record-breaking mission. well, good tuesday morning. we begin with the busiest day at the polls for the entire primary season. >> it is super tuesday. voters in 12 states are casting their ballots and a treasure trove of delegates are up for grabs. hillary clinton is holding a commanding lead over bernie sanders in the latest national poll. on the republican side, a protest and a scuffle erupted at a donald trump rally as he trades more insults, trump soared in a new poll jumping ahead of his rivals marco rubio and ted cruz by more than 30 points. >> it's "your voice, your vote" and we have live team coverage. lana zak standing by in washington, d.c. but we'll get started with stephanie ramos who is in virginia where polls open this morning at 6:00. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning to you, kendis and reena. you got it. it is super tuesday and voters can cast their ballots starting

as soon as they close in 12 states we could effectively have a nominee for both parties. super tuesday is here. the biggest voting day of the year leading up to the general election. voters in a dozen states and a u.s. territory will go to the polls today with 1,610 delegates at stake. hours before they open the candidates zig sagging across and holding rallies trying to grab last-minute votes. >> let me be very clear to the men and women of texas, i will not compromise the way -- >> reporter: ted cruz hoping to win big in his home state talking religious liberty. >> you know what they say about men with small hands. >> reporter: his barrage of insults against donald trump subsiding by the end of the day but at a trump rally in virginia, tension. >> get them out. >> reporter: a large group of student protesters marched out and as they passed a photographer from "time"

no single candidate could win the nomination today, however, for donald trump and hillary clinton, this could be their opportunity to really pull ahead. for the gop, the state to watch is texas. ted cruz's home state where he has a slim lead in a recent poll. it is the biggest delegate prize of the day and experts say it is a must win for cruz. there are 595 total delegates up for grabs in the gop. more than a quarter come from texas and there are many more delegates at stake for the democrats. 1,015 delegates are up for grabs. bernie sanders will likely win his home state of vermont but a recent poll has clinton with a slight lead in neighboring massachusetts. for sanders to keep this rice close he needs to win in the south but six of those, alabama, arc, a, georgia, texas, tennessee and virginia have significant black populations, an electorate in which clinton has strong support. and if sanders continues to be

was this past weekend in south carolina, well, it will be virtually impossible for him then to catch up to clinton. reena, kendis. >> all right, a long day ahead for all seven presidential campaigns. we move on. the state department released its final batch of hillary clinton's e-mails while she was secretary of state. >> she's been under fire for using a private e-mail server at least 2100 e-mails that she sent or were received contained classified material. none were marked classified at the time which clinton has repeated ly repeatedly cited in her defense. the fbi is investigating whether any laws were broken. stay with abc news all day for super tuesday coverage. our political team will be here tonight at 10:00 eastern with the latest and tomorrow, be sure to tune in to "america this morning" for the results. >> let's take a look at the super tuesday weather. it could impact the voting. march is definitely coming in like a lion. you can see the storm bringing

>> as much as 6 inches expected in wisconsin and michigan. although the worst should miss chicago and detroit. well now to a wild chase and standoff in southern california. dragging on for hours with children in the car. police responding to a domestic incident chased a driver in a hummer across at least three freeways in orange county. the man's girlfriend and his two kids were in the suv and she had a restraining order finally released unharmed nearly six hours after the ordeal started. the first time the u.s. or any country admitted this, the pentagon is using cyberweapons against isis and stepping up the digital warfare. the gold is to disrupt the ability of isis to communicate, control its forces and manage finances. defense secretary ash carter says it may force the extremists to use older technologies that are even easier to disrupt. it's now just a matter of hours until scott kelly leaves the international space station for earth. he's been in space for nearly a

kelly handed over command of the station to another astronaut on monday. now, later he and two russian crew members will ride a spacecraft back to earth. kelly says being up there so long required a lot of help. >> spaceflight is the biggest team sport there is and it's, you know, incredibly important that we all work together to make what is seemingly impossible possible. >> kelly and the russian will land tonight in kazakhstan. when he returns to houston kelly will quickly undergo tests with his twin brother mark. they will gauge the effect that all that time in space had on his body. >> they're not sure whether it willic weeks or months for him to recuperate. apple winning a major court case against the fbi. >> plus, breaking down. erin andrews in tears on the stand. her emotional testimony talking about being secretly filmed. caught on camera.

not exactly what you want to see in your neighborhood gas station. a shuttle bus at the pumps on fire. the driver had noticed that it was overheating and pulled in to get help. besides the bus, gas pumps and a large chevron sign here in san francisco were destroyed. one firefighter had minor injuries. well, a teen accused in the latest school shooting will be in court this morning charged with trying to kill two fellow students. investigators say the 14-year-old opened fire in the school cafeteria in middleton, ohio. hitting the two students, two away. the school which had practiced

into lockdown and the sheriff says he knows what's behind the shooting but he wouldn't release details. at the supreme court, gasps from the audience after justice clarence thomas spoke. it's the first time in ten years that thomas has said anything during an oral argument. the court and it wasn't just one question but a string of them in an exchange that lasted several minutes. thomas said in the past that he relies on written briefs and doesn't need to ask questions. well, apple has won a legal victory in its latest battle against the government. a judge ruled that apple can't be compelled to help the fbi to unlock an iphone in a narcotics case and is ruling the judge said he found no limit on how far the government would go to require companies to violate deeply held american values. the justice department plans to appeal. well, that ruling has no effect on the battle involving apple and the fbi. when it comes to unlocking the iphone of one of the san bernardino terrorists.

biggest of the decade. with total accumulation of up to three feet. roads will be shut down indefinitely. and schools are closed. campbell's soups go great with a cold and a nice red. made for real, real life. watch this close call for a fedex driver in southern louisiana during a powerful tornado. she spotted the funnel cloud in her rearview mirror and then tried to take shelter inside a hardware store but the door was locked and barricaded with sandbags so the driver hid behind a soda machine outside the store. it fell over and the tornado all but destroyed the store. but the fedex driver is fine. well, drivers could run into more severe weather this morning from that same part of louisiana. up until the appalachians, just wet roads further north. heavy snow awaits them in the northern midwest this morning and in the northern rockies. another storm is moving into the northwest.

delays likeliest in chicago, detroit and memphis. the virginia police officer skilled on her first day on patrol will be remembered today during funeral services. >> last night dozens lined the route as ashley guidon's body was taken from the funeral home to the memorial chapel. an army skth assigned to the pentagon confessed to killing her when she responded to a domestic call at his house. erin andrews broke down on the witness tan during her lawsuit against a nashville hotel. andrews was videotaped by a stalker. that went viral and in the process humiliated her. she described in court the moment she first saw it. >> i saw it for two seconds and i was like, oh, my god then i shut it down. >> andrews went on to say she became all but dysfunctional for several months after the video went online and wants $75 million from the hotel which she

he was convicted and served 20 months in prison. the controversial contraceptive essure will be given the fda's most serious warning but it won't be pulled from the market. essure has drawn house of complaints from women who said the pain and bleeding they suffered was so severe they were required surgery to remove the device. the fda is requiring manufacturer bayer to conduct more studies on the risks. and news about another controversial product for women. the libido drug adyi says it only modest i increases sexual satisfaction. given the side effects they conclude the benefits of taking it weren't worth taking it. george kennedy has died. he is best remembered for his supporting role in coot cool hand luke" for which he won an oscar but the actor was in dozens of other major films during his 50 year career and although he usually played a tough guy he was one of the best

george kennedy a world war ii veteran died of natural causes at 91. boy, this was certainly an detroit. a high-speed chase of an allegedly stolen u-haul van began on an interstate highway and moved to local roads and continued even after the truck's tires blew out on obstacles that police had actually placed in the roads. finally a deputy banged into the van with his squad car. the truck came to a halt and the driver was under arrest. word of a contract extension for tom brady has new england peyton manning fans cheering. reports indicate the 38-year-old quarterback has signed a two-year deal with the team. the extension is said to give the patriots significantly more room under the nfl's salary cap. now, before the extension, brady was due to make about $15 million for the coming season. well, brady still has a couple of months before he gets back into action. as for the guys who are in action last night, we get the highlights from espn.

it's the beginning of the workweek. we'll build up our intensity as this goes on. >> cleveland cavaliers need to build up theirs. they lost three of four and james took a day off sunday. they got absolutely trashed in washington. that's what j.r. smith said. james feeding dellavedova and cavs tied the game at 94 then tristan thompson, big shot there. the indiana coach wanted offense to follow. didn't get it. cavaliers up by two. george hill puts up the shot but check out thompson with the big block and contributes at both ends of the court. cavaliers pumped up to get the win, 100-96. 33 for james. >> stan and i will play all five days this week. this is the thunder and kings and have to wonder what kind of bounce-back the thunder would have after getting bounced by steph curry. dave and buster's before he hit that.
