"action news" at 12:30 continues with rick williams sara bloomquist and meteorologist, david murphy. hello again sara is off and here are the stories we are following for you now on "action news" at 12:30. a mother in philadelphia is facing charges after her 12-year-old son was killed. we have the latest on that. and the former new york jets running back was killed during an apparent road rage incident and a witness describes the moments before the shooting and surveillance cameras capture the moment before a school bus crashes into a house in florida. now the details, a wilmington firefighter is being remembered for her bravery. hope died last night months after the arson left her severely burned. vernon odom talked to the fire chief in wilmington and he is there now with more on the sad story. >> reporter: good afternoon. it's a sad day here in the city

of wilmington and the surrounding area. the city was praying for hope that some how she would pull through but new the odds were long. the wilmington fire chief was emotional during his media briefing this morning. fire chief anthony good speaks this morning. the third firefighter, hope died vault of a late support arson. 68 days ago that fire left burns over 70% of her body. >> weeks ago on a thursday we were called to the hospital and we worked diligently to get the family members to the hospital for what we thought would be arty hope's last night and she lasted two more weeks. hope was a 23 year veteran of the department and two other veterans perished in the inferno. they were killed september 24th when the first floor of the

house collapsed and a fellow firefighter brad speakman was also injured during the disaster and was released after six weeks in the hospital. his road to recovery is a long one, he and hope became trapped as they tried to rescue captain leach. and hope was due to retire and take up nursing a mother of three. >> i was with the family last night in the hospital during arty's final moments. i love that family. and i appreciate and respect the ability to be there. >> as for the suspect in the arson back in september beatrix ruiz will fate a murder charge in the wake of hope's death. founran plans are not yet finalized. the chief says it will be a full

line of duty service and ceremony in her honor. live in wilmington delaware, i'm vernon odom, channel 6 "action news." >> all right vernon thank you. on the weather front the cold and chilly temperatures have returned but at least the sun is shining as we look live from the temple university cam sky 6 hd showing you center city. lets look at the commodore barry bridge instead. blue skies out and it's a nice way to start the weekend first weekend of the december that is. meteorologist, melissa magee, live at the big board with the latest on the temperatures. >> reporter: hey rick. happy friday to you. it looks like temperatures are seasonable on this friday but we were off to a chilly start this morning. numbers are recovering because of the sun overhead. 48 in lancaster and the poconos just 39 degrees and 50 in philadelphia and holding at 50 in cape may up to beach haven at this hour and 51 in wilmington. the winds are blustery out of

the west northwest. sustained wind speeds 10 to 20 miles per hour with higher gusts to the west and 31 miles per hour gusts in reading and clocking in at 25 miles per hour here in philadelphia and 24 at the coast in cape may. it's quiet right now, you notice the clouds are starting to increase because of a weak frontal boundary off to the north and west and this moves to the south and east and little fanfare associated with it, but this will help to bring colder air in just in time for the start of our weekend. we'll take it into the day the afternoon and evening forecast. 2:00 today 51 degrees. 4:00 p.m. sun and number of 49. upper 40s at 6:00 p.m. underneath a mostly clear sky and the winds start to slowly diminish into the rest of tonight with numbers falling down into the lower 40s. here is the weekend call from accuweather. plenty of sunshine both days and saturday breezy and clouds and sunshine and a high temperature

coming in at 49 and on sunday, nice mixture of sunshine and clouds and sharing the sky at 47 with a perfect december chill overhead if you like this kind of weather, more details coming up in the forecast we have chances of rain as we get into next week. we'll take a closer look with the full accuweather forecast. >> thank you. a ferocious fire forced 23 people out of their homes in allentown. the blaze sparked along the 2400 block of north fulton street. six homes were destroyed. and the blaze was declared under control at 2:30 this morning. the fire marshal's office remains on the scene investigating the cause of the fire. a would be thief left behind a path of destruction at two car dealerships in philadelphia. annie mccormick has more. >> reporter: it looks like auto

dealerships were the targets but the want to be thieves did not get away with any vehicles they left behind damage. this is the thief casing out the corvettes. and then smashing the window to get inside. >> they believe he is looking for vehicle keys to steal and you see the person motioning to someone outside and later a police k-9 unit arrived. by then they believe the culprits headed down the street to chrysler jeep and ran. that stolen ford fusion was used as a battering ram to break the steel fence and gained access into the showroom and once inside found a minivan with keys in the ignition. they tried to drive through a wall and the van broke down, they left both vehicles behind, police say they made off with a

set of keys but not a vehicle. police believe the suspects may have rear ended this car on chapman's lot to create an opening for the cars they hoped to steal. employees would not talk on camera but that the burglar walked by the pope's holy fiat. >> according to chapman chevrolet, besides this surveillance video that they have, it appears that the suspect left behind a tire iron that may have been used to break the glass here. reporting in southwest philadelphia, annie mccormick, channel 6 "action news." investigators are still searching for the person seen in this surveillance video, part of their investigation into the center city envelope blast. philadelphia police and atf says that video shows the man dropping off the explosive package on pine street last week. two days later, 60-year-old jim alden opened the padded envelope

in his kitchen and it grew up. a reward is offered for anyone that helps to catch the suspect. and new jersey police are looking for the person that shot a woman during an attempted robbery in a lyft vehicle. prosecutors say that the suspect hopped into the back of the car and demanded money and fired off a shot as the lyft driver sped away and amber dudley of collingswood and they are still searching for the shooter. and a former pro wrestling star facing homicide charges that jimmy super fly snucka was incompetent to stand trial for the death of his girlfriend. prosecutors are asking the judge to require snucka to participate nate in outpatient treatment. they call her death an

unfortunate accident. a judge denied a request for a special prosecutor in the criminal complaint against chris christie. william brennan says christie violated the statute by failing reopen the bridge lanes in 2013. more ahead on "action news" including the hostage situation inside of a bank in florida. and from one of the men inside he told how he scared off the suspect and how a college in california plans to help students stressed out over their upcoming finals. stay with us.

sign. the driver did not have an accident in the 10 years since driving. the homeowner says this is the second time this happened in the last five-months. and people are looking at the remains of their homes and businesses as a wild fire tour through homes and businesses in the smokey mountains in gatlinburg, tennessee. it killed 13 people and damaged hundreds of homes and businesses there. one of the hostages free sded from a dramatic bank standoff said he hid. frank brown was one of 13 people inside of the bank when a man came in with a gun and a pit bull. brown says he hid with a bank flee while holding the others by gun point, he got up to run and knocked of chairs and the loud

noise startled the suspect. >> he thought the police were coming in and ran out of the room where everybody was, i don't know how i did it i ran to the doors on my knees and i roll out the door and the police said run! i couldn't run so i rolled again! >> at that moment s.w.a.t. officers swooped in and rescued the hostages, nicholas humphrey was arrested and charged. the college in california has new plans that are stressed out from finals, puppies and coloring books, that is right, american river college is bringing in dogs and starting an adult coloring book program. many students are loving the idea but one student back in school for his masters degree says that students need to cope like everyone else. >> i have a concern about bringing these things on campus, we have a tendency to baby our

the north and west in interior portions of the northeast a weak frontal boundary moving on through, not a lot of precipitation associated with this. this moves through dry across much of the delaware and lehigh valleys. it brings cooler air for the start of the weekend the first weekend in december by the way. the call from accuweather forecast, a cool breeze north-northwest. 10 to 20 miles per hour. temperature coming in at 51. overnight tonight it's mostly clear and less wind, 33 in the suburbs and 38 in philadelphia for the overnight low, the weekend plenty of sunshine saturday and sunday. high pressure is getting closer to our region and highs both days maxing out in the 40s. but there is an area of low pressure a piece of energy to the south and west that moves through late sunday into monday and as it comes on through there could be rain showers overnight sunday into early monday morning for philadelphia. maybe some wet flakes north and west of town.
