shoppers on this christmas eve. good evening. i'm lynn melling in for dan and sonya. thank you for joining us tonight. charlotte police say the deadly shooting inside a mall on christmas eve was "not a random act of violence." i want to tell the public emphatically this is not a random act of violence. this is something that happened between two parties were beefing back and forth and it happened to happen at northlake mall. this was absolutely not an active shooter situation. police say two groups of people were fighting inside northlake mall when one of them opened fire. they say a gunman was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer who was working at the mall. so far, no other injuries related to the shooting have been reported. the mall was evacuated and placed on lock down. des moines police are looking further into why one of their own officers shot his gun at the des moines airport . it happened inside an office
police say 23 year old brady pratt drew his gun from his holster to practice his "quick draw skills." they say he unknowingly had his finger on the trigger and fired a round... hitting the ceiling. pratt reported the incident to his supervisor... who then notified a lieutenant. disciplinary actions may follow after the investigation. turning to weather... it's beginning to feel more like christmas with the snow on the ground. meteorologist brett mcintyre joins us now with a first look at the forecast. 15 to 20 cars were piled up on

"metro waste authority's" winter tree collection runs from december 28th through january 8th. one green "compost it!" sticker must be attached to each. stickers are a dollar 25 and are sold at grocery, hardware, and convenience stores. trees must be free of accepted. one school in washington is
washington high school students that take part in the gourmet cooking class made everything from an auto body stop ---to the prison from the t-v show "the walking dead" the only rule ----all of their building materials had to be edible.. some made trees out of ice cream cones --and others used oreo cookies to make tables teachers say the kids enjoyed creating their houses "it's a fun project they get to be creative they get to pick their groups, so it's a project they can really take control of, be creative but still have to read a recipe to bake something. so the kids enjoy it." " and tonight, some third graders are giving back to those in need for christmas. coming up... how these kids are making this holiday a little brighter out of the goodness of their own hearts... welcome back... while many of us

"i just want to give them as can, so they can just be happy" its the last day before christmas for these third graders... who have chosen to skip their holiday party and make the holidays a little brighter for those in need. here don't have home. so we tried to help them out, get them some stuff... especially toilet paper" over the past few weeks they have been collecting items to
baskets, which were dropped off at homeward bound. teacher, bretta haberman, says giving back to the community helps them understand they can make a difference in someone's life "this helps them see really how they can make a change in the grand valley or really help people who are less fortunate." the decision to make the donations was left entirely up to the class... out of the goodness of their own hearts. "we really want more people the in community to be more safe and comfortable" "thinking about all those people that don't have anything it kind of makes me feel sad, so i just like to give back" and in giving back, they're realizing its better to give, than to receive. the donation. in addition to the baskets each student wrote a family a card for christmas. before santa clause left tonight to deliver toys around the world... he made a special visit in the quad cities today... he stopped into the genesis pediatric unit this morning to deliver presents to kids that can't be at home on christmas. misses claus and some local firefighters also helped hand out toys. so often the fire department see these families at their worst. and it's just good time to give back to the community to show them we're here to help them year round. after the genesis visit... santa, misses claus and the firefighters also made deliveries to the kahl home in davenport. and many of you may be wondering when santa will arrive to the metro..
