[ laughter ] i saw that trump is also scheduled to visit tek uk in two which means he's got 14 days to learn how to speak english. [ laughter ] [ cheers and alause ] but trump has already been doing some traveling. he did a rally in north dakota . last nig and at one point, he brought congressman kevin cramer up to the stage.ey ave each other a hug, kind of -- it was a little awkward. watch this. >> welcome to north dakota! >> jimmy: the big story is still the supreme court. i read that before announcing his retirement, justice anthony kennedy met with trump o half an hour. actually, he wasn't planning to retire but after 30 minutes with trump, he was like, "i've got to get out of this town. [ laughter ] i've had enough. i'm gonna retire. i'm good." [ applause ] did you see this? while trump was talking to reporters about anthony kennedy for a cond it seemed like he forgot kennedy's last name. take a look at this. a >> a mano have great respect for, justice anthony -- you know who i'm talking about -- justice kennedy will be retiring. mitch mcconnell, wantshe senate to vote on trump's supreme court pick, even though he refused to hold a vote on ne obama's no when they heard that, democrats were like, "mitch, please." dylaughter and applause ] but now that kens retiring, there's lots of talk about who his replacement will be, and some people are rried that trump will pick a judge who isn't qualified. well we wanted to talk to one of trump's pential nominees for the role. so please welcome judge fran watts. [ chee and applause ] >> hi, jimmy. as you can see, i am a judge. >> jimmy: yeah, well. we're very happy to have you here, judge watt. now pele are obviously very curious about how you would address some serious issues. so i would like to ask you a a few questions if you don't mind. >> i've never wanted to do anything more in my life. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: okay. first question. do you believe that the constitution is a living document, and if so, how should a judge determine what new rights to create and what laws passed by the people must be cast aside? >> i actually stopped listening after you said living document, because -- [ laughter ] i was so disgusted by the idea
of like a little piece of paper with arms and legs. [ laughter ] it's so perverse, just crawling around like a little ferret. you know? >> jimmy: no, that's not what i -- [ laughter ] that's not what -- all right, next question. >> okay. >> jimmy: do you believe that judges should rely on international law to interpret the u.s. constitution? l i don't -- i'm not familiar with internation, but i am familiar with maritime law. [ laughter ] >> right? >> jimmy: i was so late to the party on that. >> really? >> jimmy: i was. but i was like -- >> no, becau>> it's so good. immy: i was reading it two years after everyone else read it. i'm like, "have you guys heard of --" and like, yeah >> yeah. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: where have you been for two year >> so good >> jimmy: phenomenal. >> phenomenal. so, yeah, so i met with them and they sort of offered me ale a producorial hich has been amazing, because i get to use my mom voice. >> jimmy: as a producer? [ laughter ] >> as a producer.
>> jimmy: like, how would you do it? >> yeah, i kind of feel like me as a producer and me as a mom are very similar. >> like, i'm very compassionate but very firm. you know? >> jimmy: oh, interesting. >> yeah. >> jimmy: like, how would you tell somebody, like,sohey're dointhing they shouldn't be doing. >> that is a really good effort. i think maybe we should put our energy elsewhere. [ laughter and applause ] you compliment them first. >> jimmy: that was perfect. - you've got to lead with you got to lead with the validation. but i use my mom voice in weird plac, like, on the red carpe i used my mom voice recently. >> jimmy: you [ laughter ] >> one of the photographers likes to swear. i don't know why she's so angry. but she's ke f'ing this and f'ing that. and i'm like, "we do not swear on the red carpet." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: "we don't do that he. we --" >> and it's always the "we," you know? >> jimmy: yeah, "we don't do that in our house." >> we don't -- on this red carpet, we don't swear. >> jimmy: we don't sweth. we don't d. [ laughter ] >> and then i'm like, "oh, my gosh, i'm so nerdy." i love it. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: do you do that with your daughter, as well? >> i do. you know what's funny with my ug er is i use that sort of like -- the pronouns are interesting. so i don't know if i got used to referring to myself as mommy to her.
but a couple weeks ago -- she's eight. i was taing to her and i was asking for forgiveness because i had lost my patience. >> jimmy: yeah. >> and i was like, "mommy is sorry. mommy didn't get a loteep last night. mommy --" and she goes, "why e you preferring to yourself in the third person?" [ laughter ] immy: yeah, she's like, yeah. >> she's eight i was so proud of her. >> jimmy: how smart is tt? i was like, "oh, you know third person!" >> jimmy: -- >> i know. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: who knows third person at 8 years old? >> b like, "why am i referring to myself --" [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah. >> "in the third person?" >> jimmy: in this -- >> "because amy is tired." [ laughter ] you're like, "i have no idea but, jimmy, i -- look. we got to get this milk out to the dairy. but, you know, we've seen trump say, "they're the enemy of the people." you know, "they're fake news." and so, these are the pillars of democracy that are -- have to hold us up. and right now, they're being challenged. and that's why i did "shock and awe." because it's all about holding the admini there are about four journalists -- >> jimmy: yeah. wa from knight ridder news in the run-up to thin iraq. and they basically got it all right. but they were buried. .cause nobody believed th because they were buying the company line, which was the bush administration. >> j and -- because saddam hussein had weapons of mass destruction. >> yeah. supposedly, he had weapons of mass destruction, supposedly had something to do with 9/11. all these things were lies. and administrations use propaganda to sell, you know, a a policy or a rationale to go for war. but it's always up to the journalists to keep them honest. anthat's their job. there's a clip in the film. and i think one of the lines i have in there is -- i don't
know if you're goingow it or not. but i talk about how when the government says something there's only one question you have to ask. it true? and that is what the journalists have to do. but now it more difficult than ever to get to the truth and inform the public. because unless the public is informed, we don't have a a chance to hold this democracy together. so we're trying, we're fighting. ovd, you know, hopefully we will, because wethis country. and we don't want to see it dissolve.
