and why governor branstad wants to stop accepting syrian refugees for now. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm sonya heitshusen and i'm dan winters. two men died when police say another driver plowed into their car sunday evening. it happened at the intersection of hubbell and east 37th. jannay towne joins us first with two possible factors in this deadly crash. the investigation is underway to determine whether speed and the combination of drugs or alcohol contributed to what happened. witnesses told police that 53 year old deanna gliem was driving well over the posted speed limit of 40 miles per hour... when she slammed into another car on hubbell. 22:50:49 it just happened. there was no screeching brakes- it just sounded like a loud explosion 52 the collision happened in front of her apartment just after six last night. her granddaughter ran to
help while others called 9-1-1. but there was nothing anyone could do. police say 60 year-old richard hummel and 59-year-old randall sonnenburg died in the crash. family says the two grew up together and became brothers after hummel's parents took in sonnenburg after his mom and dad died. at this point, investigators say it looks like the pair did nothing wrong... as they merged onto hubbell and according to witnesses, were hit by a speeding car. 22:58:35 there are circumstances on the surface that it would appear that they have to yield the right of way on the roadway, again, the witness statements indicate that they may not have had the opportunity to see this car if it was traveling as fast as it was described 48 no charged have been filed in the case. police say gliem went to the hospital... where she was able to speak with investigators. her condition or the extent of her injuries are not known at this time. crews dredging a des moines lake found a stolen car underwater. police say the car could have been sitting in easter lake for
some time. the suzuki swift was reported stolen out of des moines back in 19-94. the town of dayton says it won't let vandals ruin the holidays. hopefully we can turn this tragedy into a triumph, and get it lit up by thanksgiving vandals damaged dozens of christmas decorations in the dayton city park early sunday morning. wooden figures were knocked over, candy canes littered the ground, and lights were brought down. tonight the community will come up with a plan to get the christmas displays back up... saturday will be a work day.. crews were inspecting a statue on the iowa state university campus today. the george washington carver statue was covered in shaving cream friday afternoon. it was cleaned immediately but museum officials are looking for permanent damage. president steven leath says the school will be conducting an investigation to see if the vandalism was racially motivated. carver was the university's first african american student. the iowa department of heal is urging iowans to get their flu shots... after two flu-related deaths in our state
the department isn't releasing a lot of information about the deaths... but we do know they were both men from central iowa... between the ages of 41 and 60. officials say iowa is one of three states with the highest flu activity. the flu usually peaks in february.... and can stick around through may. parents of babies born early are being encouraged to share their stories in honor of world prematurity day, tomorrow nixon howard wasn't due to be born until december 2nd. but, his mom gave birth to him when she was 28 weeks along because of a condition called hydrops, which is severe swelling in babies. nixon had to overcome several other complications. his parents have to juggle their time at the n-i-c-u, at work, and taking care of their two older kids. "i had no idea how much of a struggle this, the nicu life, really can be, and prematurity is hard enough and lots of babies are born with complications on top of prematurity." they would love to have nixon home in time for the holidays. world prematurity day is

the view of my closest military and civilian advisers that that would be a mistake." president obama also said the u-s will do more to help france deal with terror threats. governor branstad joining other states by stopping all work on accepting syrian refugees... investigators say one of the suspects came in with a wave of syrian refugees into europe. 23-states are refusing to accept refugees... governor branstad said earlier today that states don't have that right to not accept them. but this evening, he ordered all state agencies to halt any work on syrian refugee resettlements. branstad wants the federal government to make sure refugees have been properly screened and security protocols are in place. 55:49 i don't want to be naive about the danger that we are facing 55:56 we saw a russian airliner blown-up, we've seen the coordinated attacks in paris, we has some americans that thwarted an attack on a train not so long
