good morning and welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm gayle guyardo. >> and i'm gene ramirez. boy, it is cold outside. and some of the coldest weather so far this winter, a freeze warning is in effect until 9:00 this morning for parts of the bay area. that includes citrus and hernando county. many people waking up to 30 and 40-degree temperatures out
let's go straight to leigh spann. chilly, chilly, chilly start. >> yes, it is. if you thought yesterday was cold, get ready to grab another layer to keep you warm this morning because in citrus and hernando counties, that's where we have the potential to drop below freezing. right now, 45 in tampa. 33 in lakeland. 46 in sarasota. and the perspectiving for, anywhere from five to 10 degrees colder than yesterday morning. and yesterday felt cold. so the sky just as blue and gorgeous. when you look outside, just as cool as yesterday as well, a high ofen 63 degrees. and tonight, yet another cold night. officially in tampa we drop to 32. in weather and traffic on the 8s at 4:80, i tell when you the rain and warm temperatures return. and leslee is here with the cold commute.
we have issues on the road. let's take a look in tampa. what you need to know before you head out the door. northbound on 275, we have got overnight construction that has kennedy actually blocked. so off the howard franklin bridge, you will have to exit kennedy boulevard. you can get back on the interstate or dale mabry. if you're coming off the veterans expressway to 275 northbound, not going to happen, you will be directed on to kennedy. alou for about 15 extra minutes for this detour. i will let you know as soon as it reopens. back to gene and gayle. >> thank you. right now, a suspect robber is in the hospital. -- a suspected robber is in the hospital. a tampa store clerk shot him when police claim he pulled a knife and threatened the clerk. and today we could get a look
>> reporter: police say the 22- year-old remains in the hospital. the clerk who pulled the trigger, he is doing okay. can you tell us you're okay? >> okay. everything is good. i'm good. >> reporter: he is still shaken after nearly being attacked. police say the knife-welder thief is a 22-year-old. police say he tried to rob the place. the clerk's brother raced to the store when he heard shots had been fired. >> the guy walked in with a knife and wanting to stab my brother and rob the store. and my brother shot him. >> reporter: eagle 8 hd captured a roped off crime scene while detectives talked to the witnesses. forensics collected evidence inside the store. police say the clerk had the gun nearby under the counter. >> the the clerk took out the
the suspect has been taken to the hospital with possible life- threatening injuries. >> reporter: family thankful he was quick to protect himself. >> i don't blame him because it was a robbery. >> reporter: he is just grateful he is able to go home to loved ones tonight. we know your wife was concerned. >> my family is worried about me. thank god i'm safe. >> reporter: records show that he was arrested in 2012 on drug and grand theft charges. again, he is still in the hospital, possibly with life- threatening injuries. police say no charges have been filed against the clerk. news channel 8. >> thank you. new this morning, two people shot in fort pierce. a 23-year-old and 27-year-old were shot multiple times. this happened in the area of north 27th street and avenue k. they are in serious condition this morning.
witnesses but are asking for help from the public. and the search is on for the man who grabbed a usf student and kissed more. this happened as the student was unloading her car. police identified a person of interest. and officers are now warning students to be on alert and report any suspicious activity. heart breaking developments this morning in an amber alert case we followed for months now. investigators believe the search is over for a little boy. this after authorities found a body in a wooded area in jacksonville, just nine miles from where he was reportedly missing. and now his mother and her boyfriend will likely face additional criminal charges. lindsey mastis is joining us now live from the tampa news center. >> reporter: the this morning, this new development is trending on our website, web florida the mandating his mother helped lead investigators to the remains and he is the same man that
six months ago. investigators call him the main suspect in the death and disappearance. he initially claim his car was stolen with the toddler inside but investigators didn't buy it. he has been in jail for child negligent, lying to police and tampering with evidence. and just before investigators found the remain, he appeared in court to waive his right to a speedy trial. investigators are appalled at what happened to the little boy. >> that little boy didn't need to be discarded like a piece of trash. we are able to take what we believe to be him from being disposed like that in the hopes that he can spend his eternity in somewhere that's peaceful and not somewhere that is basically a garbage heap. >> reporter: his mother also faces charges for child negligent and lying to police. she is taking a please, sir deal.
whether he will be allowed to testify against the boyfriend. investigators want justice for the little boy and the next step is confirming that the remains are in fact his. we will stay on top of this case and let you know whether the state's attorney files new charges. gayle -- >> all right. thank you so much. we look forward to updates. happening today, governor rick scott will give his annual state of the state address at 11:00 this morning in tallahassee. governor scott is expected to discuss economic developments and tax cuts and he is expected to highlight job creation. the governor's address kicks off the 2016 legislative session. and president barack obama will deliver his 7th and final state of the union address. that is happening tonight. he is expected to outline his goals for his final year in office. one involves tightening the nation's gun laws.

it is the coldest air we've seen so far of the season. i mean, considering that december was the hottest on record, this is what it's supposed to feel like in january, right? we do have the freeze warning for citrus and hernando counties until 9:00 this morning. in fact, another cold night tonight. and they have already issued a freeze watch. make sure to take care of the pets and plants. and despite sunshine today, just like yesterday, pure blue sky, we don't warm up that quickly. mid-40s at 9:00 a.m. and 63 in the afternoon. and then temperatures falling of course very quickly again this evening. so right after you get off work, my shoe of approval on a run time for the gasparilla distant classic is for an evening run. low average thursday. but thursday night and friday, i'm expecting a strong storm
let's check in on traffic on the 8s because we know it's chilly out there. and we have overnight construction that's going the to pull you off of the roadway. so probably when the heater just kicks in. in tampa, traveling northbound on the howard franklin bridge and coming into tampa, you will be directed to kennedy boulevard and that is because lanes are closed on 275. it should be wrapping up in about an hour or so. and it affects off courtney campbell or the veterans and then connecting to memorial highway. you can go to kennedy but you cannot go to northbound 275. so about a 15 minute delay by the time you go through the lights and get back to the interstates. a live look, it's hard to see, but there's the construction. that's eight. a back to gene and gayle. >> thank you. a terrorist group's money goes up in smoke. >> how the u.s. is taking aim
this morning university of alabama and its fans are celebrating. the crimson tide rolled over clemson the to win the college football national championship. alabama erupted into cheers as the team beat the tigers 45-40. the players doused coach nick saban with the tradition thal cooler. this is alabama's fourth if national championship in the last seven years. the game is created quite the buzz on social media. >> reporter: yeah, people celebrating from their couches last night. in fact, saying not just about this specific game but about college football in general, it's made a come back. one saying, that football game was complete crazy cakes. whatever that means. and danny says, what a game. pa exactly what a national championship game should be. saying my grandad would be proud of his crimson tide tonight. and then the two most talked

and now, typical winter day for us. now, tomorrow, partly cloudy and on the cool side as well. but the long range forecast because we will start to increase the rain chances late thursday. much better rain chance, possibly even thunderstorms coming through friday. leslee, how about weather and traffic on -- how about traffic on the 8s? northbound on 275 away from pinellas county off the howard franklin bridge, approaching into the tampa area, look at the cones on the roadway. you are taken off at kennedy boulevard. and that's because two 275 is closed between kennedy all the way up. and that will affect you off memorial highway. so just allow for that extra time. and should be wrapping up in about 30 minutes or so. that's a look at weather and traffic on the 8s. apple is introducing a new feature that could help us get a good night's sleep. i like the sound of that. >> ahead, we will explain how it works.
