some light snow is falling along the western border of the state this morning. the winds will remain out of the northwest between 15 and 25 mph today, this will help keep temperatures on the cool side, making it the coolest day of the week. if you have been longing for the warmth to return, you'll just have to wait until friday. this will be the start of a major warm up over the few following days. friday's high should be above average, but saturday afternoon looks to be the warmest day over the next week with highs reaching the upper 50s and lower 60s. first on 13... a des moines

continues this morning... an arrest coming over three months after it all unfolded. officers were called to the 42- back in november. that's where we find channel 13's josh nguyen this morning. it's been a while since this case was in the headlines...refresh our memories on the details? this was three months ago...the week of thanksgiving...this was a messy crime scene. officers were called to this duplex in the 42-hundred block of hull avenue shortly after seven p-m. police say 47 year old barney fraaken shot his wife, amy, and their 16-year- old daughter, amber.... before turning the gun on himself. his attempt to commit suicide failed. they believe the double murder was part of some sort of domestic dispute. fraaken has been in the hospital recovering ever since then, but

we are finding out more this morning about a shooting in a des moines elementary school parking lot. it happened tuesday night near park avenue elementary on the city's south side. the des moines register is now reporting the shooting was the result of a drug deal gone bad. police say someone was trying to buy marijuana, when shots rang out from a passing car. darrius colter was hit in the upper leg - he is expected to be okay. police did find a gun and bullet casings near the school, but there's

a des moines police officer is costing the city half-a-million dollars this morning... this is what kaileigh joiner's car looked like after she was t-boned by a police officer. the officer ran a red light.. and he didn't have his emergency lights and siren on. that was back in april of 20-13. now the des moines register reports a polk county jury awarded joiner and two other people in the car 422- thousand dollars for their injuries. metro drivers will want to watch out for officers especially today. they'll be watching interstate 2-35 extra close for speeding. the effort brings together officers from several agencies. officials say it's meant to save lives by raising awareness of safe

a chant from the student section at a high school basketball game continues to stir controversy... monday during the playoff game between dallas center-grimes and perry, some students on the dallas center- grimes side began chanting

perry's largely hispanic roster. administrator's from dallas center-grimes immediately put a stop to it, but it was too late to keep the story from going viral. the iowa high school athletic association has now weighed in, saying it's up to administrators from both sides to take action and keep this kind of poor sportsmanship under wraps. dallas center grimes' athletic director says he did hear the chant, but didn't have to say anything to students... 04:40 'im not even sure i had to say anything. i think it was just my presence, that they knew i was there. we also had two other administrators there too.' watson says it was just a small group of students chanting... and they shouldn't reflect on the school as a whole dmacc students are getting a special lesson in valuing diversity today... get.'' as part of the school's black history month celebration, students will visit the jordan house today. the historic west des moines home was an important stop along the underground railroad. officials say it's an opportunity to show students des moines' diverse community. the tour begins at 10 this morning. des moines water works customers can expect an up-tick in water rates... yesterday the water works board approved a 5-year, 241-million dollar improvement plan. the bulk of that will go toward infrastructure projects to meet increased demand. a large portion will also be used to remove nitrates and contaminates during the water treatment process. the change will cause rates to jump 10-percent in april... and that could be just the start... of the total costs...184-million will come from customers in the

we've all heard our fair share of airplane horror stories.... but a des moines man says even years of business travel couldn't have prepped him for what he experienced on an american airlines flight last month. channel 13s sonya heitshusen has the story. mike feinbergs flight to st. louis on january 12th started out like any

it wasnt until his return trip to des moines... via chicago... that things went bad - really bad. by this time, mike estimatest hed been sitting in his first class seat - a seat hed been upgraded to - for about an hour. it didnt take mike long to realize what he was sitting in. mike quickly contacted the flight attendant.

the flight attendant gave him blankets and a trash bag to sit on... his experience with american airlines didnt get any better. when he finally reached the gate... about three hours later. the response from the gate attendant - american did eventually provide a shower and a change of clothes. they also offered a 200-dollar voucher... for another flight on american airlines. by protocols... mike means protocols for cleaning planes and dealing with bio-hazardous waste. remember, hes a medical rep... who deals with bio- hazards... like urine... blood and other bodily fluids... on a

american airlines refused to give mike its protocols for dealing with bio- hazardous waste... saying its a privacy issue. when we contacted the airline... a spokesperson told us: 'our aircraft cleaners are trained to look for visible items like trash left on the seats, floor and seatback pockets. we regret that the cleaners did not detect that this particular seat was wet. if our customer service agents or flight crew had been notified before the flight, we would have removed the affected seat cushion and replaced it with a new, clean one.' mike knows what hell do in the future... sh channel 13 news. american airlines says its policy for handling
