evacuated due to a fire. "today in new york's" tracie strahan just arrived. what's happening? >> i can tell you a port authority spokesperson tells me they are literally waiting for the smoke to clear at terminal b. that fire is under control. want to show you the emergency vehicles remain up top. a couple of squad cars because of a fire under a -- looking at a photo that shows the heavy smoke condition that can be seen r miles around newark liberty aiiorport when this broke out early this morning. want to show you the response to this. right now, they think it was electrical. it rekindled after that -- in wside of the ceiling. the second flare-up forced about 200 people to be evacuated from terminal b. they remain out right now. but things should be back to normal for the morning rush.
a result of this. a flight that was scheduled to depart at 1:00 in the morning. that flight is still wfoaiting to depart. we can tell you, no injuries were reported as a result of this. back to you. >> tracie strahan at newark. thank you. also breaking news in brooklyn. smoke spreading throughout a neighborhood. a large fire thate tarted early this morning. the fire burning for hours in prospect lefferts gardens. katherine creag is there with the latest. >> reporter: we're getting a little relief. there's not as much smoke as before. as you take a look down there, all of the firefighters are still on the scene trying to get full control of the fire. you see even more firefighters walking there, bringing supplies to that commercial building that was on fire shortly before 11:00 this evening. fire broke out at a business on parkside avenue near rogers avenue. we want to show you this video. a fire dheef
restaurant supply store. hundreds are fighting the blaze. th at building when the fire broke out. a fire chief speculating that perhaps there are containers, big containers of cooking oils inside that restaurant. that fueled the flames. despite, how huge the fire was, they kept flames from spreading and saved a church next door. >> it was good aggressive firefighting. pe dople knowing what to do. we saved the church and the 'tother part of the building also. >> reporter: there are numerous streets closed off around parkside avenue and rogers avenue. it will be like this for several more hours, michael. we also r ceived an alert from the fdny that pretty much this fire is under control. just about 100% under control. you see firefighters not going anywhere because they're still putting out hotspots just making sure they spray the building so nothing reignites.

into a backhoe on sunday morning. delaware county's edic. examiner plans to release the identities of the workers after the autopsies today. but the national transportation safety board official has confirmed, one of the deceased was the operator of the equipment. the u.s. senator chuck schumer from new york says the other person killed was a supervisor. we're also learning they were both amtrak veterans. a couple of questions come to mind. what happened and what caused the train carrying 348 crew members and passengers to collide with the backhoe? we pose those questions to the national transportation safety board investigator and he says they're looking at the structure ofto the track. they're also looking at the eva ent data recorder and videotape from the locomotive. all have been recovered. now, the event data recorder has been sent to the safetysboard's laboratory in washington. they hope to answer questions on how fast the train was going at

breaking news this morning. an update on the situation at newark airport where a fire forced a terminal to be evacuated twice overnight. also breaking overnight, flames through a building in brooklyn. firefighters spent hours getting it under control. we'll have a live report. dangerous winds topple trees and power lines knocking out power to thousands. chris has the morning often. the storm team 4 raphael miranda is here with the forecast. raphi, i was traveling through connecticut also and saw snow. >> we have another round of rain and snow. it's been storm after storm and we're dealing with another one on this monday morning. thankfully, it's a weak storm. but bring snow nonetheless. on the radar and satellite picture, northern westchester, not much going on in and around the city right now. we could have slick spots north and west. these are advisories in effect in sullivan, ulster and dutchess county. that's where the worst travel is. coated 1 to 3 inches of wet snow. here in the city, mostly rain moving in over the next couple of hours. >> showers linger throughout the day. >> pesky rain and temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. look at how the snow is impacting.
>> starting in new jersey. 37 northbound, closing the ride to exit 22. that's route 202, 206. also in elizabeth on route 1 and 9. southbound is closed by elizabeth avenue, the left lane blocked. the van wyck, delays at hillside avenue with a crash that is now in the right lane. more weather and traffic on the 4s. 'em lirks thank you so much. breaking news at newark liberty newark. we've gotten an update on the terminal evacuated not once but twice overnight due to smoke. tracie strahan is live at the airport. where do we stand now, tracie? >> reporter: things back to normal in terminal b. we were there when the fire trucks were there and blocking access for passengers. it appears that everything is back to normal and they're being allowed back inside. want to show you video of when we were in the lobby. we were looking at all of those passengers waiting for red eye flights trying to get back inside of terminal b.
fire in the ceiling of a boiler room here, they evacuated nearly 200 passengers. a lot of them waiting for the early morning flights. want to show you a photo that came into social media of the heavy smoke condition of that fire that broke out just after 1:00 this morning. it could be seen for miles around. it forced this airport to be ventilated for a couple of hours. they had to do that in order to allow people back inside. there was a large response from fire crews and port authority police before they were able to do that. police were blocking access to this building. before people were allowed back inside. again, that fire is under control and after being evacuated terminal b at newark liberty airport has been reopened, michael. not much comfort to a lot of these passengers who we spoke with. again, they're trying to make flights. a lot of them leaving within the hour. there's concern whether or not they will make it. one flight was impacted so far.
that was a specific flight scheduled to leave at 1:00 in the morning. it's still standing by. >> it's early to be out on the tarmac. breaking news in brooklyn. a couple of firefighters are working hard to control a massive fire. erupted this morning on parkside avenue in prospect, lefferts gardens. "today in new york's" katherine creag is there. she just spoke with the fire chief. kat, good morning. >> darlene, good morning to you. a couple of the fire trucks -- you can zoom in to this warehouse. a massive warehouse. as you said, a massive fire. firefighters were battling. this was a little bit before 11:00 p.m. fire broke out at the business on parkside avenue near rogers avenue. that fire chief tells us it's a restaurant supply store likely with large containers of cooking oil inside. those fueled the fire despite how huge this blaze was.
spread and they saved a dhur next door. the fire chief said how difficult the fire was to fight. >> can't get in the building. the heavy, hetch i fire, avy fire, we're afraid of collapse. everything is burning below the roof. we have to hit it from the outside. >> reporter: one firefighter had a minor injuries. around us, numerous streets are closed off. you said parkside avenue is going to be close to rogers avenue and the sfier chief tells us. thank you. 5:35 happening now. concerns about possible damage to a church in elizabeth, new jersey. we're told the top of the ukrainian catholic church was damaged. they fear the steeple may be in danger toppling. structural engineers are

"today in new york's" tracie strahan is there now. tracie, what is the situation now at this hour? >> reporter: we can tell you, darlene, that fire has been placed under control. passengers have been allowed back inside. but we are hearing the residual delays, specifically on delta airlines for flights that were supposed to be departing about now. i want to show you video that we took about 30 minutes ago. before 200 passengers were evacuated from termieenal b were oallowed back inside. they were trying to let the terminal ventilate from the early morning fire that broke

"today in new york's" tracie strahan is there right now. tracie, have things returned to normal or still sort of up in the air? >> they're redefining norm at at this point, darlene. we can tell you the flames have been put out from the early morning electrical fire. but passengers now coming face to face with flight delays. want to show you video that we just ral out with.
the delta terminal and all of e boards are telling people that their flights have been delayed for about an hour. this is all because that electrical fire that broke out in the ceiling of a boiler room is right near that terminal. so now they're trying to figure out how to get things back up d iunning. i want to show you now the cause of all of this. a photo sent in by a viewer that shows that early morning fire that broke out just after 1:00 in the morning. again, it was in the ceiling of the boiler room. it caused a really heavy smoke condition that led for the entire terminal to be evacuated not once, but twice because the flames reignited at one point. it was heavy emergency response as a result of this. roughly 200 passengers had to be evacuated but now we spoke with a passenger who is trying to get to his destination. but that's not happening as a result of this fire. take a listen. >> i got a text this morning, my flight was supposed to leave at 6:00. it said push back to 7:30.
