"action news" at 12:30 continues. with rick williams sara bloomquist and meteorologist, david murphy. hello again here are the stories we are following for you on "action news" at 12:30. if you are spending time outside today layer up and cover up. we have windchills in the single digits and the threat of snow squalls and high winds and the latest forecast coming up. and syria's president makes a major announcement about the war torn city of aleppo. and how thieves targeting drivers that just want to stay warm on their commute. >> we begin with the weather and

the dangerous cold snap giving us windchills in the single digits and some places may see a burst of snow before it's all over. team coverage of this bitter blast this afternoon. gray hall is live in center city with a look at how folks are coping today. lets begin with david murphy back outside braving the frigid digits as well. >> if i was out here for more than a couple of minutes i'd have the hood up no doubt. take a look at the snow shower that is up north on stormtracker 6 live double scan this is the biggest one we have right now, coming through allentown and pushing towards spring town and scoopersburg and quakertown picking up some of this, this is fast moving but picking up a small accumulation that could freeze up on highways and route 309 would be one of those roads that might be affected. overalthough it's clouds mixing with sunny breaks and every now and then a puff of snow today.

temperatures are brutal, 24 degrees in philadelphia. winds whipping and 14 degrees in buffalo and cold weather flooding into the region and we expect the numbers to dip slightly in the afternoon and the windchill making it feel like 7 degrees in philadelphia and how about those negative windchills up in pittsburgh, buffalo and out in binghamton, new york. because of a strong cold wind in the region, dropping down at 28 miles per hour and gusts up as high as 40 to 44, we have seen some of them that high. we have a nice gust on the terrance currently. as we look at numbers, these are the temperatures over the last 12 hours, they slide down to 22 degrees by 6:00 and by 10:00, 21 and teens quickly after we get past that period. future tracker 6 showing you the temperatures continue to stay pretty cold on friday, although we are going to improve up to 26 in the afternoon and be careful

of the snow showers they can give you a quick slick spot on the roads, here comes the wind and we'll come in happy at the moment and talk about how cold the -- long the cold snap lasts. lets head out to gray hall live at dillworth park in center city with more on how people are dealing with the bitter temperatures. >> reporter: hi sara, some people love it and others hate it. but agree you must dress in layers and the looks are deceiving but trust us it is cold. it's december and bound to happen, bitter cold and biting wind are here. across the area the fashion sense is the same bundle up. >> i have thermals, my sweater, my scarf and my coat and hoody, i bundle up. >> with temperatures notice

teens and 20s it's down right bone chilling. those we talked to say if you have to be out in the elements be prepared for the fight with old man winter with lots of layers. >> i'm cold and my kids are crazy they act like it's not cold but i'm cold. >> thermal, thick gloves and hats and lots of boots and double socks. >> you hate the time of year? >> i don't like it too much. >> being out in the brutal cold is not fun but others said bring it on the colder the better. love it or not the snow is soon to follow. >> hopefully we get two feet. all together. through the whole entire winter toe. >> what advice do you give people from the south first time visiting and dealing with the cold. >> one day at a time. it gets better, we have four

seasons. the cold will not last forever. and our area has a code blue in an effort to get the homeless off the streets and into shelters, find that information on our website at gray hall, channel 6 "action news." >> by the way gray welcome to philadelphia. >> yeah okay you can laugh later. the story is the same across much of the country, 130 people across states are dealing with the cold december air. in parts of the midwest temperatures dropped to 30 degrees below zero, in chicago this weather requires special measures. >> i have gloves on and snow pants on and three pairs of socks. >> snow is blanketing roads and a school bus went down the hill slamming into several cars below right there. fortunately no one was injured.

torn city of aleppo, this morning syria's president says history is made and assad praised forces driving the rebels from the city and they are being evacuated along with civilians after a cease fire was reached. the world health organization is monitoring the progress and only 1,000 people will left. russian officials say that 100,000 have been evacuated since the start of the offensive. a buck county man wanted for armed robbery and drug charges allegedly tried to get away by ramming two police cars during a traffic stop. investigators by bensalem tried to pull over christopher hess and he tried to flee the scene and when he couldn't get away he took off on foot.

hess is held on a half million dollars bail. a driver was seriously injured in this crash in feltonville overnight. this is the scene near fifth street. investigators had to cut the drivers from the wreckage. nobody else was hurt. a delaware military academy student got an early christmas present this morning, a big surprise from senator chris couns. >> my service academy selection committee have chosen you to be my nominee. >> jacob hudson was the number one pick for the united states naval academy and he is guaranteed a spot in the class of 2021, hudson was overwhelmed by the decision that senator couns says was an easy one to make. >> athletic prowess and captain

of the football team and academic leadership and elected student body president and his passion and determination for serving our nation. impressed my service board. >> to receive this from senator couns is an amazing honor. >> hudson serves as the battalion serving officer in the school's rotc. he is active in the delaware youth leadership network. >> quite a young man. a local postal worker got an honor, walking accident free for more than 30 years on the job. daniel is a letter carrier at the fairmount postal center, he got the 100 million step award during the special ceremony and a plaque and special jacket displaying his status as an award winner. >> congratulations to him. >> more ahead.

to change passwords after the discovery of a hack affecting more than a billion accounts. it happened back in 2013 but only recently discovered and yahoo! has yet to identify the source. they blamed a 2014 attack on an unidentified foreign government. in both cases the stolen information included names, social security numbers and security questions along with the answers. federal prosecutors began close arguments in the trial of dillon roof accused of killing

nine people inside of a church last year. the testimony was emotional as a survivor told about hiding under the table to avoid the gun fire. polly shepherd called 911 but he had already shot her friend. >> he has it in his hand he is reloading. >> how many shots has he fired? >> i don't know there are so many. >> he could get the death penalty if convicted. most of us want to spend as little time outdoors as we can. and we may want to start the car before we get in it. >> watch the thieves roll up on an idling vehicle and steal it

moments later, this guy approaches and darts to open it but it's locked and then this guy comes out to stop him but it's too late. cars left running to warm up. and cops call them puffers and for thieves it's a golden opportunity. they advise drivers not to leave their running vehicles running. >> 60 seconds that is all it took to steal gregory's car and they got the keys for the second car. they came back to steal that one too. >> it's illegal to leave the car idling with the keys inside and that could mean in your own driveway depending on the state. more than 50,000 cars stolen in

2015 had the keys inside. >> in lakewood, colorado, we hit the streets in january with sergeant dave hoover, within minutes his discover puffers. >> car is left running unattended while you are inside of a store. this driver hit with a $57 ticket. >> i wanted to sit in a warm car on the way to work and rick's car has just been stolen. >> windows are frosted and maybe four minutes inside, and come back out and the car is gone. singer, dolly parton, says her telethon raised $6 million to help those of the tennessee wild fires. all the donations have yet to be counted but so far up to $9 million, this provides $1,000

every month for six months for families that lost their homes. the wild fire spread to 2500 buildings and killed 14 people. and dogs left homeless, 11 dogs arrived at the sanctuary on tuesday. one the first rescue groups to accept dogs from the area. they will be available after they are spade or neuters and given a clean bill of held blg. >> coming up another check of your forecast looking live outside sky 6 hd showing you spring mountain where they are making snow today getting ready for the skiers that actually like this weather. meteorologist, david murphy, has an update from accuweather.

nasa is now hunting hurricanes, a fleet of micro satellites reached orbit this morning after launching off florida's southeast coast.

the carrier dropped the pegasus rocket at 39,000 feet. and satellites pushed away from the rocket. the mission plans to measure ocean surface and wind speeds at the center of storms that will improve the forecasting of a hurricane's intensity. >> the cold is here and i saw a bit of snow today as well? >> a little snow overnight. over for the most part this morning, a couple of little puffs now. a couple of flurries and snow showers around. that stuff up north in allentown is pushing to the south and falling apart. nothing out there right now, if you go through the rest of the day, if you see a sudden burst of snow slow it down. you could see a freezeup so be careful.

it's a great place in the spring time for tulips and roses and flowers and today left over snow on the ground. 24 is the temperature in philadelphia and do bundle up, the winds run at 28 miles per hour. gusting as high as 40 or so right now across the region and that gives you windchills making it feel like the single digits, future tracker 6 picking up the idea of a snow squall here or there. and that looks few and far between if you get caught in one you slow it down. 23 is the high this afternoon in philadelphia. these are not the official highs for the day and they were all maybe 5 or 6 degrees higher back before dawn. since that cold air is crushed on the strong wind this is what you have got the rest of the way. i expect this to drop to 20 degrees and very cold conditions out there. and the strong winds making it feel worse, windchills will range from 5 and 10 through the center of the region.

10 to 15 that is it not exactly pretty closer to the shore and the farther north you go, you may get windchills below zero as times. 21 degrees by 2:00 and a lot of times we'll tell you we'll get a high at 3:00 not today. the numbers flatten out and single digit windchills along the way. tomorrow still cold, high pressure is in the vicinity and that helps to knock the winds down and late at night and overnight we'll see a warm front come in that will begin to interact with cold air and produce snow for us and after that warm air should change the snow over to rain. by 1:30 in the morning, this is again on saturday morning, friday night into saturday, snow in the northern tier some of this may wrap to south jersey and it's e95 corridor, in the morning we have warm air coming up from the south that changes this over to rain in

philadelphia. sleet line and rain line in a transition from snow to rain. that continues to push farther to the north and we have cold air in place after two days in the 20s and after you see the change over to rain and the car thermometer go up and the surface temperature may be below freezing, i would advise you to be cautious driving up to lunch time on saturday. today's high is sagging after that and windchills about 9 and cold tomorrow and 28 and not as windy and the snow late at night and the snow continues into the early part of saturday morning before changing over to icing and freezing rain and sleet and all over to rain later in the day. and then 60 mild on sunday with more rain possible. but back to the 30s on monday and tuesday. >> okay. thank you david. well, the much anticipated next installment of star wars is set to open and to be a massive
