recruiting fair right here in the bay area. this comes at a time the department is facing a shortage with so many people retiring. they are scrambling to find new recruits. mary mcguire joins us now in braiding to live where the fair is going to take face tonight. mary, his fhp facing any challenges hiring people? >> they are facing several big challenges especially at a time when law enforcement is battling a bad reputation across the country this contrast of the impact public safety. many people don't realize state troopers do a lot more than drive around on the interstates. they handle homicide cases, find drove track curse -- traffickers in there also some that handles civil unrest, mob in prison riots. this could mean longer response times which could put lives at risk. >> we have a lot of people getting ready to retire. we

it happened in the harbor crest neighborhood. we are told the fire caused serious damage to the home's living room and kitchen. the woman who lived in the home had to be taken to the hospital, again, because of smoke inhalation, and now investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. investigators are trying to figure out how a father who vanished white jet skiing with his 3-year-old son died. crews found the body of 38-year- old bill morris along the banks of the river. he had the little boy was found all alone on a small island unharmed. the time right now is 6:38 on this wednesday morning. boy we are on a roll. >> it has been such nice weather, although keep in mind that we are not going to see the sunrise today for another hour. this is how it looks out of our new port richey camera. clear skies 66 degrees. temperatures climb, 71 degrees

the state of florida is facing a shortage with so many troopers retiring. they are scrambling to find new recruits. mary, what does a shortage in troopers mean for the general public? >> reporter: well less troopers out on the road means longer response times and also a

risk. over the next few years the florida highway patrol will desperately need to fill vacancies. recruiters have their work cut out for them. law enforcement is battling a bad reputation. it has become more challenging simply because of all the events that have taken place over the last couple of years. >> reporter: starting sally in iowa pays $49,000 and florida is the lowest starting salary in the nation at just under $34,000. the florida highway patrol will be holding an open house recruiting fair in bradenton tonight that runs from 4:00 until 7:00. hopefully these will get the word out the florida highway patrol is hiring. we know what an important job these troopers play in keeping
