. good morning and thanks for watching news channel 8 today. i'm gayle guyardo. >> and i'm gene ramirez. our top stories this friday morning, today is the first in a series of job fairs to find substitute teachers in polk county. there will be seven job fairs in total this month of february. 8 on your side is checking with the school district to find out how many positions are open and how this could impact our kids. >> a major data breach at a

now current and former students are left in limbo. hackers stole 63,000 social security numbers from the university of central florida. the school is planning to send out letters to alert victims and will offer a year of free credit monitoring. we're waking up to cooler weather this morning across the bay area. temperatures down in the 40s and 50s. but with the wind, it feels a lot cooler than that. meteorologist leigh spann has a look at the cool down. >> as we've been talking about all morning, the temperatures are dropping quickly and will continue to do so for another two hours. we just dropped to 48 degrees in plant city in tampa. lakeland, you're at 46 degrees. we're down to 49 in clear water. the colder air is spreading south. you go further into the southern areas like north port, you're at 54 degrees. certainly a huge difference from yesterday. anywhere from 20 to 25 degrees colder than we were at 6:00 a.m. yesterday. the wind cuts right through. it is coming out of the north bringing the cooler air in.

15 to 20 miles an hour but gusts getting up to 25, 30 miles an hour all behind a cold front. notice the clearing skies. despite the sunnier afternoon, a high of 61. that is 10 degrees below average. i look at the hour by hour forecast of this chilly friday. at least it will be sunny. >> that is a positive. >> it is windy too. on the sky way bridge, use caution as you move across it. >> plant city trashgs says 39 highway 39 into downtown tampa, roughly 32 minutes. traffic looks good coming all the way from lakeland from plant city and ybor, we're looking good. a collision is tying up lanes on packinghouse road but no injuries involved. a lot of activity throughout.

location in lakeland where the job fair is taking place and adrienne. i know today starts the big recruitment push. >> that is exactly right. the district will not tell us exactly how many sub positions are open but we do know that this educational staffing company kelly services is hosting seven job fairs in february. the first one is today. now, i did get an e-mail back from the spokesperson telling me they're not sure how many subs they need because it fluctuates on a daily basis. so i really am trying to get a range for you so we can better understand this issue. i did check and substitute teachers in polk county make about $80 a day. i want to know how bad this years. that is the information i'm looking for right now. we listed the job fairs on our website, and what

more than $80,000. he wants a pay back pardon from the feds accusing the school of lying about qualified instructors and industry standard learning tools. he claims he taught himself through youtube videos and explains the school didn't deliver on an in field job placement promise. >> what the art institute considers the field for game, art, and design includes game stop, office depot. >> that is where he claims they placed him making copys for eight bucks an hour. he tells 8 on your side he has recruiting catalogs to prove the promises. he joins thousands of former students nationwide claiming fraud at for profit colleges but some current students aren't so sure. >> the school can only do so much and you as a student need to, you know, pretty much need to do the rest. >> when you sign up to pay for, that you're obligated to pay it back. >> the art institute parent company has agreed with the government on more transparent recruiting and disclosure

not an admission of wrong doing. the u.s. department of education continues investigating claims. more than 1,000 of these claims were already paid out. now, just five of those were related to schools here in florida but what is tricky here is having that proof because you sign up for these things. you go through the years of schooling. you didn't keep the catalog where the promises were made, you can't prove it, you're on the hook for the loan sgland you probably sign -- and you probably sign up thinking you'll have the money and career to pay for the $80,000 nugget. >> not with an $8 office job from office depot. an 8 on your side consumer alert. customers a bay area gas station need to monitor their bank accounts. authorities found another skimming device. this time at a marathon gas station in sarasota. a department of agriculture inspector discovered the device. investigators don't know how long it had been there. the last time the pump was checked was nearly a year ago.

weekend there is a no drone zone for a boat racing event. organizers of the river regatta are worried it could pose a danger to speed boat drivers and concerned that they could get under way of helicopters looking for manatees. the event will come to a stop before it is removed. it is 6:08 on this friday morning heading into the weekend with nice, cool weather. >> we break back out the coat and we hit 88 degrees. but yeah, the temperature is falling. let's go hour by hour. 47 degrees. but despite sunny skies. a cool breeze will really make it tough for us to warm up. notice, we barely make it in the 50s by 10 a.m.. it is around 54 by the time you're taking your lunch break. 61 in the afternoon. a lot of kids are heading off to the fair today. they need to grab the coat for sure.

so, again, there are seven chances for you to get hired in february. i put all of those dates as well as the qualifications on definitely a story we'll stay on top of because we really want to know, is this different from years past? is this sub shortage really critical to our kids? we'll be sure to let you know. >> it can affect what happens in the class roochlt thank you. broward county -- classroom. thank you. broward county is the newest on the list for the zika emergency. governor rick scott wants the cdc to take action before the virus spreads. there are a dozen cases reported in florida. the governor wants the cdc to provide 1,000 test kits because right now the state only has enough to test 500 people. 4,000 more kids are ordered by the health department -- 4,000 more kits are ordered by the health department. >> we'll be in more communication with health

we're prepared to prevent the spread of the zika virus in florida. >> the public health emergency impacts five counties including right here in hillsborough. carnival cruise line is trying to keep its passengers safe by offering cruise credits for those concerned about the zika virus. the cruise line tells 8 on your side that they're not aware of reported cases of the virus on their ships but carnival is offering future cruise credits and chances for travellers to reschedule or reroute their trips. this morning, thousands of ucf students, alumni and employees will soon learn whether hackers stole their personal information. >> the university of central florida is sending out letters about a major data breach. lindsey mastis is following this story live for us from the morning alert center. what kind of information are we talking about here? >> good morning, the university of central florida admits a hacker got access to 63,000 social security numbers. the president of the university

about it last month but they're just now sending out letters to let victims know. they should start arriving next week. the school insists the hacker did not get any credit card information, financial or medical records and no glades are affected. the school is using -- grades are affected. the school is using a national firm to investigate and are working to improve the online security to keep this from happening again. the university is offering a one free year of credit monitoring and identity protection. we have the story on our facebook page. be sure to share it with friends and family, especially anyone you know with connections to ucf. gene? >> okay. i bet some of these victims wish they would have known sooner. you can follow the morning alerts every day on facebook and twit yefrment search eight alert. -- twitter. search #8alert. a bill to end alimony has a few more obstacles to over come.

ryan hughes is live at clinic on little road in new port richey. people have been lining up since before you arrived and you were there before 4:00 a.m. >> we were here at four and there were already people in line. i talked to a doctor, he said some people came out at 7:30 yesterday morning for the free clinics. dr. vincent monticello has helped people in need of fillings, extraction cleaning for the past decade and and a half. dentistry from the heart is a national non-profit with a simple mission to help people smile. data is to help people who can't afford expensive dental work or don't have the insurance to get it done. i spoke to a woman and her son. they are both here, ready to see a doctor, soon. listen here. >> there are so many people uninsured and it touches my heart to know that people are willing to do this for people

two new york police officers are in the hospital after getting shot. they were monitoring a housing complex when an armed man confronted them. one man was shot in the face, the other shot in the stomach. the gunman committed suicide. a veteran's x-games biker is dead. dave mirra committed suicide at 41 years old. his bodiway found in his truck in north carolina. authorities report the rider was visiting friends in the area. mirra was one of the most deck raided athlete -- decorated athletes in the x-games. a man stranded on the side of a mountain was rescued and it was caught on camera first responders propelled down from toy truck danger for kids the man hovering hundreds of feet in the air. officials report the man was homeless and jumped a fence to set-up camp when he realized he couldn't get out.

>> driverless vehicles are all the hype. in one small iowa ton town, a driverless atv had a mind of its own. watch as the atv barrelled down in the parking lot and did back flips. the men handling the atv were able to stop the vehicle from handling the power pole. you can see the back of this building got a good beating. >> i was like, holy toledo. that went up. the other doesn't show it in such good view. >> word got around fast in this small town of 348 people. some are wondering if casper was looking to go on a joy ride. no one was hurt. >> casper is a friendly ghost. this ghost is out of control. >> he likes to ride. red is the color of the day. you'll notice a number of people wearing the color. >> it is a way to spark a conversation and raise awareness

the american heart association declared today national wear red today. women are more likely than men to let other things get in the way of their own health. >> women put themselves last. when we look at the statistics that heart disease is the number one killer of all women, women need to put themselves first. >> the american heart association is encouraging women to schedule a doctor's appointment to discuss individual heart disease risks but i think it is so true. women do put themselves last and a lot of times when i go get a mammogram or check up, i do it out of guilt because we talk about it so much but it is easy to put yourself last. >> you get busy with the kids but you have to think of yourself too. >> and eat right. basically that is the most preventive way. exercise and pay attention to
