good tuesday morning. welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm gene ramirez. >> and i am gayle guyardo. it is march 15th. and today voters in florida have the opportunity to choose their candidate for president. >> and we will have much more on the primary including all you need to know before heading to the polls in a live report in just a few minutes. first, our other top stories. we are finding out much more about how selfless fallen deputy john kotfila really was. the deputy is being hailed a hero for his actions during the wrong-way crash that cost him his life. the woman who called 911 after

heading toward her says deputy kotfila intentionally drove into the vehicle to prevent the wrong-way driver from hitting her. kotfila will be laid to rest friday. gas stations in florida will now be required to upgrade safety measures at gas pumps. the new law is designed to prevent identity theft from skimmers. gas stations that don't complete with the new law could have pumps shut down -- don't comply with the new law could have pumps shut down. the skyway bridge is closed right now because of the heavy fog moving into the area. this is a live look from the traffic camera on the bridge. florida highway patrol tells us visibility is less than 100 feet in some spots there. so hard to see anything really. let's turn things over to leslee lacey to find out more. yeah, it's tough when they close the skyway bridge because there's no easy alternate. it is i-75. is actually condensation on the

and this is at the top of the skyway bridge. no longer seeing vehicles go by. fhp says it ised. the only alternate for you is i- 75. got to go all the way up through ruskin and wind around. i feel sorry if you if you live in sarasota and work in southern st. pete, it will take a while. but keep it in mind. right now, closed due to the very, very thick, thick fog on the roadway, leigh. >> and yeah, and a lot of other places, it's perfectly clear. just this one area from southern pinellas into sarasota. and you can see that when you look at the visibility map. most places you can see 1 0 miles. there's not a speck of fog there. but go to sarasota and you can see only about a quarter mile. so very thick fog. i do expect to see some more widespread fog in the next couple hours. here's a fog forecast for you. polk county county, eastern portions of hillsborough county, you're not going to see as much fog. i think most of this is going

now and about 9:00 a.m. and notice still relatively clear conditions in lakeland at 9:30. after 9:30, all the fog burns off, although lingering sea fog may hang around through the day. otherwise, the afternoon looks great, 81, partly cloudy. in weather and traffic on the 8s, i have an eight-day temperature trend for you, gayle and gene. >> thank you. in your vote today, yep, it's a huge day here, all eyes are on florida today. and you are looking at a live picture here of a polling place in tampa. voters here and in four other states head to the polls today. and now for some candidates, this day is do or die. >> it will be clear to everyone, this is a two-man race. i think after tomorrow, it will officially be a two-man race. >> senator ted cruz is talking about today, of course. here in hillsborough county, election workers have been gearing up for this day for a longtime now. >> and there are nearly 350 polling sites in the county.

is live at one of them on dale mabry highway. ryan, any signs of folks trickling in? >> reporter: gayle, good morning to you once again. not at this point but the doors here at previctim 135 voting site expected to open just before 7:00 this morning. hillsborough county supervisor of elections doesn't think voters will have to wait long at the 348 voting sites in the county. why? well, more than 25% of registered voter, only democrats and republicans in the florida primary, have already voted by mail or gone to an early voting site to cast their ballots. more than 133,000 ballots have been submitted in hillsborough county as of yesterday. and if some people have had a change of heart, well, he says, tough luck per florida law. listen here. >> there is no do-overs. once your ballot is cast, either in my office or an early vote site, that's it.

people are calling deputy john kotfila a true hero. a wrong-way driver killed him over the weekend on the selmon expressway. and each day we are hearing more about what kind of man he really was. he will be remembered on friday at the funeral as a hero. news channel 8's adrienne pedersen is getting all the details of this emotional story. and i understand he saved a stranger's life. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, gayle. it gives us chills to think about how brave he truly was and i will let you know what minute. but first, let's listen to the what happened. >> this man put himself in absolutely. going on. when i take a step back and look at the way everything human shield for us. >> reporter: that's right sarah. she explains the deputy drove

the oncoming wrong-way driver, getting killed so that she could live. and now this is a top clicked story on our website for the fourth day in a row now. and we are sharing his bravery on facebook. and so far, we have more than 2700 reactions plus 1,000 shares as well as almost 200 comments. i do want to share some of those with you. dustin write, such an amazing man to have sacrificed so much just so someone else could live another day. rest in peace. and here joe writing something similar, the word hero is used way too loosely today but this man truly is. god, please watch over the deputy and his family. and let's take a look, lisa writing, what a true hero, risking his own life to save others. god bless you. i found another comment too talk about how we call athletes, pop star, other people heroes all the time but hero. i thought this was interesting.

just go to our facebook page. >> and all day yesterday, we were hearing from people that were say, hey, he would do anything for anybody. and clearly, that is true. i mean, he gave up his own life. thanks, adrienne. coming up on 5:38 on this tuesday morning. leigh, keeping your eye on fog. >> yeah, we are seeing mostly clear conditions throughout polk county and really eastern hillsborough county. and i am more concerned with the coast and obviously the part that i have circled from southern pinellas down over the mouth of the skyway bridge now into manatee and sarasota county. that's where the bridge is shut down due to the very thick fog. and we will see patchy fog through about 9:00 a.m. it clears up quickly. and we see a nice lunchtime. 76 degrees. 80 around 3:00 p.m. and 81 at 4:00 p.m. this is above average and with the higher humidity, having a spring feel. just in time for spring training. orioles and blue jay, 7 7 degrees. braves and tiger, 80 degrees.

and notice we're well above average near 80 through thursday but when the cold front brings us rain on saturday, down to 68 for a high on monday. at 5:38, we will check with leslee lacey because the big update on that sunshine skyway bridge closed. >> yeah, and always terrible when they close the bridge. and i get nervous traveling over it without the fog. i will be honest, it's like a roller coaster to me. but the last thing you want to do is go over when you can't see properly. here's what you need to know. the only alternate is i-75. for those who live in sarasota or bradenton, and you work in south st. pete, you're definitely going to want to leave the house extra early because you got to go all the way around through hillsborough county to get there. so right now, it's closed. i will let you know when it reopens. and let's take a live look, not seeing any vehicles pass here. skyway bridge shut down. keep that in mind, due to fog. that's a look at weather and traffic on the 8s.

alcohol sales in one bay area county are up for discussion. late they are morning, leaders will consider loosening restrictions in polk county to match the laws of lakeland. this is an issue with a lot of residents and businesses fired up. news channel 8's josh thomas is now live from bartow at the county commission building to explain. josh -- >> reporter: good morning, gene. well, since last fall, you can purchase alcohol before noon in lakeland in the city limits but not in the county. but that could change based on what happens here at a workshop this morning. now polk county commissioners will meet later today to decide if there should be changes in the law. right now in lakeland, you can buy beer, wine and liquor before noon on sunday but not in county. some polk county business owners feel that's unfair since customers can easily travel into the city limits to purchase alcohol. so polk county commissioners will hold a workshop today at 9:00 this morning to determine

take a look at this video. that officer is on administrative leave this morning. the woman in the video which has more than 150 shares this morning by the way, that woman is a 23-year-old. now she was trying to get her an argument. she admits she was intoxicated, however she says nothing justifies that officer's force. >> if there's anything that makes me mad about the whole entire video, it's not even being thrown on the ground, it's how he like, oh my god, get over it. >> well the woman showing off her bruises and scratches during the fall. she was arrested for public intoxication. and now she has filed a complaint claiming the use of excessive force. an internal review could take up to 180 days. and the investigation into what caused an amtrak passenger

morning in kansas continues today. this is a joint investigation involving the ntsb, amtrak and bnsf, the company responsible for maintaining the tracks. right now, investigators are focusing on the conditions of the tracks and also looking into whether speed was appropriate at the time. a suspected drug cartel leader linked to a string of deadly weekend gun battles in mexico is behind bars this morning. mexican federal police captured him at a horse racetrack in mexico city. the 31-year-old man was detained with weapon, drugs and false identification. he is believed to be the gulf cartel's number two boss. time now 5:45. our congresswoman kathy castor will join president barack obama and the first lady on their historic trip to cuba this coming sunday. congresswoman castor says the president asked her to join his delegation.

mouth of the tampa bay down through sarasota where we have very thick fog. and as we mentioned, the sunshine skyway bridge remains shut down. watch for the patchy areas of fog. 71 degrees at 8:00 a.m. and it's also really steamy this morning. we're going to warm up to 76 degrees at noon, partly cloudy and end up around 81 at 3:00 p.m. that's above average for sure. and i checked in with my weather watcher big monkey in crystal beach, 70 degrees. foggy conditions topping the headline. and whatever fog does develop burns off after about 9:00 this morning. sea fog along the islands could be socked in throughout the day. the rest of us, mostly sunny and warm. tomorrow morning, fog creeps back in and temperatures stay above average. in fact, feeling like spring for the next several days but friday, saturday and sunday, the rain chances go up. leslee, how about traffic on the 8s? >> it's going to be a tough drive. if you're about to leave the

southern pinellas and work in sarasota or bradenton or vice versa because the skyway bridge is closed. what does that mean for you? especially for those in southern st. pete, north on 275, come all the way around on 75, that is not good. that can put a good hour on the commute there. here's what you need to know, fog going on. street. he is down there and you can see this is the pinellas county south at 275. very thick fog in the area. and again, the skyway bridge is closed due to that thick fog. the vehicles that you see there, they're still in pinellas county. so they'll be routed off before they get to the skyway bridge. i-75 is the alternate. that's a look at weather and traffic on the 8s. >> thank you so much. president barack obama took a break from the oval office monday to rock. >> yeah, look here at his free- style jam session. we will have that for you after a short break. you're watching news channel 8

good morning. thank you for watching news channel 8 today. i'm gayle guyardo. >> and i'm gene ramirez. we begin with breaking news. we're waking up to foggy conditions. it's so foggy in fact that some places that the highway patrol now closed the skyway bridge to drivers. and what you're looking at here is a live picture of the soupy conditions. our photo journal list is about five miles from the bridge. and troopers say in some place, visibility is less than 1 00 feet. you can see some of the detour areas here in the pictures.
