good morning and welcome to 10 news good thursday morning. 5:59. live from the weather center i'm tracking a few showers offshore. nothing that will hamper your morning commute yet. we'll be mainly dry the next couple hours. temperatures are on the warm side. upper 60s to near 70. we are on our way to the mid 70s today. there it is. there are the showers and a few thunderstorms. they'll roll in here later today. i'll have a check on your bridges coming up.
welcome to 10 news this morning. i'm allison kropff. >> i'm ian reitz. thank you very much for joining us. hillsborough county has a health energy thanks to the zica virus. >> 10 news reporter emerald morrow is live at the florida department of health in tampa. what does this mean for us exactly? >> reporter: now that the governor has signed that public health emergency here in hillsborough county it mines that the state can take serious action to do whatever it needs to do to fight this dangerous zica virus. one of the big things you'll see happening is workers will be out and about spraying heavily for mosquitoes. the county has a $2 million budget for mosquitoes and says it will add more money do that budget if necessary. florida department of health will have more power to decide what it needs to do to protect you and keep the virus from spreading.
to keep you safe, they stay most of the power is in your hands. >> the best way to battle this is sound off much like with the national security issues. if you see something that is not right, like a large infestation of mosquitoes call the county and we'll send a crew out to treat the area. >> reporter: hospital workers are asking all pregnant woman who come in the they have been to countries where the zica virus has been spreading. if you get the zica virus how long does it stay in your system? i'll have the answer for you coming up at 6:30. reporting live in tampa emerald morrow 10 news wtsp. if you are looking to file your taxes online, you may have to wait a couple of days. irs says they are having problems with their computer systems. some of systems will be out of service through today. taxpayers can send electric
national weather service will be in north carolina to see if it was a tornado or straight line winds that caused all of this damage. in thomasville severe stormed rolled through. roofs have been ripped off and debris is scattered everywhere. >> my mom told me she thought a tornado rolled through. the house and garage and buildings are gone. parts of the midwest are digging out from more than a foot of snow. in south dakota snow plows are moving as fast as they can while people are using snow blowers to make walkways around their home. the problem now is what to do with all of that snow once it is piled up. >> it is going to be difficult. a lot of people have smaller lots. a lot gets hauled. >> some people say this is the most snow they have seen in one
if you and your kids have ever ridden a carnival right pay attention to this story. in a few hours the state fair opens in tampa. one teenager claims she was thrown from a ride last year. >> reporter: these tips come from a carnival expert. jonathan brooks has been working in this try for years. every time he puts his kids on a ride like that. he told me every time your kid goes on a ride you should look for a green sticker. department of agriculture puts the stickers on rides that pass inspection. if they don't pass the inspection they don't get a green sticker. you need to follow the height rules. it is very important for kids. if they don't meet the height restriction they could be in danger. lastly, you always want to ask to speak to an inspector.

family and friends will come together today to say good- bye to 13-year-old nicole lovell. she disappeared last week from her virginia home. her body was found days later. preliminary autopsy reports lovell was stabbed to death the day she disappeared. two virginia tech students are in jail for her death 10 investigates showed cities that held elections in the fall draw many more voters. additionally, they are free instead of the hundreds of thousands of dollars some cities pay to hole -- held separate elections. the bill may have the support it needs in the senate. critics argued the bill would take away city's rights to chose when to hole their owner election. in a few hours hillary clinton and bernie sanders are

let's go live to our sky 10 network camera on i-275 in hillsborough county. this is at busch boulevard. you are looking at the ramp from busch boulevard getting on the highway. no issues for you. drive time on the apex to i-4 is 15 minutes. rest of your majors looking good, as well. veterans expressway 53 miles per hour. coming across the howard frankland bridge into tampa you are still at 55 miles per hour. no delay there just yet passing west shore and dale mabry highway. i-75 going south looking good at 65 miles per hour. i am still on top of an accident that happened about an hour ago on 78th street south at eagle palm drive. someone ran into a utility pole. no injuries are reported. since it ran into a utility pole teco has to go to the scene to make sure everything is okay. you'll see them there as well as police on the scene. polk county you are looking good.

inspector at the florida state fair. >>i'm not going to let my kids ride in them and i'm not going to let your kids ride in them. >> the fair is opening up in tampa this morning. there is growing safety about the rides you and your kids love. >> we are live at the fairgrounds this morning. a local attorney is raising concerns after a teen was thrown from a ride. the thing putting you most at danger has nothing to do with the ride itself. >> reporter: two things. your cell phone and a go pro. these are the worse enemies in a carnival ride. the reason? they can fall off at any time, hit somebody and cause more damage. listen in. >> it will be fine. don't worry about it. >> reporter: this video posted on youtube shows a teen wearing a go pro. gets into a ride.
while riding next to a bunch of kids. the video you heard the inspector tell him i hope this thing fits in the ride. then he asked him to keep it a secret between them. inspectors tell me this is extremely dangerous. imagine your phone or camera flying out of your hands and hitting somebody. >> the cell phone comes out or the go pro comes out of your pants it could hit somebody or a patron on the ground. we don't want that. nothing is taken lightly here. we do our due diligence to make sure everybody comes out and is safe. >> reporter: that's why these inspections are so crucial. today the state inspector and independant inspectors will look over every ride and look at every inch of the ride. heave your go pros like this at home. they are too dangerous to be bringing on the rides. state fair here opens at 10:00 a.m. this morning. today's fair opening is a
mother and father who lost their child. >> it is a difficult time for the couple. they are just filing a lawsuit against the fair. the sheriff's office and the district. it has been two years since their 14-year-old son was thrown out along with hundreds of other kids as a stampede went through the midway. the district was giving out free tickets for not foreseeing the danger with so many kids there and the fair for not having enough surveillance and security and supervision to protect the students. >> this is compensation of a lost child, a lost life and a very valued member of the family who is no longer here. >> sense andrew's death there are been changes. the midway is wider to handle huge crowds. there is a command center set up to monitor safety.
detectors and more cameras. there is a public safety risk in hillsborough county that should concern all of us. we are talk about the zica virus. nine people in the state have gotten sick friday. that includes two in hillsborough county. 10 news reporter emerald morrow is joining us live at the department of health in pinellas county. for those with the virus, how long does it stay in your system? >> reporter: the virus stays in your body a week after you get it. that's long enough to develop flu-like symptoms. many people who contract the virus do not even realize that they have it. health officials say they are not worried about the virus spreading person-to-person the way that the flu does. they are worried about it being spread through sexual contact like it did for one person in dallas. however, the real concern is for pregnant women. their children can come out with a birth defect that can leave them with smaller than average heads and underdeveloped brains. unfortunately, at this time
the best defense is to not go to country where is the zica virus is spreading. wear insect repellant with deet and call the county if you have an area that needs spraying. governor scott will be here at the health department later on today to talk about what the state is going to be doing to prevent this virus from spreading. we'll make sure we are here and we'll keep you updated on what he says. live in tampa emerald morrow 10 news wtsp. this morning we have a warning about all these beads you may have collected at gasparilla. a lot of folks did this over the weekend. toxicologists say the beads can contain dangerous level of toxic medals and other chemicals. those can end up in your boy. the real risk is to children because they are touching beads and often times and putting them in their mouth. the real risk is being exposed
>> we are not supposed to be exposed to them. we are not routinely exposed to them. if you look at the life span the problem is fairly low. >> his advice don't put the beads in your mouth. wash your hands and throw them away once you get home. today is facebook's 12th birthday which is dubbed as friend's day. as more users use the site ever day, mark zuckerburg says by 2030 five billion of the world's seven billion people will be on facebook. in honor of the big birthday the social networking site is giving back to you with friendship pictures.
cheers! we are three days away from superbowl 50. >> the broncos and panthers by a practicing for the big game. another team is also getting ready for the biggest game of the year. cbs's jamie eucis is live at the game. >> reporter: even working in tv i had no idea what it takes to produce a superbowl. the lights, the graphics, the cameras, all the technology. it is a lot of hard work to pull it all off. testing graphics is just a small part of what the cbs sports production crew does to get ready for the superbowl. >> i think when you walk in this room what is so impressive is all the monitors. >> reporter: cbs sports executive vice president has worked on close to 20
>> we have all the bells and whistles known to man kind in sports broadcasting. >> reporter: there will be 70 cameras capturing the sights and sounds, including more than 30 that will be mounted around the stadium for a 360 view. that's on top of a camera mounted to a plane. and another on a tower at great america amusement park. >> this is super high-tech. sometimes you have to use a marker. >> right. >> reporter: there will be 16 of these cameras that will mark each corner of the end zone. 13 production trailer on sight were brought in a month ago. while the set is still getting its finishing touches. this is where all the hosts will be sitting on superbowl sunday. they have to embrace the technology. >> this technology helps give them information that he can analyze and make an interesting visual. >> reporter: rebeyond what they
commentators have to connect with fans on social media. >> it is overwhelming. >> reporter: all to make sure there is super coverage for the tens of millions of fans tuning into superbowl 50. something else i learned is that the production team starts planning once the host city is announced. that can be several years before the superbowl even happens. >> talk about all the planning that goes into the big game. years and years of work. thank you very much. yesterday i went to st. patrick's catholic school in largo. it was career day. i talked to the third and fifth graders there about what we do every day here at 10 news. they had some fantastic questions. definitely some future journalists in that school. they get to celebrate things every day. for career day many different people from all careers come in and talk to them. it is great to talk to them about what we do every day and

people in part of north carolina waking up this morning to lots of damage after severe thomasville. national weather service is going to be out there this morning to see if it was a tornado or straight line winds that caused roofs to be ripped off and debris to scatter across lawns. it is a death that rocked a college town in a major university. >> many are expected to gather today to say good-bye to 13- year-old nicole lovell. autopsy reports show the teen was stabbed to death. she disappeared from her home last week in virginia and her body was found days later. her family believes she met her accused killer david eisenhauer through social media. hillary clinton and bernie sanders set to face off in the fifth democratic debate tonight. it will be held in new hampshire. >> the debate comes a week
sanders has a big lead on clinton. on wednesday canidates traded jabs on their progressive value during a town hall event. this is a car on top of someone's roof in california. police say that the driver had some type of medical issue. lost control of the car and drove on to the roof of the house and the people were inside at the time. the house is below the street. that's how this happened. no one was hurt. people inside were fine. crews had to use a crane to get the car off the roof. neighbors say this isn't the first time a car landed on the house. take a look at this guy. this is video of the only known wild jaguar in the u.s. he was seen in arizona's mountains outside of tucson. organization center of biological diversity caught him on motion sensitive cameras. they say jaguars disappeared from the southwest over the past 150 years.
were able to catch this on video. now they'll be able to study it. that's cool. let's get over to hilary zalla. >> we have a big traffic alert on i-4 west near 50th street. there is an accident. your drive time is 20 minutes between i-75 and i-275. let's go live to our sky 10 network camera. you can see the drive time is up to 24 minutes. i'm told at least four cars are involved in this crash. there are a couple in the right shoulder. then one in the left shoulder. this is causing heavy delays. it was blocking the center lane. they were able to pull vehicles into the shoulders. you can see all of the cars and all of the police presence here. you are going to have onlooker delays. this is a really heavy spot for your morning commute. leave early if you can. let's go back to our maps. there is an accident in manatee
this is in bradenton. there is a lane blocked on cortez road going west. we are seeing a delay there. pinellas county, if you are heading along east lake road between the pinellas pasco county line down to tampa road it is getting a little slow. the not horrible yet. your drive time 14 minutes. speeds 36 miles per hour. south of there in pinellas park i'm on top of a crash at 34th street north and 54th avenue north. this has been here for the past two hours. it looks like it is still blocking a lane. there are delays on 34th as well as 54. leave early if you can there. it is not a horrible delay. definitely worse than you normally see. polk county and lakeland you are doing fine. no accidents. if you are heading into tampa for work your drive time is 17 minutes from poke parkway to i- 75. bobby? >> thank you very much. i'm tracking showers offshore so far this morning. nothing on land. a sprinkle can't be ruled out.
and sarasota county have fallen apart. a sprinkle between now and 11:00 this morning can't are ruled out. this line here will creep ever closer as we get through late morning hour. the bulk will come through in the afternoon and evening hours. it is a warm and dry commute. 70 in tampa. 69 sarasota. carrollwood 69. 70 in brooksville. it is the 4th of february. good. college in lakeland with great visibility. fog will not be an issue for you this morning. let's plan your thursday with the forecast model. we'll run you hour-by-hour. and show you only an isolated shower between now and 11:00 this morning. there is not going to be too much. after lunchtime, if you live in hernando county and citrus county that's when you'll start
they'll push southward. the showers will. and a few thunderstorms through 2:00. tarpon springs, pinellas county beaches about 2:30 the rain will get started. there will be embedded thunderstorms. that will move through tampa into sarasota 2:00 to 5:00 this evening. i'll be on the noon show to show you the progression of these storms. i don't think we'll see a lot of severe weather from this. i think we'll have a few thunderstorms. when rally once we get past 5:00 to 6:00 the front comes through. the winds turn around to the north and west. it gets chilly and breezy, too. this is just saying there is a chance for thunderstorms today. not severe weather. we track these very closely regardless. stay weather aware and stay tuned to us here and online. we'll go to 76 today before the rain gets here. then fall quickly back down to the 60s into the 50s. tomorrow morning upper 40s for many areas.
