drier air today. that humid air is starting to sneak back, especially into our southern areas but rain chances basically out of forecast for the first half of the day. and even when i add a 20% rain chance this afternoon, it's mostly south of i-4. and boy, that's good news for the river flood warnings. still all of the rivers remain at or above flood stage, little manatee, cyprus creek, peace river. be careful around the communities. again, the rivers still high. at 4:38 in weather and traffic on the , temperature trend for you for the rest of the work week and the weekend. and leslee has the roadways. well, we have a good drive overall. we had a little problem out in ruskin. that has cleared up. we will get to that in a second. lakeland, i-4 , looks great. downtown lakeland is 13 minutes there, up to speed. and in and out of pasco county, 52 to 2675 is roughly an -- to
commute. and state road 72 closed down through the state park area. in fact, the it's it's from the state park road to seidel road. so no easy alternate here. very rural. through the park. take 75 instead. that's a look at weather and traffic. back to gene and gayle. >> leslee, thank you. right now, st. pete police need your help finding the person who beat up a disabled war veteran last friday. this happened in broad daylight in front of a busy store. news channel 8's this morning with disturbing details. jamel-- >> reporter: good morning, gene. you know, definitely sad to hear. and unfortunately, the person who did this police say is still on the loose. it happened in front of this walmart street on 34th street north where the 67-year-old said he was attacked. he says that he was in the parking lot on the way into the store when the suspect stopped him and asked him for the time.
brutally attacked. >> got on top of me and he grabbed me around the neck and just started hitting and hitting and hitting. and finally he gets me to the ground and he takes my walker and starts hitting me with the walker. >> reporter: and the thief got away with hundreds of dollars, his wallet and even his walker. now police say they do have a lead. detectives say they believe the suspect took off in this blue dodge. a witness said the license plate began with gka. now police say this was a random attack. investigators say the robber is a man between the ages of 93 to the 35 years old, 6 feet tall, 200 pounds and was wearing dark clothing. and again, they're asking anybody with any information to give them a call. gene-- >> yeah, let's hope somebody can help out with that information. jamel lanee' reporting live. thank you. two bay area scammers off the streets this morning and
personal information any time soon. one will spend eight years and six months in federal prison. the second will spend four years in prison. the two were found guilty of putting skimmers on several gas stations in hillsborough, pinellas and sarasota counties. two residents in polk county will never own animals again. that's the ruling from a judge after deputies seized more than 170 animals from a rescue. we have to warn you, what you are about to see is extremely ur this is undercover video from peta at darlings darlings animal rescue. the eveners are facing more than 100 animal negligent charges. the animals are being treat bid vets. happening today, this morning we are expected to learn more about an elderly man who may have died due to negligence by a pinellas county nursing home. >> this happened back in may in pinellas park.
newsroom this morning. meredyth, what's the latest in this case? >> reporter: well, we're going hear from the man who was appointed as the health care proxy or guardian for wilbert moten. the 65-year-old man suffered second degree burns and dehydration when he allegedly spent hours in 90-degree heat. he had mobility issues and psychiatric problems. he lived at the facility for years. police say he died from heart failure. his guardian seen here in an earlier interview with news channel 8 wants legislation that prevents such negligence from happening in the future. he has the backing of some state representatives now. he will lay out the proposed legislative changes today. news news news channel 8 will be there and we will have more
>> all right. i know you're saying on top of this. thank you. thousands of itt tech students are trying to figure out their next move after their school shut down unexpectedly. and now one college in hillsborough county is stepping in to help them out. this morning campuses across the country including one here in the bay area are locked up tight. hillsborough community college is helping students transfer into programs at hcc that might lead to credentialing. we spoke with one tampa student who was just finishing her nursing degree. >> whatever reason they had for closing, just let the students that really want their career finish. >> this is your heart and soul. >> it's just that it's so hard. you want to make a better life for yourself and reach that goal. and it's hard when somebody just takes it away from you like that. >> itt tech claims they closed
problems. in just a few months, construction will start on a rope adventure and zip line course in largo. city commissioners approved the deal with the bradenton company to build the new attraction. we flew drone 8 over the highlands recreation complex where the course will be built. this is what the zip line looked like in bradenton. visitors are tethered to a safety harness and riders zip from platform to platform. the owner promises people will lo we're very excited about the project. i understand people's concerns. there's always concern when there's change. but we are a quiet activity. >> the owner of the zip line wants to open soon after the new year starts. walt disney world is cracking down on stole and shared park tickets. here's what you need to know before you take a trip to the happiest place on earth. kids between ages 3 and 9 will be required to scan their
older kids and adults have had their fingers scanned for years now. so we want to know what you think about these changes? share your thoughts with us on our news channel 8 facebook page. log on right now. let's get a check on the weather with leigh. >> good morning. we are in for another pleasant start to the day, especially for early september. we normally expect it to be quite humid. big difference. starting in the mid-70s. 84 at 11:00 a.m. by 1:00, it's 88. i expect 91 to happen around 4:00 p.m. and not much rain. look at the rainfall potential between now and 9:00. most of the rain farther down to the south. that's where a little more moisture continues. our temperatures remain above average for the next few days. 19 today and tomorrow. 92 friday. 91 saturday. and 9 to on sunday and monday.
and keep in mind, this is the peak of hurricane season. we think of the peak as september 10th which is saturday. and thankfully not a lot happening right now. you have to go over to africa before you find a wave that we're watching. a 70% chance of developing. we will check in now with traffic on the 8s as people head out the door early this morning. that's right. it got busy later but more vehicles on the roadway. and now that we're through the holiday weekend, it's a good drive. out the door soon, paul harbor, statad u.s. 19, only a 14 minute commute. and good drive on u.s. 41 between land o'lakes to state road 54, roughly 12 minutes on the drive. sarasota county now. we've got a big road closure due to repair work on the road on state road 72. it's through the state park. and it's from the state park road over to seidel road. it's completely shut down. so no easy alternate there.

a man is trying to use social media to try to find a thief. he was driving on u.s. 19 when he spotted the flag in a fold so he picked it up. he believes it probably belonged to a veteran who served our country. >> for some people spiritual. it's a spiritual relationship, i'm sure and to lose that would be definite the stating. >> he says officials at clearwater police department and macdill air force base are offering to help find the flag's owner. and now to stories making headlines across america this morning. it's an alarming milestone no city wants to reach. chicago had 500 homicides so far this year. new information is out showing august was the city's deadliest month in two decades.

resisting arrest too. we are following a story that will give you the goose bumps this morning. there's been a third clown sighting in north carolina. a man says he spotted a clown in a wooded area behind an apartment complex. he claims the clown was wearing a halloween mask with a yellow polka dot shirt. researchers say more people are cutting gluten out of their diets. about 200 americans have celiac disease but the amount of eaters without that condition tripled. researchers believe americans are going gluten free because of the perceived health

inverness. and where there's more moisture, that's where the rain chances are expected to be. look at the forecast through the next couple hours. this is 1:00 this afternoon. basically dry north of i-4. i have circled the area here. manatee county, sarasota county where you may see a passing shower during the afternoon. because the moisture forecast shows all day the today, south of i-4, more moisture. dry air still in the northern areas. and for most of us today. tomorrow though, we higher and higher up the peninsula of florida which in turn makes it feel more humid. 30% for friday and saturday. and 40% for sunday. well, we're moving along. we have one big issue in sarasota county. that in just a second. great drive on the sun coast parkway. and veterans expressway, up to speed. and looking at eight minutes here through shady hills and odessa, state road 54 over to ehrlich road as well.

time for weather and traffic on the 8s. early on this wednesday, beautiful start to the day. wfla towercamera in downtown tampa shows the city all lit up. it's 76 degrees. dew point is 71. that's what humid it feels. yesterday the dew point was about two to three degrees lower so it may feel more humid but still dry. a high today of 91 degrees. and only a 20% rain chance south of i-4. leslee, how about traffic on the 8s? sarasota county now. a big closure on state road 72 from the state park road over to seidel road. completely blocked. repair that's being done. so you can come up seidel, take
