for septa is running again on a regular weekday service but they are sharing tracks with amtrak. two and three are out of service this morning. we're only riding with one and four which will make 30-minute delays outbound trains will operate from 30th to university. no outbound service to darby station to highland station. septa will also be running trains into newark. we're also in the middle of a bridge hopping for the tacony palmyra bridge. scheduled apriling for 4:10 this morning. we're also in the process of that. the betsy ross can be your alternate. no problems on the walt or the burlington bristol. here's what we know about the deadly amtrak derailment. the train has been moved from the tracks in trainer, delaware county. federal investigators recovered a data recorder and two cameras
as they tryç and piece togethe what went wrong yesterday. two veteran amtrak workers using a backhoe were killed when train 89 hit them. investigators want to know why that veteran maintenance crew was working along live railroad tracks. monique braxton is live along the tracks in trainer with more on where the investigation stands at this early hour. monique? >> reporter: overnight we've been watching the movement here on the tracks in trainer, this over my shoulder, crews have been working on the actual tracks. they've also been moving the train north. the goal here is to have minor disruptions during the morning rush hour and to get that train up to 30th street station. >> we would like to offer our condolences to the families of the deceased. >> reporter: two people were killed and 35 injured when amtrak and palmetto train slammed into a backhoe sunday morning. delaware county's medical examiner plans to release the
identities of the workers after the autopsies today. but the national transportation safety board official has confirmed one of the deceased was the operator of the equipment. u.s. senator chuck schumer of new york said, the other person killed was a supervisor. we're also learning they were both amtrak veterans. so what happened? what caused the train carrying 348 crew members and passengers to collide with the backhoe? we posed that question to the national transportation safety board investigator. >> as part of our investigation we will be looking at the track structure and the work that's with performed at the time of the accident. as of now we have recovered the event data recorder, the forward-facing video and the inward facing video from the locomotive. >> the ntsb investigator also says the event data recorder has been sent to the safety board's offices, the laboratory in washington. they hope to answer such

university. so it wasn't surprising to see the fans and alumni who have gathered here in houston for this championship game to gather for a mass yesterday morning. and it was packed. take a look at this, a ball room at the team hotel, father peter donahue, led the team, their families and all of the fans in prayer. the key message coming out of that homily was to believe, possibilities to exist in life just with this upcoming championship game. at the end they all sung the alma mater, one last major gathering before this big night. >> we've all começ together an the team and coaches, they're kind, they're humble. i think they deserve to go all the way. >> are you praying for a win? >> i don't think you're allowed to pray for a win, are you? we all have our cute prayers every once in a while. absolutely, even though it's probably not what i'm supposed to say. >> hopefully it works. villanova and north carolina play later tonight, right here
at nrg stadium in houston. the last time villanova won the championship was 1985. what does the class of 1985 think about what's going on here with all of the fan fair, celebration and excitement. we'll hear from some of them, coming up in the next half hour. villanova fans are expected to pack watch parties on and around campus tonight. university and radnor township police tell us they'll have emergency operations center in place and more staff to answer calls. also additional officers will be patrolling on foot, motorcycles, bikes and horses. and there will be bomb-sniffing dogs out there. local police made eight arrests after nova's win in the final four, mostly for disorderly conduct. nbc 10 is your home for villanova's march to victory. be sure to watch our one-hour special tonight at 7:00 p.m.,

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 4:41. a cloudy start this morning. dry in philadelphia and 41 degrees. there is a bit of wet weather i'm tracking this morning and it is north and west where the temperatures are colder. doylestown is 36 degrees. in lehigh county, well above freezing.
allentown is 41 degrees. that's a good thing. we have light snow showers trying to move through the area. they are moving through but they're not reaching the ground. it's just too dry and too warm for anything to stick. you may see rain showers this afternoon. you will see rain showers this afternoon. might see snowflakes this morning. temperatures in the upper 50s, a big turnaround, fleetwood, pennsburg, morgantown, 60 degrees. showers during the afternoon will be steadier than what you'll see this morning. bordentown hits 65. eventually showers move into the coast. look at these temperatures inland. low 70s for smyrna and milford. 60s for wilmington and woodstown. philadelphia will see rain at 67 degrees. seven day when i'm back in ten. >> all right, bill, thank you. we want to get a check on the vine street expressway because for a while there was some overnight construction affecting things. jessica? >> that's right, katy. we're open and good to go through center city right now on the vine. this is right around 24th street. westbound and eastbound, both

is a cool 39 degrees to wake you up on this monday morning. it is 4:45. now to the latest on the deadly amtrak train derailment in delaware county yesterday. amtrak says it's operating trains as scheduled this morning but there may be delays on the exc acela express and others. they are trying to determine why a backhoe was on the tracks to begin with. they were killed when the train hit their equipment. an amtrak train was involved in another deadly collision yesterday. a train collided with a car in northern illinois. officials say the vehicle drove around the crossing gates and as hit by the train. one person was killed at that scene. none of the passengers or crew on the train were hurt. brussels airport is operating again this morning as the city tries to recover from last month's deadly terror attacks. the brussels airport re-opened for business yesterday for the first time since the march 22nd
suicide bombing attack. the blast damaged terminal still cannot be used. a temporary boarding and departure hall has been set up for passengers to drop off their bags. the partial re-opening is a sign of hope. >> this is a symbolical and emotional moment for the airport community. it's the first flight after the terrorist attack. we're turning a page, a page full of blood. we have to rebuild this airport and we will do so. >> american airlines has not yet given the okay for its planes to resume flights to brussels. the airline released a statement yesterday saying they're working to resume service later this week. american operates about 75% of the flights at philadelphia international airport. happening today, wichita state university is releasing u.s. national airline quality
ratings. this year's report shows flights are arriving on time and airlines are losing fewer bags but more passengers are complaining about their overall travel. now, complaints jumped 34% last year to the highest level since 2000.ç the march to victory for villanova could end in glory, we hope, at the national championship in houston. vai sikahema is live in the digital operations center. the wildcats face their final challenge or should we say challenges? >> yes, that's right, katy. the plural, challenges would be correct. the obvious obstacle for nova is the opponent north carolina. the wildcats and coach jay wright are also concerned with concentration. >> i'm proud of them, i really am. it's hard for me to keep focused and to watch 18 to 22-year-olds do this intelligently, it's really cool. we have to keep focus on this game and afterwards whatever

allentown road and north county line road to watch out for. our biggest problem will be the 30-minute delays for mass transit, the wilmington/newark line for septa is running back on a regular weekday service. we will see 30-minute delays and also sharing tracks with amtrak. tracks two and three are out of service. one and four, two tracks only providing service this morning which is going to be a big source for a lot of those. they will express to marcus hook. no outbound service from darby station to highland station also. another update when i come back in the 6:00 hour. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 4:51. a chilly, cloudy start this morning. wee watching for some showers. they will likely move in for philadelphia this afternoon. the temperatures by then will bç even warmer. nicely above freezing by 10 degrees in philadelphia at 42 degrees. have a little bit of an easterly
wind, that will shift. it becomes southwesterly and that wind will help us with the warmup. a clear view of the clouds from here at the nbc 10 studios. the clouds are producing some showers north and west. fortunately, the temperature's above freezing. pottstown 37 degrees. doylestown 36. right now in levittown, 40 degrees. further north and west, 30s above freezing, doylestown at 36 degrees. 36 in kintnersville where you may see a few snowflakes falling. it's falling into dry air. very little of this is actually reaching the ground. you may see a dusting farther to the north. closer in for allentown and reading. more likely you'll see rain drops, if even that first thing this morning. there is rain to the west. that will be arriving during the later morning and afternoon hours. 9:00 this morning, rain falling. just a minimal amount of rain. steadier rain is due in this afternoon. you can see it developing by lunch time today. that's the noontime hour.
the temperatures will take off ahead of the rain in philadelphia. 65 degrees at 3:00. but once the rain moves in, those temperatures start coming down. that rain will be here for the afternoon and evening commute. rain arrives during the afternoon. you might see a spotty shower or two this morning. there will be breaks of sunshine, especially in delaware and south jersey, 60s possible for philadelphia today. but tomorrow, a blast of cold. so long 60s. we're talking 30 degrees in the morning. with the wind blowing it will feel even colder. just 47 in the afternoon. rebound on wednesday, 55 degrees and 60s for thursday, even though they have more showers moving in. the temperatures start to come right back down. 50 degrees on friday with a residual shower during the day. then we'll get breezy conditions for the weekend, especially on saturday. another chilly one just 46, then back into the 50s sunday. >> all right, bill, thank you. a few minutes before 5:00. we continue to monitor developments from the deadly

april 4th, 1991 when a plane carrying pennsylvania senator john heinz collided with a helicopter over marion elementary school. the disaster included seven people including two first grade girls who were playing outside. a moment of silence is planned for today for staff members at the school. from our jersey shore bureau, a group of democratic lawmakers say they're ready to vote on the bill that would allow the state to take over atlantic city. several new jersey assembly members sent a letter to speaker vincent preate urging him to vote on the bill. he opposes the measure because it would allow the state to end collective bargaining agreements. the unions have told atlantic city mayor don guardian they will wait four weeks to get
paid. >> to what is a one-month paycheck instead of a paycheck every two weeks. what that does, it just helps us immediately, next week, with the necessary shutdown which does not have to occur. >> guardian says it's not a long-term solution but it will buy them some time to get the funding needed to keep the city running. a lot of us are planning to stay up late to watch it.
