deaths of two virginia college students -- owns up to the murders. we now know the names of two people killed - when police say an arsonist set fire to a marina. nine million dollars. that is the amount a family wants from a norfolk police officer -- for shooting and killing their son. welcome to newschannel three at 5 - i )m les smith. and i m barbara ciara. our nadeen yanes has been following the case since the night david latham was killed by officer michael edington nearly two years ago. today she spoke exclusively to the man representing the family )s demands. she has that story - new at 5 . it )s a 9 million dollar civil slap -- against michael edington. dollar civil slap -- against michael edington. the norfolk police officer charged with shooting and killing 35 year old david latham -- back on june 6 2014. the night -- 376889 oh my god this mother watched her son die.

376889 3:25 all i heard was boom boom boom butted 8:16 they shot him like a dog audrey latham told us back then she called police for help --hoping they could take david - who was mentally ill -- to the hospital. police say when they got to the norfolk home though -- latham was holding a knife and threatening officers. forcing edington to shoot. but one year later -- edington was indicted in david s death charged with manslaughter. and tonight -- while he waits for criminal trial to begin. he gets slapped with this lawsuit -- which in part says edington s "excessive and unreasonable use of deadly force was ... the result of errors and recklessness" the latham family attorney -- john cooper sat down th only newschannel 3 to plain. tragedy for the latham family but it was a tragedy for edington as well. it was never his desire to fire that gun, he only made that decision because he believed his life and the life of others was being threatened. two people who were killed in a massive fire at a middlesex county marina. newschannel three s gabriella deluca has been following this story all week. she brings us the new details. police say 75- year-old frank blantz and 65 year old julia blantz were on the boat when it went up in flames monday morning. the couple died in the fire -- and almost two dozen boats were destroyed. news of the fire -- and the blantzs deaths -- shook the small town. 33:16 it was very shocking and very sad. first of all that the fire was so immense that it destroyed so many boats then to find out two people were killed it was just heartbreaking. friends of the couple say the blantzs were living on their boat. 57;09 they loved their boat they loved being here. they were very experienced boaters. state police tell newschannel 3 -- someone intentionally started the fire. ... something that locals have a tough time comprehending. 34;49 i can t believe it. i can t believe it. i would like to think it was an accident. i really would hate to think somebody did this in

virginia tech student -- disappeared in 2009 after attending a metallica concert in charlottesville. months later on a nearby farm -- but her killer remained a mystery. then in 2014 -- uva student hannah graham went missing. her remains were found a month later on an abandoned property. case -- and dna linked him to harrington. prosecutors had said they would seek the death penalty if so he no longer faces that possibility. but as part of the deal -- he gave up his right to appeal and will not be eligible for geriatric release. newport news police need your help. they )re looking for the person who robbed a dollar general. it happened last monday on warwick boulevard. police say the man you see here entered the store -- pulled out a gun -- and demanded cash. once he got the money-- he walked out of the store. two employees and two customers were in the store at the time. no one was hurt. take another good look at this man -- if you know anything that might help police find him--
