studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everybody. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm savannah guthrie and got willie here for matt this morning. >> good to see you. the video out of cleveland, lebron james, all 6'8", 250 of him diving into the front row and falling into ellie day, the wife of professional golfer jason day. she was taken to the hospital on a stretcher. we're told she's okay but scary moments. carson will have the full story. >> by the way, didn't she just give birth a month ago. >> a month ago had a baby. >> check in on that story and right to our top story this morning. the first arrest in the san bernardino terror attack. enrique marquez, the longtime neighbor and friend of one of the shooters appeared in federal court late thursday and is now facing a list of serious charges, and we're learning more this morning about what police say was a dark history with syed farook. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is following the story. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. if convicted enrique marquez faces up to 35 years in prison.
7:02 am
according to court documents he met syed farook, the gunman, back in 2004, converted to islam and a short time later was radicalized, well before the deadly attack. enrique marquez faced a federal judge, charged with three criminal counts. while prosecutors say there's no evidence he participated in the attack that left 14 dead this month, they say marquez conspired to plan two other terror plots with gunman syed farook, his longtime friend. in late 2011 the affidavit says marquez and farook wanted to attack the riverside community college library where they attended school. duo also discussed throwing pipe bombs from a second floor area above a cafeteria and then shooting people as they fled. the pair also discussed a plot to terrorize a southern california freeway. marquez told investigators they chose the spot with no exits, the plan for farook to throw

7:05 am
san bernardino. as you look back on this case are there points along the way where law enforcement might have stepped in and intercepted these guys? >> i don't know that we see any red flags to shine a spot light on say, we should have looked here and it kind of shows the progression he was originally introduced to islam back in 2005 when he was 14 years old and then the radicalization, how he was provided with the jihadist rhetorich and this is really indicative of the challenges of identifying people who are becoming radicalized. >> according to investigators, he is talking, talking to them for 11 days. is that going to help his case? ultimately will that save him from jail time but maybe a lesser sentence? >> don't know about saving him from jail time. 14 dead americans, a long ranging plot. he's likely going to jail.
7:06 am
it will excuse him from face the facts here. >> thank you very much. breaking news overnight in the presidential race. bernie sanders' campaign is in trouble for accessing hillary clinton's private campaign data. nbc's kristen welker is in kristen, what more can you tell us? >> reporter: willie, good morning. according to the democratic national convention, this breach happened on wednesday when a computer glitch allowed people in jose luis dos santos' campaign to access a democratic donors' database for a brief period. still, the allegations are serious and could hurt sanders who is already struggling to catch up with hillary clinton. >> the blow to bernie sanders' presidential campaign comes on the eve of the next democratic debate and just a few weeks before the iowa caucuses, the democratic national committee immediately suspending access after accusing it of improperly accessing confidential data from hillary clinton's campaign on
7:07 am
the sanders campaign acknowledged the security breach to nbc news and the dnc official said it lasted for about half a hour on wednesday and believes at this point four people accessed the information. the sanders campaign blaming the software vendor for a glitch that temporarily allowed access to the information, telling news the dnc is relying on an incompetent vendor who on more than one occasion has dropped the firewall between the various democratic candidates' data. according to "washington post" the vendor called the episode an isolated incident adding by lunchtime it was resolved and the staffer involved has been fired. the campaign maintains none of the information was downloaded or printed. now i want to underscore this one point. while the dnc says four people may have accessed the data, at this point the sanders campaign is holding one person responsible telling me that the behavior is, quote, unacceptable, and that staffer was immediately fired. it's unlikely there will be any criminal investigation. we reached out to the clinton

campaign who told me just moments ago no comment. willie. >> kristen, later today the president conducts his end of the year press conference before going to san bernardino and then off to vacation in hawaii. what do we expect to hear in that presser? >> reporter: willie, look. there's no larger issue for this president than the threat of terrorism and isis and expect that to take center stage during today's press conference where the president will again try to reassure americans that they are safe heading into the christmas holiday, but with criticism mounting that he hasn't been tough enough, the president will likely face pressing questions about whether he needs to change his isis strategy with his approval rating at its lowest level since the 2014 mid-term elections. mr. obama will likely get asked about those revelations that his defense secretary ash carter used personal e-mail for official business. of course, that's an issue that has ensnared democratic front-runner hillary clinton, and he'll be asked about the broader 2016 race. finally, willie, you can expect reporters to ask the president what he wants to accomplish during his final year in office.
7:09 am
officials here say his biggest regret is he hasn't been able to get gun control passed and he's been signaling he wants to go to cuba now that relations are normalized. will he make the trip? all that and more will be at the fore before he leaves for his annual christmas vacation for hawaii. >> kristen, thanks. nbc news will have live coverage of president obama's news conference when it begins on most of these stations. big news out of vatican this morning. pope francis has just given his approval to the miracle that would make mother teresa a saint. nbc global correspondent bill neely has more on that. bill, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. in life she received the highest honors like the nobel peace prize and 18 years after her death mother teresa has been recognized as a repeated miracle worker and next year she will become a saint. she was, of course, known as the saint of the gutters for her work with the poor in the indian slums of calcutta, work that won

>> taunting hip-hop fans around the country when he said he wouldn't even listen to it. >> the ways he's flaunted his wealth did not engender a lot of love for martin shkreli in any community, let alone the hip-hop community. >> reporter: fbi on thursday said they hadn't sized anything from his home triggering tweets like this, can you listen, at least. can you go back and get it? overnight shkreli sent out a single tweet saying he was glad to be back home and he thanked people for their support. he's expected back in court in january. >> strange case when you have clan, right? >> got to be a first. now to major security changes to disneyworld and other theme parks across the country how will it all impact your next family trip? nbc's kerry sanders is on that story in orlando. kerry, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. this is now a thing of the past.

7:15 am
until now low security. in the wake of san bernardino at california theme parks heightened awareness. there's so many off-balanced people ideas that we've got to protect ourselves. >> reporter: at universal, they have used metal detectors before, during halloween. this is the best security practices. >> i agree it's a sign of the times. things have changed and we need more security now like this? >> yes, i do. >> reporter: so with the new security you may have to wait in line at the entrance just to then go inside and wait in line to take a ride. savannah, willie. >> all right. sign of the times, kerry sanders, thank you. now to that frightening scene we showed you earlier. nba game last night.
