3 happening today... local law enforcement agencies will band together to hold a public meeting on how they use body cameras. news 13's lauren brigman is live from downtown asheville. lauren,here is this meeting being held? in the highsmith auditorium at 6 p-m, on the campus of u-n-c asheville. it is free and open to the public. 3 the buncombe county sheriff's office implemented body cams last year and currently, 70 sheriff's deputies are outfitted with them. they are also now consididing
officers with body cams. though a policy has been in place since the agency began using them, tonight's forum is a chance to answer questions from the public. buncombe county sheriff van duncan, asheville police chief tammy hooper and a local civil rights attorney are among those who will be in attendance. the asheville police department plans to implement body cameras for 60 officers as early as this summer. officials with the sheriff's office say that is one of the many reasons they chose to organize this event, now. 3 00:21;54-00:22;06"the police department has decided on implementing the body cams. we've had people who have had questions, we've had the recent terminations, and it just felt like a good time to have this type of event." you may recall that two sheriff's deputies were recently terminated following a use of force complaint. in this case, authorities say the review of body camera footage was critical in making that decision. 3 coming up at 5:30, authorities explain why body cam footage can be a critical
accountability. live in downtown asheville, lauren 3 3 a 14-year-old from macon county remains on life support this morning after he accidentally shot himself in the head. it happened saturday afternoon in franklin. deputies believe christopher cowart thought the handgun was not loaded when it went off. investigators say there were other children at the cowart home at the time, but no adults were present. we spoke with christopher's dad by phone. 3 it's definitely a tragedy and an accident that could possibly happen to anyone. christoper's dad says he is a great kid, an honor roll student, who is very caring and rambunctious. a family friend created a go-fund me page to help the family. you can find the link at w-l-o-s dot com. 3 3 3 3 happening today... the haywood county school board is set to vote on whether to close central elementary. as we have reported, the school has seen falling enrollment and a budget shortfall, but many parents have argued that
central closes, most kids would go to either hazelwood or junaluska elementary. the board meeting begins tonight at seven. 3 3 3 news 13 investigates a trend in the service dog industry. more people are now turning their family pets into emotional support service dogs. with proper training, emotional support dogs provide a great service.. especially for veterans and senior citizens. but one industry expert believes some people are abusing the system... by certifying their pets as service animals just to take them anywhere. 3 sot hal herzog, western carolina university, interview shot 10:39:43 "the problem of course is there are some legitimate uses of these animals and they can perform a really important service so what this does is it cheapens the whole enterprise and it makes it really difficult for people who have legitimate needs for service animals and emotional support animals." 10:40:01 tonight at 11.. news 13's jon ostendorff investigates how easy it is to certify your family pet as an emotional support service dog. and if that official looking vest and certificate can
