here in des moines. his campaign manager later confirmed the decision to the washington post. trump says it's because he doesn't respect fox news anchor megyn kelly.... after she questioned him about controversial comments he'd made against women. now trump says he'll host a separate event in iowa as the debates go on without him. it would be a fundraiser event for wounded warrior, but no other details have been announced. already that decision is drawing punches from trump's top rivals... "i want you to think how you would react if you were interviewing someone for a job and they said 'you know what? i'm not willing to show up for the interview. if someone did that...didn't show up at the interview...you know what you'd say? earlier this week, ted cruz got an endorsement from former rival, rick perry... yesterday, the two appeared together in osceola. cnn reported that while perry had never been a fan of cruz's in the past, cruz had been calling him for weeks to ask for his endorsement and perry finally relented. perry calls cruz "an outstanding listener." meanwhile, another former presedential candidate has endorsed marco rubio. the nod comes from former new york mayor george pataki. but a quinnipiac poll released just yesterday shows rubio lagging behind in iowa... it has donald trump and ted cruz neck and neck at the top... then rubio comes in third, with 13 percent. no other candidate received double digit support. a new quinnipiac democratic poll of iowans is set to be released later this morning. here's what it showed just two weeks ago... senator bernie sanders was pulling 49 percent over hillary clinton's 44 percent. we'll bring you the

as they come in. both sides are hoping for a good caucus turnout... but so are local businesses. channel 13's josh nguyen is live in capitol square this morning to tell us what the rush of reporters and campaign parties means for des moines. good morning josh. caucus economic impact: the caucus increases restaurant traffic before and after the caucus. national outlets will run stories about restaurants and tourists seek out these restaurants when they travel into town. it's helping put dsm on the map. smaller restaurants especially will see a big increase. things have changed drastically over 30 years. restaurants used to be nervous about accommodating caucus crowds but now business is up enough throughout the year, that they don't do much to change. hotel occupancy rate: usually hotels are filled to about 60 percent, during caucuses it's up to 88 or 90 percent occupancy. 1,600 credentialed media for the media filing center.

pushes on this morning... today state senators will vote on a controversial bill to increase funding for k-12 education... it would increase the state's contribution by 2 percent in 2017. monday the republican-led house passed it... but it likely won't pass in the democratic-led senate... that's because democrats are hoping for a four percent increase. and a poll of educators shows 88 percent of them are as well...

the iowa department of agriculture and land stewardship announced today that it's the first in the nation to track how much food iowa school services buy from local farms.the most recent data shows by november 2015, schools had purchased about $35,000 worth of local food, the most from frozen dairy products at about two thousand pounds worth around $5,500. the least was broccoli at four pounds for about three bucks. idals partnered with the usda's agricultural marketing service on these reports, which are set to be released at the end of every month for the school year. the numbers are submitted voluntarily and the department of agriculture looks to add more names to the reporting list. you can find the full report
