officer shot and killed a man because the man pulled out a gun. the deadly encounter is under investigation as the police commissioner reveals the man took a shot to the back. katherine scott is live at police headquarters with the full story. >> reporter: matt they are trying to figure out exactly what happened and police are looking for surveillance cameras and witnesses. they are trying to figure out more about what happened. let's go to the scene from hunting park last evening. you can see there's a gun in the street there lying feet away from the dirt bike that the man was riding. thmed -- this happened around 6:45 p.m. the uniform officer was transporting witnesses to special victims unit when he spot add biker driving erratically. he stopped to tell the biker to drive safely. as the officer approached the

bike, the man walked away. the officer grabbed the waistband and he felt a gun. he grabbed his service weapon and told him not to pull out the gun, the man pulled away from the officer and got the gun out anyway. police say video shows one of the shots was fired as the man was running from the officer. but police commissioner called it a violentent coroner and has concerns about it. family and friends showed up at the scene they were stunned. >> he didn't bother nobody. >> reporter: this was your grandson? >> the male had to break away from the officer and pulled it out, the officer discharged immediately. part of the video shows the male was running away when he was shot. >> reporter: the officer will be taken off the street as the investigation continues. live at police headquarters,
