good thursday morning. welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm gene ramirez. >> and i'm gayle guyardo. in our top stories this morning, the search is on for an art thief. take a good look at this newly released surveillance video. police tell us this is the thief caught on camera carrying a box that contains the stolen chihuly sculpture. the art piece worth $25,000 is now back at the st. pete art gallery and the search is on to catch the person responsible. after a rough time at sea,

land today. jersey port. the ship was on the way to the bahamas via florida when it encountered a winter storm, powerful winds and tall waves tossed the vessel around for hours and sent furnishings flying. and some people onboard were even hurt. >> what a mess. the battle over a piece of property in tampa will be a heated topic at today's tampa city council meeting. city council members are expected to vote today on what to do with a piece of land near st. joseph's hospital. the hospital is proposing a parking lot. neighbors are against it. in a live report, why residentses claim this is a racial issue. all right, the time right now is 43:00 1 . let's turn things over to span -- 4:31. let's turn things over to leigh spann. it's the cold. >> it is. the good news is, it's also not as windy this morning. but for citrus and sumpter, you have a freeze warning until 9 :00. you could continue to drop.

and adrienne, as a mom, this is terrifying. >> reporter: good morning, gayle. it really has to be. and we're going to try to the talk to parents as they pull up here many a few hours. but in the meantime, the student here, 18 years old, i did check, he is accused of having a gun on a bus. well, he's going to go before a judge in a few hours. we talked to one of his neighbors who tells us, it's amazing nothing terrible happened. >> going to do something at school in rob a store or somebody? it's disturbing. >> reporter: disturbing to say the least. deputies tell us another student saw 18-year-old jamarcus sims had a gun on the bus. the student texted a relative who in turn called the sheriff's office. eventually, deputies got everybody off the bus and cuffed the teen. in a separate issue in tampa during a lockdown at plant high school, police found a student sitting in his car with guns

he is now charged with two counts of possession of a firearm on school property. for simms, the student here in brandon, he is set to face a judge at 8:30 or 9:00. we will be on top of the case and let you know what happens onair throughout the day as well as on our app. >> wow, this is incredible. but about the child that texted his family from the school bus, that was quick thinking. all right, thank you so much, adrienne. >> really was. results if an 8 on your side investigation. manatee county shut down a pet sitter after a dog was mauled to death in her car. code enforcement gave pam morgan a cease and desist order. she has until monday to shut down the pet sitting business. a six-pound yorkie right here was dropped off at the pet sitter and ended up being killed by a 90-pound dog. breaking overnight, the oregon stand-off going on for more than a month now could be over in just a few hours.

remain inside the wildlife refuge. >> they insist they'll soon surrender. lindsey mastis is now live from the tampa news center. lindsey, what's happen right now. >> reporter: right the fbi has the refuge surrounded and overnight, police arrested the father of the group's leader. and now according to protester, he just flew into oregon and he planned to head to the refuge overnight. this is still a tense situation. protesters yelled at officers to move their armored vehicles back. at one point, while talking with the negotiator by phone, they insisted the only way they would leave is either dead or without charges and now they admit, they'll surrender. and they claim they'll leave the weapons in the vehicles and then walk one by one to a police check point. they plan to do this while carrying an american flag. the group has been at the refuge since january 2nd, protesting federal land use policies. it's not clear when they'll surrender but it is supposed to

we're continuing to monitor the situation and as soon as they surrender, we're going to let you know on-air and on our wfla news app. >> thank you. we will check back with you. in your vote, the road to the white house leads through south carolina this morning. today democratic candidates senator bernie sanders and hillary rodham clinton will face off for the sixth time. tonight's democratic presidential debate comes just days after senator sanders' victory in the new hampshire primary. tonight's debate takes place at the university of milwaukee at 9:00. in the republican party, the race is over for two candidates. governor chris christie and carly fiorina are now out. after finishing in sixth place in new hampshire, governor christie told the staff that he would end his bid. and former ceo carly fiorina also called it quits through a post on her facebook page. the six remaining candidates are looking forward to south carolina. >> we feel great. we have a great teem there. this is a state that's strong

i have as good a record if not better than anyone else in the race. >> senator marco rubio finished in fifth place in new hampshire. this morning, his campaign manager says that set back could extend the republican nomination fight for at least another three months. the republican presidential primary in south carolina is february 20th. well candidates are also looking ahead to the primary right here in florida. and you will notice that as they visit the bay area for many events in the coming days, donald trump will be in tampa tomorrow for a rally at usf. and tampa bay for sanders will hold a two-day music festival to encourage voter registration this weekend in st. pete. and the senator will be in sarasota on february 27th. and hillary rodham clinton will make a campaign stop. that's happening monday. and now at 4:38, a check of weather and traffic on the 8s. >> as the candidates come in, we will feel nice and warm for them but it feels chilly for us. temperature wise this morn, in the 30s.

so maybe more comfortable as the day progresses. 41 degrees at 8:00 a.m. and notice we warm up quickly. 56 at noon. 64 degrees at 3:00 p.m. that's below average but on the pleasant side compared to the windy 58 we had yesterday. 32 in inverness. we are under a freeze warning. polk county, mid-30s at this point. so not right at freezing but just above it. so pretty cold. and even 39 in sarasota. as the day goes on, it's the coldest morning of this cold snap. sunny, low to mid-60s today. high heads east so we see this warming trend. not quite as cold tomorrow morning. and then we hit 70 tomorrow afternoon. 68 saturday. and valentine's day is 67. leslee, how about traffic on the 8s? we have an accident in pinellas county. it's a hit-and-run. but heads up, clearwater largo road at wyatt street, a collision in the clearwater area. just be aware of that. looks like it might not be taking up lanes so that's good news.

and we have a good drive on highway 60 across the courtney campbell causeway. in fact, from clearwater to tampa, just a seven-minute commute. overall, a good drive. travel times. off the howard franklin bridge into downtown, four minutes. and bearss avenue to i-4, just a 10 minute commute. and let's look at the skyway bridge. thank goodness it's not crazy and windy like the last couple days. only about a 10 minute commute between each of the toll plazas. that's a look at weather and traffic on the 8s. and now back to gene and gayle. >> all right. , leslee, thank you. almost everyone listens to music but did you know the way you listen the to music can tell a lot about your love life. >> yes, this is interesting. up next, the reason listening to music outloud can be good for couples.

southbound on bay shore, we have one lane take anway at hawthorne. it won't slide you down as well. we have a good drive on the selmon expressway and dale mabry. in lakeland, looks great. in fact, if you live in lakeland and work in tampa, smooth sailing on i-4 all the way into the junction.
