this is just the beginning of what's to come. bill henley has the most accurate first alert weather forecast. >> first alert severe weather for the entire viewing area during the day today. especially later this morning. well into the afternoon. that's when we could see severe storms take shape with damaging winds and possibly hail, too. and heavy downpours. we've had so much rain, that could lead to a flood threat. just light rain. first batch of showers, nothing heavy about this at all. it's drying out in wilmington and dover. that's temporary. more showers and possibly thunderstorms taking place. heavy weather to the west and south this morning. grab your rain gear. you'll definitely need it. clouds are lingering over delaware and lehigh valley. look at new jersey with 45 degrees and winds out of the east at 15 miles an hour. it's a chilly rain falling in new jersey. for philadelphia and the suburbs, looking at cloudy skies. the temperature 48 degrees right now.

look at those winds out of the east at 15 miles an hour, 8:00. chance of showers and thunderstorms in philadelphia and that chance of thunderstorms at 11:00 this morning as well. in fact, you can plan on encountering some heavy weather at some point during the day today with afternoon temperatures peaking in the 50s and 60s and some chillier weather before we get to the weekend. i'll break it down neighborhood by neighborhood. hour by hour, you know when those heavy showers reach you when we come back in a few minutes. first, jessica boyington is watching wet roads this morning. >> cameras right around the schuylkill expressway off-ramp, earlier crash is now cleared. you can see that the roads are wet. definitely something you want to use caution with when driving all morning long. p.a. turnpike, construction. left lane of the westbound ramp near norristown is blocked with that construction project. he should be allowed to get through or able to get through for now. westbound and eastbound drive times look okay, 23 minutes from route 1 to valley forge.

bethlehem pike around mill road. vai and tracy? >> thank you, jessica. philadelphia police are searching for a man who shot a in the stomach and shin. officers were called at 57th and florence avenue. witnesses tell police the victim was arguing with a man who then fired six to seven shots. she's listed in stable condition. happening today, jurors will hear more testimony about the deadly shooting that killed a pennsylvania state trooper. >> eric frein is on trial for murder. state troopers described moments of care as they responded to that ambush just outside their blooming grove barracks. trooper brian dickson was killed. in court, fellow trooper robert golded he slapped the wounded dickson, calling his name saying, quote, i was looking for any signs of life, just looking into his eyes. there was nothing. troopers also talked about how they used body armor and police car to protect themselves as shots were fired around them.

frein faces the death penalty if convicted. happening today in north philadelphia, clergy and city officials will address concerns about gun violence, following a deadly shooting that killed three people and injured another. a $70,000 reward is being offered. stiles street monday not far from the school. surviving victim is not cooperating with the investigation. also new this morning, the man accused of setting off bombs in new york and at the jersey shore is asking the judge to move his trial to vermont. lawyers for ahmad rahimi say potential jurors may have been influenced by the media coverage of the case. he is charged with detonating a pipe bomb during a race in seaside park. and also planting bombs in new jersey. republicans don't seem to

have enough votes in place. neil gorsuch -- to put neil gorsuch on the court. mitch mcconnell may invoke the so-called nuclear option to he evercome a filibuster. the change would only a simple majority to confirm gorsuch. the president's chief strategist is now off the national security council. president trump removed steve bannon, reversing a decision some were critical of. some bannon was given a seat only gens as a check against then national security adviser michael flynn, the white house said, and now flynn is gone bannon is longer needed. attitude towards syria's leader has changed since a suspected chemical attack on civilians, killing dozens of people, including women and children. president trump said the images of the victims made a deep impression on him.

>> their deaths were an affront to humanity. these heinous actions by the assad regime cannot be tolerate tolerated. >> south jersey camden county is at odds federal immigration officials over the release of a prison inmate. ice officials say a guatemalan citizen was released despite request from feds to keep the man behind bars. i.c.e. says their detainer wasn't honored. camden county says they kept the man as long as they could. detainers do not nor will they serve as a binding document to undermine. planning for n upcoming day

without immigrants. the goal is to show important immigrants are to the national and local economy. the event is planned may 1st. rallying as a show of solidarity against the trump administration immigrants across the region took the day off for the event february 16th. penn state university trustee al lord says now he's no longer seeking a second term on the board after he made harsh comments about the sexual abuse victims of former assistant football coach jerry sandusky. in an e-mail lord said, quote, he is running out of sympathy for 35-year-old so-called victims with seven-digit net worth. after graham spaniard was convicted of child endangerment failing to act on reports that sandusky was abusing young boys. he is planning an appeal. gearing up for a ride to honor an elementary school teacher who was killed while

cycling. michael dair gentili was hit by a car in mays landing. tribute ride is planned for sunday morning. former pennsylvania governor ed rendell is endorsing kahn. rendell, former city d.a. said that the election gives the office a chance to move in a new direction. right now, there are eight candidates running for office, seven democrats and one republican. candidates are looking to row place current a. seth williams, facing federal bribery charges, exchanging his influence for gifts and cash. he has pled not guilty. 5:08. in my role as an amateur meteorologist -- and i mean amateur. i look over at the first alert radar and see green. >> when you see green that means umbrella today. right, bill? >> yes. that's the easy part.

the tough part will be dealing with the wind and the cold and the potential for severe weather today. we could see damaging winds with thunderstorms developing later this morning and this afternoon. no storms right now. you can see the wind is blowing and temperatures will drop into the 40s. it feels even colder. mt. holly, 39. very low 40s for philadelphia. temperature will climb. not going to get sunshine today. light rain drops right now. first line of showers is pushing through the area. you can see how quickly it's moving through. drying out to the south but that's a temporary drying. it's a large storm. you can see showers and thunderstorms are starting to fire up in north carolina. part of the same system that will drag into our area today and extends into the midwest. it's not just today. we'll see showers lingering into tomorrow. not looking good at all for the phillies game. 7:00 this morning.

rain falling and potentially heavy downpours. there's a slight chance we'll see activity 7:00. it's more likely to happen later this morning and into this afternoon. little bit of a break. next round of rainfall is more impressive. 11:00, 11:30 this morning, it swings through the philadelphia area, pushes into the lehigh valley, moving out by 1:30 in the afternoon. another break with some dreary conditions. wind will be blowing. we'll see some light rain. it won't be nice outside but no heavy rain at 1:30 this afternoon. watch that line to the west. that's what's potentially going to swing into the area during the mid afternoon hours. this could produce some severe weather and some very heavy downpours, especially in the lehigh valley, berks county and upper suburbs as well. not a great day today. we will make it up to 62 degrees. it will feel chilly. 49 degrees. the trend for saturday and sunday is a nice warm-up. next week monday and tuesday up

to 80 degrees. we still have to get through today and tomorrow. i'll break down how much rainfall you can expect and who will see the heaviest downpours when i come back in just ten minutes. >> bill, thank you. look forward to that. meanwhile, 5:11 right now. >> first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. what are you seeing? >> we look okay so far. roads are obviously wet right here. eastbound side, moving from the blue to the vine, 13 minutes. average speed still in the 60s. we're not seeing any massive problems on the roads right now. a crash in hatfield township, bethlehem pike around mill road. watch for that. penns grove over to new jersey, a water main break closing down a portion of route 48 in both directions, 295 and pennsville ashburn road. mass transit, still running on a modify schedule, new jersey transit on a holiday schedule and seeing ten-minute delays. too major right now.

it is quarter past 5:00 am on this thursday. right now, we're tracking storms across our area. this is a live look right now at center city on the right, which has seen some rain overnight. the storm also get worse, though, as the day goes on, bringing possible thunderstorms and strong winds.

meteorologist bill henley will have an update on that in a few minutes. you may see yellow caution tape in some philadelphia neighborhoods but it's not to mark off crime scenes. >> the displays are drawing attention to harassment against women. the special cat call crime scene tape is part of a public art project. the tape is popping up near schools, construction sights and other public places where women say they've been harassed. >> it's the fact that we're viewed as objects that you can just holler at. >> where are we in society that women can't walk down the street without people calling things at them? >> the campaign hopes to raise awareness about unwanted stares, comments and end the culture of rape. a pennsylvania man was arrested for drunk driving. you have to see what he was wearing in his mug shot. this is 44-year-old elwood gutshaw iii wearing a "drunk lives matter" t-shirt.

police say his blood alcohol content was about 2 1/2 times the state's legal limit. his next court date is in late may. a mercer county teenager has been accepted to stanford university after writing #blacklivesmatter 100 times on his application. take a look. essay question asks what matters to you and why? the tweet has received thousands of likes and retweets. stanford confirmed his acceptance but declined to discuss his application. he was also accepted into princeton and yale. 17 minutes past 5:00 am. and we've got light rain that we're dealing with this morning. driving in, you have your windshield wipers on a little bit. but later today -- >> yeah, later today. that's why we issued a first alert. these storms could be severe. let's get you updated with bill henley. bill? >> the setup in the atmosphere

could produce severe storms in our area, especially later this morning and this afternoon. what we're dealing with right now is a chilly rainy morning. you can see very light rain falling here. and it's falling in wilmington. look closely. that's the tarp covering the infield. opening game. home opener for the blue rocks is this evening. not looking great for this evening. more showers are in store. and some gusty winds, too. the winds during the day will be coming off the ocean. winds to 23 miles an hour. steady winds. the gusts at the ocean could hit 45 miles an hour. in philadelphia, we could get gusts to 25 miles an hour. add to that for the rain, it will make for a chilly day most of the day. we'll be in the low 50s at 10:00. we'll get heavy downpours later in the morning. that will drop the temperatures. little bit of a break. going into the afternoon, even though we'll have warmer temperatures, there's still a threat of more showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening hours. we'll peak right around 60

degrees at 6:00 this evening. temperatures take a dive. tonight into tomorrow will be colder than today. rain that we're dealing with so far, just light rain that's moved through our area, pushing off to the north. we'll get a dry several hours here. there are some more showers just to our south. you see the thunderstorm activity so far is to our west. so that first round of thunderstorms is missing us. but the potential for more showers and thunderstorms is going to come as this -- doesn't look like much right now. this little bit of shower activity is going to be firing up. and it's heading toward delaware. you can see the first showers already at sussex county, moving into southwest kent county. there's more on the way. we've issued a first alert for the entire viewing area during the day today. especially later this morning and this afternoon. severe storms, potentially damaging winds, maybe some hail. threat of heavy downpours which could lead to more flooding. we've had so much rain lately. by tomorrow morning we may still have some showers in the area by tomorrow morning.

this is what we're looking at storm totals. just under half an inch at south jersey. as you move inland, more than 1 1/3 inches in philadelphia. p pottstown and allentown, we're likely to see potential for more flooding. by the weekend, things are looking nice, sunny and warmer, too. perfect timing for the cherry blossom festival. it's what we have to get through today and tomorrow that won't be so nice. shower thunderstorms in philadelphia. the wind will be blowing. lingering showers for the phillies game, 49 degrees. the high will feel colder than that. we clear out this weekend. look at the warming trend. near 70, 80 monday and tuesday. showers bring temperatures down wednesday. back to normal for thursday, friday and saturday with highs in the 60s. >> all right, bill. 5:20. bill is so humbled, he hasn't
