>> now on "action news" a lehigh valley mother gets lost in the arizona wilderness and explains how she survived two nights in subfreezing temperatures without any food. >> happening today, a historic visit. president obama will join the prime minister of japan at pearl harbor. >> prepare for a one day warmup. morning showers and highs over 60 will make it seem like spring. good morning everyone, 5:30 on this tuesday december 27th. tam and david are off. we have nydia han karen rogers and matt pelman. >> good morning. since it's spring we'll see a few spring showers but right now we're starting with very mild temperatures. it's still dry in philadelphia and it's 56 degrees already. also 56 in dover. even in the lehigh valley
sitting at 50 degrees in south jersey, 54 in millville, 58 degrees already in atlantic city. temperatures going to shoot up well above average. let's take a look right now at storm tracker6 live double scan because we're starting to see some of those showers pop up. you can kind of get a sense of that right here just west of the city right now and west of wilmington so we're watching for those early showers building in. it's not going to be terribly heavy but the first half of the day is going to be wet at times. here is a wider look at satellite6 and action radar. lots of clouds. the bulk of the rain hasn't hit us just yet but we're going get showers on and off through the early part of the dane lots of clouds. temperatures are going the shoot up early and then kind of slowly fall in the afternoon. the 7:00 a.m. 56, by 10:00 a.m., 61. still a couple of showers around. by 1 o'clock you're dry but it's still 59 degrees. enjoy it. a bit of sunshine, a bit more sunshine at 4:00. it's dropping to 55 degrees at 7 o'clock tonight it's still above the average high and 46 but temperatures really change tomorrow.
details on that coming up in just a few minutes, matt. >> but for now i can get on board with this whole spring thing. i like it. we're supporting our traffic this morning. we like the conditions we've got so far. it's mostly dry a little bit damp at worst karen and here on the vine street expressway everything remained opened overnight as the construction crews remain on their holiday break. they will return tonight at 11 o'clock and close down the vine but right now it's good to go for you. on the big picture no complaints on the blue route 476 or the schuylkill expressway. they did not work yesterday on that water main break in queen village so still just one lane opened on southbound columbus boulevard. i would not be surprised if the crews return to work on it later today and close it down entirely. but right now one lane is opened. on 95 a lot of speeds in the 50's and there is still a broken down vehicle actually no, there isn't, it just cleared within the last minute northbound between academy and woodhaven. dv cleared out of the way. douglas township still have that serious accident on the ramp from route 73 philadelphia avenue to 100 northbound there by patriot
buick gmc. emergency crews are on the scene and a lane is belonged also a serious crash involving a vehicle that ran into a parked vehicle in chester along second street which is 291 between wilson and mill streets. emergency crews are out there, too. no issues on the commodore barry and don't forget septa buses and trolleys remain on a modified weekday schedule all week. matt. >> thank you, matt a lehigh valley mother system speaking out from her hospital bed in utah about an amazing story of survival. she risked her life to save her family when they became stranded near the grand canyon. "action news" reporter katherine scott has the dramatic details live in our satellite center. katherine. >> reporter: matt this started thursday afternoon for this family. their car was stuck, it was freezing cold. they had no cell phone service so this mother decided to hike to the nearest road to try to find help not realizing that that road was closed for the winter. she wasn't found until early saturday morning. she's now being treated for severe frost bite.
>> i just kept moving forward thinking if i don't get there then i can't -- i'm not going survive another night. lucky to be alive karen klein from palmer township is recovering in utah her husband eric by her side. the associate professor at northampton community college hiked for 26 miles for more than 30 hours in the snowy wilderness near the grand canyon to try to save her stranded family. >> my son needs his mother. mmy husband needs his wife. >> reporter: karen eric and their den-year-old son decided to stop at the grand canyon while on vacation. they explained when a main road was closed their gps led them on back roads. when snow and ice made driving impossible they tried to turn around and their car went into a ditch. karen an experienced wilderness guide decided to hike to the nearest highway for help. >> by 6 o'clock we knew something was wrong because it wasn't like karen to be away. >> reporter: by friday afternoon, karen still hadn't
returned. eric walked 7 miles until he found cell phone service and called 911. but the search continued for karen. >> i know that she's somewhere and she's doing fine. i don't know how but i know it. so i'm going walk and we're going to call and my son will handle being in the car by himself and we're going to find her and it's going to be okay and that's -- hit repeat and say it over and over and over. >> reporter: karen had food and water when she started but eventually ate twigs and drank urine to survive. gone for 36 hours, rescue crews found her in a park ranger cabin near the entrance to grand canyon national park. >> i kept thinking this isn't -- this isn't how my life is supposed to end. >> reporter: eric and their 10-year-old son were treated and released from the hospital for exposure. the entire family can't wait to get back to the lehigh valley. we are live in the satellite center katherin katherine scott channel6 "action news. >> holiday shopping found in
chaos and panic inside a north jersey mall. someone yelled shooter and pandemonium ensued but it turns out the sound was actually a chair getting slammed to the floor. a fight broke out in the food court of the mills at jersey gardens in elizabeth. videos posted on social media show a stampede-like scenario play out. >> it was like 13 of us in the bathroom plus a baby and every five seconds we just heard running and then boom, boom, boom. >> this was just one of several mall melees across the country. we'll have much more on the violence coming up in our next half hour. an 18-year-old is now in custody for a deadly hit-and-run on christmas eve. delaware state police say bradford pollock struck and killed 54-year-old lisa bolden. slaw crossing christiana road just east of edinburgh drive in new castle on saturday night. a tip called led police to the alleged striking vehicle with

bailey road right by the dominos pizza. what we don't see is a whole lot of traffic out here on business 30. it's pretty quiet at the moment in thorndale. just watch out for some wet conditions now as those showers moved through. watching out for a crash in douglas township on the ramp from route 73, that's philadelphia avenue, to go north on 100 there by pate i don't know buick gmc. emergency crews remain on the scene. in tullytown bucks county getting reports of a new crash. if you're headed to the dunkin' donuts or the trenton line train station this morning it's along levittown parkway by the intersection with route 13. also have a crash in chester delaware county. this is along 291 that's second street near wilson street. reportedly a vehicle struck a parked car there. so emergency crews are on the scene trying to clean that mess up. and construction crews return elsewhere in delco today. wallingford avenue closing beginning today for the next few weeks from 9:00 until 3:00 as they install a new water main. woodward and possum hollow roads your alternates around
that. time for the commuter report brought to you by the waze app. port richmond getting reports of a minor crash along 95 southbound between allegheny and girard. if we see anything in the cameras of course we'll let you see it, too. nydia. >> matt thank you. we have new information about last month's deadly plane crash that killed members of a brazilian soccer team. aviation authorities in colombia concluded the charter plane should have never taken off with the flight plan that was submitted. control tower recordings reveal the pilot and co-pilot knew the plane did not have enough fuel for the trip but did not report the emergency in time. however, officials said there was no evidence of sabotage. 71 people were killed late last month. there were six survivors. five of the six inmates who escaped a tennessee jail through this bathroom wall are back behind bars. the group broke out sunday morning by removing a toilet from the wall then kicking out a section of damaged concrete. the sheriff is blaming the escape on bolts that became rusted from constant plumbing
issues. the cher sieve says he's been complaining to the state about problems with the jail building which is a converted hospital. >> an ohio woman who was pulled over for driving erratically gave her child a sippy cup filled with wine to hold during the traffic stop. it happened in the cincinnati suburb of loveland on friday. police say they received a call about a vehicle crossing the double yellow line and hitting a curb. they eventually stopped 27-year-old elizabeth floyd. >> the car behind me is all over the road. they just missed two head-on collisions. >> floyd admitted to police that she handed her five-year-old son a sippy cup of wine when officers approached her car. she's charged with driving under the influence and child endangering. a a north carolina family is grateful a stranger stepped in just in time to save their dog. debbie hilton's suv caught fire while she and her family were inside a restaurant in ashville yesterday morning. their dog abbey was trapped inside the burning vehicle.

the store window on madison avenue. a manager believes the criminals cased out the store the day before because they knew exactly where to find the priciest pieces. >> a driver discovered his pup pickup had a little extra purchase a kitten had been trapped under the hood. he thinks the animal had been there for his entire trip across four states. plus he's certain that this is the same kitten he had seen near his home in fort drum, new york, 600 miles away. the driver took the cat to an emergency v hit no serious injuries. so one of his relatives decided to adopt the kitten. >> ♪
