he instead attended a rally to raise money for veterans. one day late, a carnival cruise is set to leave today fog. some were stranded on the ship and others were stranded in tampa waiting on the ship to disembark on the next trip. let's go to meteorologist bryan ben it in for leigh today. >> the boat goers don't need to worry with the fog because the fog is history. right now, temperatures right around 52 rise in tampa. -- 52 degrees in tampa. we have breezy conditions as well. winds out of northwest around 10 miles per hour and 15 miles per hour in lakeland. so a little breezy and cool this morning as you head out the door. satellite and radar picture showing the rain is history, a few lingering clouds but even those are exiting. so today a, a nice looking day temperature of 64 degrees. and now coming up, we will have a look at the hour-by-hour

so today, good looking day, the rain is gone. >> thank goodness. traffic looks good. still out there, not perfect. we have a couple little issues going on but overall, a wonderful drive. six minutes on the howard franklin bridge. and four on the gandy. look at sarasota, no overnight construction slowing you down. university to clark at this point, roughly a six minute drive time. and let's look at traffic here. you can see over there to the right on the right shoulder and right lane south, this is 275 at 38th avenue south, we do construction. cones on the roadway but no delays. hardly any vehicles out. everybody is sleeping in. that's weather and traffic. now back to gene and gayle. thanks. happening today, a cruiseship delayed by mother nature gets back on track. >> heavy fog kept the ship from coming into the port of tampa and that caused big problems for passengers trying to get on and off the ship. >> yeah, 8 on your side's ryan

and passengers who were supposed to leave yesterday are peak waking up in tampa this morning and -- are waking up in tampa this morning and some don't seem to mind. >> reporter: exactly. the ship was delayed coming back to tampa so yesterday's trip is going to leave today. and that meant some people spent an extra half day onboard until the ship docked here late last night. and the carnival paradise was supposed to turn around yesterday afternoon and head to sea for a four-day cruise with all new passengers and now they won't leave until later today and that cruise will simply spend three days at sea and won't stop in mexico. a couple arrived late last night after being parked at sea for around 12 hours and they were okay with it. >> it was fine though. not a problem. we take it as it comes. >> reporter: good attitude there. allen and faye of lakeland got off the ship last night. others spent the night onboard and will leave this morning.

cruise line will give the passengers delayed today 50% off this cruise and half off a future cruise. and gayle, of course those onboard an extra half day probably won't complain or didn't complain too much because they could enjoy more food, drinks and entertainment. back to you. >> yeah, if they like to cruise, that sounds like a great deal. thanks, ryan. this morning we are getting a look at the moment a tornado hit delray beach. take a look at the video from the surveillance video of a church. the national weather service report the twitter packed winds up to 85 miles per hour. and the storm uprooted trees, knocked down power lines and tore up some roofs. no one was hurt though. right now the search is on for an attemped rapist in tampa. take a look at the sketch of what police believe the act tear looks like. investigators report the woman was on her porch when a man grabbed her. the woman screamed, a motion

an update to an 8 on your side investigation. liars face the law. a spring hill couple now know at least part of the punishment they'll face for concealing a sinkhole from a family that bought their home. the judge sentenced them to five years probation including six months of house arrest. they'll also have to pay $15,000 each in fines and serve 1,000 hoursover community service. the judge must still decide how much they'll pay the victims. today the city of lakeland will take up the issue of red light cameras. there are questions about whether the cameras are reducing the number of accidents at busy intersections. and now initial data in lakeland indicated accidents decreased, however new analysis shows the number of accidents at some intersections actually increased. excitement is building in tampa for the 2016 gasparilla pirate invasion. oh, yeah. it's an exciting day in the city of tampa. >> it really is.

festivities kick-off tonight and the big parade starts tomorrow. and thousands of people will crowd bay shore. and that's where our lindsey mastis is live this morning. you have company this early morning. >> reporter: i do have company, gayle. over here, we have a couple of crews this morning. and we are live along bay shore. and you might remember right around here is where the pirate ship is usually docked. well, right now, there are stands there instead. the ship is getting prepared for its big invasion tomorrow. and of course, it will come through this way and end up over here at the tampa convention center. and now there's a lot going on and the festivities begin tonight. i want you to look at the screen. now the pre-invasion celebration starts at 6:00 at curtis hickton water front park. you will need tickets for that. and saturday the street festival begins at 10:00 a.m. and there's a lot of food including my favorite, hand-

the big invasion begins tomorrow morning at 11:30. and the parade starts at 2:00. it goes on for hours. when it wraps up around 5:30, you can head to the water front park and enjoy live music until 10:00. and i am here with a couple of crews including the rough riders. and billy hogan, you have been doing this for a number of years and you participate in the parade. >> i have been doing it personally for 12 years and saturday we are looking forward to having most of us out here. there will be over 500 of us, six vehicles and four floats and a couple jeeps and looking forward to having a party with a half million of our closest friends screaming for beads. >> reporter: this one lights up which is so cool. and you guys have all your beads out here as well. of course, there's a lot to do. we have all the information on our website, wfla.com. and including the road closures so you can figure out how the to get down here. you won't want to miss that.

a bay area charity is helping the troubled town of flint, michigan deal with a water emergency. they collected cases of water flint. on the way to michigan, the

the delivery comes as the city deals with contaminated pipes that exposed thousands to poisonous lead. happening today, a court hearing for a chicago police officer accused of a murder. a status hearing is scheduled for jason van dyke. the chicago police officer is charged with murder in the death of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald. in the confrontation caught on camera, prosecutors claim the officer shot the black teenager 16 times. and this morning, only a handful of protesters remain in a wildlife refuge in oregon. the fbi is negotiating with them in hopes of ending the month-long armed stand-off. the fbi released video that shows the deadly confrontation between some of the armed protesters in a traffic stop. it shows a vehicle trying to maneuver around an fbi road block. during the confrontation, agents shot and killed a man. they claim he reached for his gun. you've got to see this video here. a strange sinkhole pattern,

shutting down a highway in oregon this morning two. huge sinkholes opened up on the same street. the larger one here took out most of the lanes of highway 101. and then the other sinkhole right across the street, both opened up in a short period of time. all right, it was like a scene out of the video game "grand theft auto." check this out. police officers rushed into a cracker barrel restaurant following a vehicle pursuit. look at this camera right here. the entire incident caught on camera. the suspects they were after were wanted for a violent past. >> put your hands up! right now! >> put your hands up! >> let us see your hands! >> it's hard to see the suspect because he was hiding behind a display. and police were able to apprehend him and take him into custody. customers rushed out of the restaurant in fear but no one was hurt.

violent crimes over the past month. a bank manager in north carolina is getting a lot of credit this morning for preventing a robbery. and it was all caught on surveillance video. take a look here. you see the suspect run up to the door ready to rob the place but the bank manager holding on to the door for dear life decided not today, buddy. eventually the suspect gave up and ran off. >> that's good instinct. well 8 on your side for gasparilla 2016. hundreds of thoughs of people are expected -- hundreds of thousands of people are expected to line bay shore boulevard. >> there are some challenges parade goers may face. leslee lacey has a look at how we can make sure a good time doesn't turn into a tragic one. >> reporter: absolutely. gasparilla is known for the pirates, the floats, and of course the beads. but some parade goers have a little too much fun getting intoxicated. so this morning i'm sharing some information to keep us all safe on the roads.

remember a dui can cost you thousands of dollars and it can affect your employment and it can raise your insurance rates. more importantly, it could affect the lives of others. remember, have a plan if you plan on drinking. transportation. they are rolling out more buses, the downtown trollly is free and the streetcar will take you from ybor city to downtown tampa. there are so many ways to get around, it's not worth it anymore. there's so many ride sharing things. >> and i love the boat sharing. >> it's fantastic. if you want to go out on the boat, you still want to drink but be safe, you can shop around. they'll pick you up at the dock and many times they have their own captain. so it's affordable as well. >> and you can experience it from a whole different view. >> that's a great way to experience it. >> reporter: and aaa is not doing their tow to go service. >> probably hard to get the tow trucks around the crowds. >> yeah, just plan something and be safe out there. thank you.

let's get a check on weather and traffic on the 8s. >> well, gene, we're looking at dry weather today and it has been rainy weather over the last two days. check this out. tampa international, we've had 2.5 inches of rain on wednesday and thursday. a typical january, the entire 2.2. so more rain in two days than we typically receive in the entire month. so not just your imagination, it has been on the soggy side. that's all over now. the front has passed through and the rain is over. and the clouds start to move out during the day too. the big picture right now, if you plan on travel, most of the country looking good and snow showers right now in ohio and west virginia and pennsylvania and some decent rain in northern california and oregon as well. but that is about it. this high pressure will be the main feature this week. right now, we're on the eastern side of the high which means today cool temperatures topping

by the latter part of the weekend, the high pressure will be in the atlantic which means temperatures approaching 80 degrees into monday. so this morning, just a few clouds and 51 degrees. this afternoon, sunshine and 64. and gasparilla saturday looking great, 68 degrees and partly cloudy and dry. so nice weekend in store and >> all right. the roadways out there, folks. coming in and out of hernando county. looks great through pasco on i- 75 and into tampa. in fact the brandon area up to speed on highway 60 as well. we've got a good drive in downtown brooksville. and let's take a live look at traffic out here, 275 southbound right at 38th avenue south, still a little bit of construction there. over in the two right lanes. but traffic is so light, it won't impede your travel at all. that's weather and traffic on the 8s.

good morning. it is 5:28 a.m. and we have temperatures hovering right around the lower 50s. so a little cooler this morning. you might need a light jacket. big monkey in crystal beach right now is reporting 52 degrees. satellite and radar picture showing the rain has cleared and now we're waiting for the clouds to move out as well which they'll do today. good deal of shine and a high of 64. how about traffic, leslee. i can see clearly now, the rain is gone.
